"Sith" remained a strong player in Japan in its fourth weekend with $3.4 million at 616 playdates, declining only 14% despite appearing in 131 fewer locations. Japanese cume has hit nearly $52 million, lifting the foreign total to $431.6 million and the worldwide cume to $808 million.

\:D/ =D> :woo:

PTA stronger than last week. I'd hope that earthquake had nothing to do with it...but prolly wrong thinking.

The Obon holidays are two weekends away. AOTC made $11m during those 7 days (52 to 63). ROTS should be at about 65M before that weekend. By the end of that week it will be close to $80M. AOTC made 16M from that point. ROTS should get to 20+.

I say $100m is a very good possibilty with 110-115m total more likely.

War of the Worlds is a beast. Lovin' it.

Mr and Mrs Smith still has some failry big markets to go, apparently. So it will beat Batman Begins for foriegn cume, easily.

Well done to Fantastic Four.

Big weekend for Warner, as Charlie, Island spread wider

Jeremy Kay in Los Angeles 05 August 2005

Warner Bros Pictures International will be vying to hold on to the box office crown this weekend as Charlie And The Chocolate Factory opens in Taiwan on Aug 6 alongside an anticipated string of impressive holds.

The family picture amassed just over $20m last weekend powered by a massive UK launch and stands on a $37.3m international running total to date.

Sci-fi thriller The Island has been producing steady business and Warner Bros executives were hoping for more of the same ahead of its Aug 4 debut in Germany, followed a day later by Spain and Brazil.

The Island has grossed $24m to date, while the superhero action adventure Batman Begins stands at $156.2m.

Charlie and The Island can expect strong competition from DreamWorks International's animated hit Madagascar, which currently stands at more than $213.8m through UIP and should hold well in all its markets.

Meanwhile Paramount's War Of The Worlds should continue to do solid business through UIP; it has grossed $316.7m at the international box office and more than $530m worldwide.

Also likely to figure prominently this weekend is Buena Vista International's (BVI) family title Herbie: Fully Loaded, which launches in three major markets.

The picture was set to open in France on Aug 3 and Germany a day later, followed by the UK on Aug 5. It has taken $20.4m to date.

BVI will open Dark Water in Mexico on Aug 5. The picture is in the early stages of its run and has grossed $2.5m.

Sony Pictures Releasing International's (SPRI) military action adventure Stealth will open in the UK on Aug 5 on 380 prints and has amassed $7.5m to date.

The Adventures of Sharkboy And Lavagirl in 3D opens in Russia on Aug 4 on 274 prints and has grossed $5.3m so far.

The Longest Yard had amassed $14m as of Aug 3, while Bewitched had taken $6.7m from its only market of Australia thus far. The comedy expands worldwide beginning Aug 10.

Universal's Southern Gothic thriller Skeleton Key opens through UIP in France on Aug 3 and Sweden on Aug 5; it had taken $2.5m as of Jul 31. Land Of The Dead opens in Russia on Aug 4.

Paramount's Bad News Bears opens in Mexico on Aug 5, and Coach Carter launches in Japan on Aug 6.

Fox International opens Guess Who in France on 130 prints on Aug 3. The international cumulative total is $22.8m.

Star Wars: Episode III has amassed $435m to date, and Fantastic Four has taken $107.6m through Fox and $112m through all distributors.

SEVEN SWORDS

Image

Tsui Hark's martial arts flick opened in the 3 Chinese markets last weekend and garnered mixed results. It was dismantled in Hong Kong by The Island and obliterated in Taiwan by Stealth (it was also outopened by the Japanese import Metantei Conan 2005).

China however delivered a stunning opening, the largest of the year beating such flicks as ROTS and the Hong Kong smash Initial D.

CHINA - Opening Weekend

1) Kung Fu Hustle - $7,766,623 (Y64.3m or $6,524,497 3-Day - 492)
2) House Of Flying Daggers - $6.6m (Y63.9m 3-Day - 360)

Lord Of The Rings: ROTK - $3,381,689 (or $4,588,361 6-Days week - 350)
A World Without Thieves - ~$3.2m
Seven Swords - $3.15m (RMB25.5m - 500)
Star Wars 3: ROTS - $3m (317)
Initial D - $2.9m (RMB24m - 450)
Spiderman 2 - $2,848,442 (Y15.9m/ 20.4m units or $1,504,978 without p/v - 254)
Pearl Harbor - $2.4m (18.6m units 3-Days or $3.9m 6-Days - 272)
Mr. And Mrs. Smith - $2.2m (450)
The Matrix: Revolutions - $1.831m (100p)
The Day After Tomorrow - $1.74m (or $1.8m by Mon - 220)
Troy - $1.7m (170)
Harry Potter 3: POA - $1.6m (Yuan 13m - 170)
Hero - $1.45m
Titanic - $1.4m (177)
The Matrix: Reloaded - $1.4m (or $1.35m without p/v)
Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines - $1.25m

SYMPATHY FOR LADY VENGEANCE

Image

The final installment of Park Chan-wook's "revenge trilogy" dominated the Korean market with one of the largest openings of All-Time. It more than doubled Old Boy's (2003) opening and probably annihilated Sympathy For Mr Vengeance's (2002) opening.

