Hurry up and get released Bewitched (though technically it's more high concept comedy than romcom).

Monster in Law has the distinct advantage of being the only femme targeted comedy out right now and has no competition in the market; plus summer weekdays and this coming Memorial weekend should hoist its gross way above what it deserves.

These numbers seem pretty good for Star Wars and should spell a sub 50% drop for Sith over the 3 day. I don't think that Madgascar/Longest will prove very formidable.

Wow, I guess the canadian holiday had quite an impact Monday. I feel disapointed, yet the Sith number really is impressive on any objective scale.

Most likely true, but it does come down to how well it plays in Japan. It is not utterly outisde the realm of possiblity for it to throw up a 200+ figure there.

Im still miffed that last year's fantastic "13 Going on 30" is going to have pulled in considerably less than this film by the end of its run thanks in large part to Mean Girls and the female-lead track record.

But it seems there has to be a strong male lead or two major stars to make a romantic comedy work on a large scale.

I so wish they could have switched timeslots and years.

OK, my prediction of ROTS was 321 million, and hmm, I'm not sure if I should raise it so much yet. This coming weekend will really show what happens but right now, I will tentatively raise my prediction to 353 million, but I wouldn't be suprised if it falls short. Unlike some people here, I think the openers this weekend can do some massive damage. Think what Bruce Almighty did to poor Reloaded, I say at least Madagascar and Longest Yard combined can beat Bruce's opening gross :wink:

I don't think Bruce had much of a say in Reloaded's implosion. It was the horrible WOM that slaughtered the film.

Madagascar and Yard are not doing that well in early reviews. i don't see them breaking into top place this week, but it's going to be close. Sith will take first, Madagascar will get the counter-programming boost to second (prolly within 10 million of Sith) and Yard will round out to the top 3 (within 10 million of Madagascar). This will be the weekend Monster-in_law might suffer because women will take kiddies to the family friendly Madagascar. This will also be Sith's last week ontop. I expect it to fall pretty quickly, the following two weekends afterwards. Especially by the time Batman comes out.

And DOUBLE TPM's gross? Highly doubtful.

Once again, remember what Day After Tomorrow did to Shrek 2...NOTHING. They both opened at 70+ million.

Not saying its likely, just saying its possible. Course the exchange rate changes work against it. Or do they work for it which would help. Now I've confused myself. My point is simply the theme may resonate to a degree that allows for it.

Seriously... everybody is biased in its own way most of the time. And wether a hater or a fanboy, you are actually two sides of the same coin, so... If we discredit people for being "haters", we should discredit the fanboys as well, and then, nobody would be allowed to predict, specially this big franchise films.

Do you honestly think a weekend like last year is going to be repeated just like that? No, I don't think so. Remember we have two big openers this time, and ROTS doesn't have the kid appeal that Shrek 2 had, especially with the darker mood and PG-13 rating. Madagascar can definitely do SOMETHING to ROTS. Don't expect some crazy 11% drop for ROTS like Shrek 2 did. I say an under 50% drop is still achievable, but the competition will be fierce this time around. Madagascar will take some of ROTS's kiddie audience, and The Longest Yard will take some of ROTS's teen audience. You can't deny that. The Day After Tomorrow was aiming at a completely different demographic from Shrek 2. That's why it did so well. A wide appeal movie can very well destroy a fanboy movie, but I'm giving ROTS the benefit of the doubt and having it drop ONLY 50%. It's still gonna be a huge weekend, and still possibly close to a recordbreaker:

Madagascar - 60~70 million 3-day / 75~90 million 4-day
ROTS - 60~70 million 3-day / 75~90 million 4-day
Longest Yard - 30~40 million 3-day / 40~55 million 4-day

Top 3 combined can be 150~180 3-day / 190~235 million 4-day

Add the rest of the top 12 and last year's record can be history! :wink:

The exchange rate works for it, definitely. Still, I'd say $130 million is the ceiling for ROTS in Japan.
