Post ROTS Launches Attack on Shrek 2 Boxoffice Record
In the spirit of my previous successful, and at times controversial thread over at BOM, I am once again presenting Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith Launches Attack on Shrek 2 Boxoffice record.

Previous Threads at BOM:

AOTC Launches Attack on Spiderman Boxoffice Record

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/forums/viewtopic.htm?t=5168&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=aotc&start=0

The Two Tower Launches Attack on Spiderman Boxoffice Record

Some of you know me as a die-hard Star Wars fan. Some may even call me a franatic, which is fine with me. There’s nothing wrong with a little franaticism to make things interesting, as long as you don’t wear explosive belts around your waist.

Return of the Sith’s record breaking opening weekend was Redemption in many ways. Redemption for ATOC’s beating at the hands of that insect (ararchnid) Schmiderman. Redemption for being overtaken on second place in the all time domestic boxoffice list by that oversized Hulk on Steroid, Shrmek. Looking back, Shrek 2’s $440 US boxoffice was overhyped and undeserved. In ten years, Shrek would be nothing but a fart-in-the-wind, which explains why its DVD sales are doing so poorly. It does not deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Star Wars.

Ok, here’s how it works, we all know that ROTS proably won’t have the legs of Phantom Menace, and that it’ll have better legs than AOTC. So, we can agree that it’ll fall somewhere in the middle. Therefore, by taking the average % change on the weekly basis, you can project the final tally for ROTS.

Unlike loyalfromlondon and BKB’s thread which has absolutely no scientific basis, my theory came with hard cold numbers. And unlike mdana’s tracking thread, which nobody can understand (I gave up half way through the first post), this method is user friendly and easy to understand. Simple yet effective, no?

Also, we will be able to track its progress week-by-week, so that we can measure whether it’s ahead, on par, or behind. By the end of the day, according to my chart, ROTS will make $520 Million domestically.

Nothing against you, but HOW MANY ROTS threads do we need? For simple tracking there is Nebs' thread, no?

My mistake, I was thinking of Return of the Jedi. It's been corrected.

Nebs's thread does not contain any scientific data in his prediction.

Then, there's loyalfromlondon's "The Force is strong: Sith will make $470"

BKB's "BKB predicts $500 Million for the Sith",

and mdana's Tracking Thread.

Each has its own merits. Each has its own formula (although, loyalfromlondon and BKB has no scientific data to back it up). In the end, it comes down to who has the best formula to predict boxoffice. You have a problem with that?

Week 2's numbers are up. It's tracking -9.4% below my estimate, which $520*90.6% = $470 M. Still able to beat Shrek handily.

I think RotS will beat Shrek 2's fastest-to-$300M record by a hair, with $300-301M in 17 days. However, it won't beat it for the $400M record.

And since Star Wars will make more because it is better and therefore more "deserving," hmmm? We've had fanboy wars over the boxoffice : quality relationship HOW many times?

Umm, Eren Brokowitchz,

I'm probably older than you, so don't ask me about HOW many relationships I have.

But the fact is, STAR WARS will be remembered as a Phenomenon that passes as The Passage of Time. It's beyond how much it makes at the boxoffice. It is still popular after more than 25 years. It has a HUGE fan club, and a CULT following. There are STAR WARS conventions just for that theme alone.

Now compare that to SHRMEK. What has it got for it? Beside the FART jokes, and ugly Princess (spoils my childhood of what a princess should look like), it should not be making the kind of money it did. It's a travesty that a piece of sh*t like that was able to make $440 Million, and it says something about the intelligence of kids in the US these days. It also says something about the parents who brings them to see it again, and again.

Twenty five years from now (heck even 10 years from now), Shrek will be remembered as a FART-IN-THE-WIND. You mark my word on this! In fact, it has already begun, as sales of Shrek DVD are disappointing. It's only a matter of time before people realize that Shrek was over-hyped and SUCKS. When Shrek 3 comes out, don't bring your kids to see it.

PS I see that Limac has created a thread asking How in the World Shrek can make this kind of money. I take it that he was inspired from this thread, and went to create that thread. Thank You, I'll take the credit for that one.

Your pardon, I misunderstood. Your entire thread is about how RotS will "lay a beating" to Shrek 2 at the box office. In the spirit of box office, I replied that Shrek 2, fart in the wind or not, will probably keep ahead of RotS, fan clubs and conventions or not.

Very suddenly, the topic has shifted to how "it's beyond how much it makes at the boxoffice." That's the usual behavior of SW fans -- retreat to 1976.

Well, if box office is no longer the topic of this thread, I humbly suggest that it be moved from the Box Office Forum to the Cinemania Forum, where all the fanboys can dredge up their old screechings about how their respective franchises will Pass the Test Of Time.

Well, i think we all know that SW will not pass Shrek. Unless it starts to get MBFGW legs, this is guarnateed to end with about 370-385 mill. A great feat, but far from that fuckin ogre guy. :sw:
