 The Hall of Bad Predictions
What are your worst predictions ever? Just don't include movies that everyone did bad on, just you. My list:
1. Spongebob Squarepants - I thought it could do a $70 million opening weekend, and over $300 million total, beating The Incredibles. Hee hee.
2. I, Robot's Total - After its $50 million opening weekend, I thought it was going to make $200 million total.
3. Shark Tale's 2nd Weekend - For some reason I thought it was dropping over 50% from assuming too much after a Tuesday drop.
4. Mr. 3000 - I don't know why I wanted this movie to do well. I predicted a $16 million opening weekend and a $50 million + total. It only got $8.7 mil opening weekend.
5. Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid - I thought the TV spots were excellent and I predicted a $20 million opening weekend. It got $12.8 million.
6. A Cinderella Story - I listened to someone's raging anticipation for the movie and predicted an $18 million weekend when it only got about $13 million.
7. Hidalgo - Thought it was for sure going to make $100 million total and have a $30 million opening weekend.
8. Garfield - I predicted a $33 million opening weekend for it, when it only made around $22 million.
9. The Ladykillers - thought it would make $100 million because of Tom Hanks. Glad I dropped that logic before The Terminal opened.
10. Ladder 49 - wasn't too far off on the opening, but I thought it could make $100 million.
Oh yes, and:
11. Star Wars: Episode III - was sure it wasn't going to make $300 million
12. The Cat in the Hat - I loved the Grinch, so I predicted a $60 million opening and $200 million total (though this was before I got better at predicting)
13. Sin City - never though it would break, predicting less than $18 million opening, and $45 total
14. Constantine - same with Sin City, except I predicted a little higher
15. Welcome to Mooseport - I think Romano is the best, so I wanted this to do good, so I predicted almost double the actual opening weeken
16. Catwoman - I thought all the bad buzz was just in the internet, so I predicted about $26 million opening weekend

I haven't predicted much in a while. I'd say my worst so far (that no one else messed up on) were $35+ million for Day After Tomorrow's 2nd weekend and under $4 million for Bridget Jones: Edge of Reason opening weekend.

Hmm, won't rank mine, but I can think of a couple. Really, none of us is perfect and making mistakes every now and then is fine.
Here are my biggest:
xXx: State of the Union - I predicted $40+ million for its opening all the way and the week before its release, I realized it won't do that much, so I went down to around $38 million. It won't even make that in total.
Team America: World Police - Okay, who was NOT wrong on this one? I thought, it'd easily make $20+ million opening weekend and $50+ million in total
Shall We Dance - I thought this one wouldn't make $25 million IN TOTAL.
Troy - I have been absolutely certain that it'd cross $200 million in total with ease (before it opened) despite DPo7's efforts to convince me otherwise
The Butterfly Effect - I thought this is going to have bad, bad legs. Once again, DP07 was right, I wasn't
Reign of Fire - Well, okay, I was just starting my predicting career back then, but I saw a $35+ million opening for it and a total of $120+ million. Boy, was I wrong...
Star Trek: Nemesis - I predicted a $302 million opening and a total of just over $100 million. Hmmm...
The Ladykillers - I thought it'd make $80+ million in total, just because of Hanks.
I thought The Bourne Supremacy would open just a little better than the original, to around $35 million and finish just north of $100 million.
Those are the ones that come to my head right away. I am sure, DP07 can remind me of more

Ah, I see Casey edited his post to add Cat in the Hat and I remembered that I predicted a $200+ million total for it as well.

About 50% of mine are terrible, hence why I normally average about 65-75% in predicting games and generally stay away from them.
A few that I can remember:
Predicted $30 million opening for Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, or $25 million for its wide expansion if I remember correctly when the release pattern was changed.
Predicted, at one point, $9 million opening for Sin City until I upped it just before the release.
That's all I can remember. At the moment at least.

If Briget Jones opened normally wide and didn't try the limited approach first, I am sure it would have opened to $20+ million easily.

I had 48 for Beauty Shop, so that's only about 75% accuracy (its at 36), and 65-70 for MC2 (which is only at 49-ish). Phew...for a minute there I was worried.... neostorm wrote: Can this include future bad predictions?? I'm predicting $115 Million for HP4 (opening weekend)