Variety reports a 1.46m adms. total earlier in the week and claimed that it was the largest of all-time beating Taegukgi...actuals tell a different story. In terms of opening admissions:

* 2nd highest for 2005 - behind WOTW
* Highest for a Local in 2005 - beating Public Enemy 2 and Blood Rain

However in US$, it would be a strong contender for the #1 spot. WOTW currently holds that title with US$8.65m followed by Taegukgi with around $6.5m. Depending on how much each admission is worth, it's US$ total could be anywhere between $8-9m. Full confirmation latter in the week.

Taegukgi - 1,777,500 adms. (4-Day or 299,900 adms. 2-Day Seoul) - 400
The Matrix: Reloaded - 1,770,000 adms. (315,000 adms. 2-Day Seoul)

Charlie almost matched its opening weekend during mid-week, grossing an additional $12m to rank amongst the Top 10 largest Opening Weeks in history.

Could this be a typo?, i'm not sure but if it's true, Charlie could turn into a monster. It has now leapfrogged WOTW and Meet the Fockers and sits right behind TTT, that's right TTT. Gosh, Narnia are you paying attention.

Just saw The Island last night and it was a full house for the second weekend. What a great film. Dreamworks totally dropped the ball on this one - they had gold and couldnt market it. Hopefully International should make up for the US gross.

Actually...

Out of the 56 movies released in '05 (that I've seen), I've only given 7 of 'em an A to A+, which is approx. 13%.

I understand that Sandler is not much of a draw overseas, but the performance of The Longest Yard in Italy is beyond pitiful. It made 70,000 Euros ($84,000) in its opening weekend.

It barely beat Alone in the Dark and came behind the 4th weekend gross of Boogeyman.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" stayed tasty at a mild foreign box office with $14.36 million at more than 2,500 playdates in 23 markets, while "The Island" continued to perform far better internationally than Stateside.
Warner's "Charlie," with back-to-back foreign weekend wins, has now cumed $67.2 million internationally and $236 million worldwide. The Johnny DeppJohnny Depp vehicle generated more than half its offshore takings from the U.K. with $8 million in its sophomore seshsesh, representing a 42% decline and lifting the BlightyBlighty cume to $34.2 million -- triple the second weekend of "Fantastic Four" and 5% better than the second-weekend gross for "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban."

"Charlie" stayed in first in Mexico with a 32% decline to $990,350 with a 19% share of the market. It opened in first in Taiwan with $720,200 at 63 sites, in the Philippines with $330,000 at 30 and in Argentina with $209,400 at 47.

Rather than going with a worldwide day-and-date launch, Warner's has opted for a gradual release of "Charlie." The family fantasy will open next weekend in Germany, Hong Kong, Portugal and Spain.

Warner's "The Island" finished a solid second with $12.66 million from nearly 3,000 prints in 20 markets, lifting foreign cume to $42.5 million -- already $11.6 million ahead of the disappointing domestic cume. Best performance for the Michael BayMichael Bay actioner came from its Spanish opener with $2.44 million at 469 playdates, leading the market with a 47% share and 19% better than the launch of "Pearl Harbor."

German opening of "The Island" grossed $2.41 million at 721 locations, on parpar with "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy." Brazilian launch ranked first with $908,200 at 250, 25% higher than "Bad Boys 2," as did the Norwegian opening with $378,600 at 60.

Holdover bizbiz for "The Island" looked particularly solid in South Korea with a 24% third frame decline to $2.3 million for a territorial cume of $16.67 million -- better than half the Stateside total. Pic's cloning themes have evidently resonated with filmgoers in Korea, home of the world's first successfully cloned dog.

Japanese business for "The Island" was more moderate with a 40% decline to $783,900, lifting the market's three-week cume to $7.3 million; pic dropped 32% to $930,300 in the Australian soph sesh to finish first and push the Oz cume to $2.85 million. "The Island" launches next weekend in Holland, Mexico, Russia, South Africa and the U.K.

BVI's family-friendly "Herbie: Fully Loaded" showed moderate offshore traction with $9.5 million at 4,100 playdates, led by a French launch of $3 million at 575, 25% better than "102 Dalmatians." "Herbie" also opened in the U.K. with $1.5 million at 440, in Germany with $1.3 million at 540, in Oz with $520,000, in Switzerland with $385,000 and in Hong Kong with $296,000.

"Herbie" declined 39% in Mexico to $553,000 at 400 for a fourth-place finish and $4.9 million after three weeks. Pic has cumed $31.5 million offshore to go along with $63.5 million domestically.

As usual for offshore moviegoing this year, the frame's overall business paled in comparison to the same weekend of 2004. "Charlie," "The Island" and "Herbie" combined for $36.6 million, while the top three of the year-ago frame totaled $53.7 million -- "I, Robot" with $31.1 million, "Spider-Man 2" with $12.2 million and "King Arthur" with $10.2 million.

Another family favefave, UIP's "Madagascar," finished a close fourth to "Herbie" with $8.2 million, led by $2.9 million in its fourth German sesh and $1.7 million in its fourth Brit frame to lift cumes in both markets past $33 million. ToonToon's foreign total has hit $238 million; worldwide cume has crossed $426 million.

UIP's "War of the Worlds," one of the few 2005 tentpoles that's met expectations, stayed somewhat sturdy in its sixth sesh with $5.8 million, lifting its offshore total to $324 million and worldwide cume to $548 million. "War" took in $1 million in the U.K. and $900,000 in Japan to lift totals in those markets to $52.1 million and $45.7 million, respectively.

Fox's "Fantastic Four" remained a moderate performer with $4.9 million at 2,261 engagements, led by $1.4 million at 388 in its third Brit frame and $1.2 million at 610 for its third sesh in France. "Four," which has cumed $120 million offshore, also launched in first in Denmark with $645,000 at 62.

Sony's "Stealth" lived up to its name with a miniscule $3.6 million at 1,615 sites in 17 markets, pushing foreign cume to $10.5 million and two-week worldwide total to $35 million. The film opened mildly in the U.K. with $920,000 at 380; it led in India among Hollywood pics with $280,000 at 188.

By contrast, the year's leading performer, "Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith," continued to generate decent numbers in Japan -- its final market -- as it led for the fifth consecutive frame with $2.4 million at 599 playdates. Japanese cume for "Sith" has hit $58.4 million; foreign cume has reached $439 million; worldwide total is at $817 million, the 11th highest of all time.

UIP's "Skeleton Key," which opens Friday in the U.S., continued to scare up only middling numbers with $2.29 million for the weekend in four foreign markets for a $6.4 million offshore cume. The Kate HudsonKate Hudson vehicle launched mildly in France with $950,000 at 246 locations in its first five days.

Fox's "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" opened impressively in first in Belgium with $1.7 million at 80 sites, and its Dutch soph sesh declined just 18% to $759,000 at 100. Fox's foreign cume on "Smith" has gone past $140 million.

Warner's "Batman Begins" still showed some legs with $1.56 million at 1,300 sites in 50 countries, including $326,000 at 87 in its Swedish soph sesh, lifting the foreign Batcume past $160 million and worldwide Batgross near $360 million.

Other scattered openings included Sony's "The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl" in first place in Russia with $850,000, BVI's "Dark Water" in second in Mexico with $754,000 at 250, UIP's "Dawn of the Dead" in third in Australia with $475,000 at 150, Fox's "Guess Who" in France with $428,000 at 126 and BVI's "Sin City" in first in Argentina with $170,000.

SITH earned $2.4 mil for a total of $58.4 mil in Japan.

Do most people still think SITH will earn $100+ mil in Japan?

Yep. Obon holidays are 8/13-16. After next weekend, ROTS should be approx. at $70M. (AOTC made $11m during these 7 days.)

I went to see Charlie mid-week during the day here in the UK (at twelve minutes past noon to be precise), and it was packed. The cinema I go to rarely has more than four people at a show at that time, but this time the screen was nearly full. I asked the refreshment vendor what was going on (thinking there might be some kind of party happening or somesuch), and he said it was because of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. They'd been run off their feet all week because of the demand.

That would certainly explain the boffo mid-week numbers for Charlie. Needless to say, I'm giddy!

It made $12M in the UK during the week (M-T) which is quite impressive. I am surprised, even shocked that Charlie is performing better than Batman Begins overseas.

Really!? I'm surprised as well. I mean I hoped it would do well, but Christ.

On the downside, the kids that were sat around me seemed rather non-plussed by the film. They certainly wouldn't shut the fuck up throughout.