Well I actually have this tendency to either be pretty close on movies or completely off. This year movies I've been off over 10 million off on are:
Kingdom of Heaven - I was thinkng about 30 million opening weekend, it did about 19. The trouble was a few weeks before I thought over 120 million total, though I did come to my senses a week or two before.
xXx: State of the Union - Yeah, I think you guys can probably figure this one out for yourselves
The Ring Two - This is probably one of my three biggest. I went with 70 million opening weekend, just less then double what it did. #-o
And on a side note, I predicted 12 million for Kung Fu Hustle's opening weekend, double it's six million. I also guessed 14 million for Diary of a Mad Black Woman, though it did about 22 million if I'm not mistaken.
Otherwise, The Wedding Date, White Noise, and Star Wars are the only movies I've been wrong with by over 5 million for final predictions on Wednesday/Thursday if I'm not mistaken. As for past years, I'll list them when I'm a bit more awake to dig into my memory, 240 million for Day After Tomorrow comes to mind, though I nailed the opening weekend. Also, I was 15 million off for Riddick's opening weekend, and thought it would do about 45 million more total then it did. Otherwise, yeah, let me sleep on this one and list some big stinkers.
Oh yeah, there's always The Passion, the true king of my bad predictions. 65 million total, that's definitely a rare case of my bias completely getting in the way of rational thoughts. ](*,) It's still one damn boring movie though.

1- The Last Samurai: 44.5 m opening -------------> actual 24.3
2- The Passion Of The Christ: 52.5 five day opening --------------> actual 125.2
3- Welcome To Mooseport : 14.9 m opening-----------------> actual 6.8
4- Troy: 65 m opening------------------> actual 46.5
Also The Passion Of The Christ recut: 4 m opening----------------> actual 0.2 ( I know everyone got 0's for this one, but I predicted 20 times the actual number, definitely my worst prediction ever )
Just to name a few, and a great thread by the way.

Gee, worst predictions ever?? Probably AOTC with a gross of 500 Million Domestically and look what it made?? Then came The HULK at 400 Million and Holy Christ, look what it made(GASP) 132 Million.. I honestly thought it was gonna be as popular as SPIDERMAN since it is a well recognized MARVEL Property so it only seemed natural. Then the inevitable Super Bowl Backlash ensued followed by piracy of an unfinished movie being passed off as finished and the Marketing was wishy washy in that they didn't know who to cater this to: Kids or adults.. The product placement sucked.. Everything just went fucking Awry with this film.. :bur:
Then there was AVP and how I predicted 250-300 Million = I mean, AVP was awesome and I was so confident it would make a killing and techincally it did, just not what I predicted.. It turned into quite a brouhaha over at RT over it..

Hehe, well as awful a movie White Noise is, I know you loved the subject matter, and we've had this argument before, so I guess there ain't much to say on that topic. But hey, at least I agree that Amityville Horror is easily the best horror flick of the year.

haha, I can't think of any others. Well, maybe Shrek 2, Meet the Fockers, Ocean's Twelve and The Last Samurai, although I don't remember exactly what you predicted for all of those. Those were 4 of my good predictions though that most on the boards disagreed with. heh
Anyway, as for myself, I can just copy and paste what you said about xXx 2 and Reign of Fire. For me ROF was also when I first began predicting.
Red Dragon, Gangs of New York, Spanglish, Lilo & Stitch, Minority Report, American Wedding, Elektra, Blade: Trinity, Hellboy, Riddick, Kingdom of Heaven, and especially The Ring Two would go on my list for overpredictions. Also, as MG Casey said, I broke my rule of predicting poor legs for action movies, and went with 200m for I, Robot after release. The Cat in the Hat and Shark Tale are two others that I thought would reach 200m. However, I was good for Shark Tale's legs (I had, I think, the highest second weekend prediction on the boards which turned out to be too low, heh), but not for TCITH as I still thought it would hit 150m after the opening.
The Village is one movie I was close on for the total, but way off on overall. I thought it would open near 30m (although I changed that to 43m by the release) and have good legs. Turned out to be just the opposite.
As for underpredictions, my early Troy prediction of 65m was way off, but at by the time it got near release I was at 41m/121m and I always have the legs nailed for that one. Also, for ROTS my early predictions under 280m were off, but at least my late weekend prediction of 150m/106m was close. Hopefully I can say the same thing as with Troy about the 317m total prediction eventually being close, and nailing the legs.
Other under-predictions: Hitch, Sweet Home Alabama, Coach Carter, Friday Night Lights, Scooby Doo, The Santa Clause 2, Signs, Barbershop, Seabiscuit, Scary Movie 3, and Spy Kids 3D. Although just about everyone was too low on the last two.
Quite a few were from early in my predicting days, but many are quite recent.

xXx: State of the Union - $45 million - no comment
House of Wax - $22 million opening weekend - I thought Paris Hilton and the release date would be good enough
Team America: World Police - $25 million opening weekend - I was so confident in this.
Sin City - $13 million opening weekend (months before release) - I thought the black and white would turn people off.
The Ring Two - $60 million opening weekend - yeah, no comment.
Troy - $60 million opening weekend - I thought the great cast and release date would bring people in.
Diary of a Mad Black Woman - $7 million opening weekend - WHAT THE F*@$!
National Treasure - $18 million opening weekend - This shocked me, too.
