Well, this weekend will be down again from the year before, but that's because we had a blockbuster opening last year.

I think this eases the slump a bit. I'm still amazed that Monster-in-Law and (probably) Kicking & Screaming will open with more than Kingdom of Heaven did.

If both Kicking & Screaming and Monster-in-Law open to over $20m. Then they two of them would equal the opening of last year's Troy.

Yes, but Van Helsing also made over $20M on last year's weekend.

No, it made less than $20m.

Um, actually...

2 1 Van Helsing $20,727,515 -59.9% $85,095,305

Either way, that's not my point. I'm saying that this weekend will most likely fall short of last year's respective weekend.

Also? Please get your facts straight next time.

Sorry. I thought it fell to $18m. That must be HULK i am thinking of.

Oooh, nice weekend. Finally.

Good for MONSTER IN LAW, Jlo is officially not a curse anymore (Shall We Dance hitting, and now this.)

Solid for KICKING AND SCREAMING and UNLEASHED too.

Massive Ouch for KINGDOM OF HEAVEN.

But surprisingly solid for HOUSE OF WAX, could be below 50% drop this weekend, W00t! $30M total here we come!

HOUSE OF WAX had the 2nd smallest FRIDAY to FRIDAY drop for any horror movie this year:

-54.7%%

Compared to this years horrors and their friday to friday drops:

White Noise (-58%) W/E drop -50%
Hide and Seek (-60.2%) W/E drop -59.4%
Boogeyman (-59.2%) W/E drop -46.2%
Amityville Horror (-51%) W/E drop -41.7%
Cursed (-65.4%) W/E drop -59.9%
The Ring Two (-63.8%) W/E drop -61.2%

Platinum Dune's AMITYVILLE HORROR is the only other horror movie to have a FRI to FRI drop smaller.

Woohoo for HOUSE OF WAX.

Decent for Unleashed, probably wont be making back its budget domestically though. I cant belive Unleashed cost more then Cradle 2 the Grave.

*psst* My bet is that they just were very white movies, and they didn't put any marketing towards brothers like us. ;)

Hehe, seriously though, pleasant surprise with the box office actually healing itself a bit. Unleashed did very solid business, which I'm very thankful for. Myself, I'd bet that Rogue is being held on a very tight leash and can't get out the marketing and theater counts it wants to from it's parent companies. Otherwise, Monster-in-Law did end up doing quite well, I barely saw any ads but I guess they just really didn't push any marketing at me. In retrospect, it's a lot broader then all the other chick flicks which have dissapointed/bombed in the last two months. At least Maverikk won't be right either, so neither of us can laugh in the others face. ;) As for Kicking and Screaming, it opened solidly, but I knew it wouldn't be the 30 million behemoth people were predicting. Oh, and don't worry folks, I won't go ahead and start saying that it COULD have a such-and-such multiplier to beat Monster-in-Law (even though it might...)

Correction, I was much righter than you. My prediction was close enough that I'm not hanging my head. I'll be closer than quite a few were, and your prediction was one of the furthest off. I also thought it to be #1, you didn't.

Don't sweat it, MovieDude. At least you got House of Wax right. There are some people who miss REALLY BADLY every week, and they still try to act as if they can read the market and we all should listen to their words of wisdom. I know who the people are that I take seriously and not, but it's all just in fun, so it doesn't really matter. The market is ever changing, and I think too many make the mistake of relying on trends, and yes, judging all movies genres by the same amount of yahoo activity is not the best barometer.

Well Kicking and Screaming could still be #1. You were righter then me, but still wrong. ;) Hehe, but in all seriousness, you did come very close, much moreso then me. But hey, we can't get them all right. Your time will come too, just probably not for awhile ;) I do think though that right now trends might not be the best key to follow, just look at how both this week's openers will perform better then Kingdom of Heaven, and maybe since April 1st. Anyways, I wouldn't call out Yahoo though, xiayun and DP07 pretty much nailed it this week with all openeres.

Well, that's pretty good for my Derby. :D Better if Unleashed falls short of 10m, which I think it will. Probably about 20m total for it.

I thought Monster-In-Law would do pretty well. One of the best advertised of the year IMO.

K&S did well, but I don't think it will reach 70m. ROTS and Madagascar should cut the legs short.

 @ Mindhunters. I do want to see it though; the trailer looked pretty good.

Mindhunters actually opened.

After being pushed back for two years. I thought they were going to pull a January 2004 and move it a few days before it opened.

Plus, we don't judge films from different genres by "the same amount of yahoo activity," as that's where ratios come in.

I think you both do a great job with that. Thanks for doing that for us, I enjoy the heck out of following those updates. I still don't think it's accurate with certain movie types like it is with others.

Hehe, you and your 2.0 multipliers... just like xXx would only be making 20 million? C'mon man, a movie with this good of WOM? I know your tricks DP. ;)

After opening weekend I was predicting 26m for xXx 2. Don't look now, but it looks to be headed there with the drop this weekend in addition to the fact that it will lose nearly all its theaters over the next two weeks.

BTW, check the multipliers for "The One" and "Cradle 2 the Grave".

To sum up this thread, every movie pretty well sucked at the box office this weekend and in less than a week, all of them will be singlehandedly destroyed to the point where there will be DVD Release dates for these movies..

I don't think that "every movie pretty well sucked" just because nothing's going to open over $25M.

Are you suggesting $23M for Monster-in-Law is a "suckish" performance? The number for Kicking & Screaming? Crash's hold?

I mean it's good for what it is, but when it comes right down to it, moviegoers really are waiting for next weekend more than anything and all these other movies are merely slim pickins and just something to hold folks over.. Next weekend, these movies will be virtually non-existent..

BKB...you didn't read my May preview on the front page?

Monster-in-Law is the only movie that caters to the female demographic. It's the only movie that's going to survive the upcoming power of Sith, as well as the movies that come out the following week. I expect the rest to drop off much quicker. Crash will hold ok, too.

Woohoo! I knew MIL would top out kicking and screaming this weekend. Just intution. I have no idea what all these ratio and tracking threads are about.
That's probably why I'm usually wrong.

BTW. Before I left yesterday, I went with a walk and there was a line out the door and wrapping around the block (no joke, waiting outside) for Mad Hot Ballroom.

That's going to break 40,000/theatre average this weekend for sure.

I see House of Wax pulling a shocker with a 20% increase next weekend. The reviews are just phenomenal for the film.

Crash should hold fairly well.

Monster in Law has the chance of holding it's own well enough if people like the movie. As said, a portion of the female audience (or those who don't like SW) might opt for this film while the others go see Revenge of the Cyst.

Its not sucky, but it aint great. Especially with the large cost.

Monster In Law will be destroyed by sith too, believe it or not LOTS of women like Star Wars too :P
The word of mouth is very mediocre and that dosent bode well with the forthcoming blockbusters

I'm glad that you can tell that the WOM in the states in very medicore all the way from over across the seas. I think WOM is going to be fine. I definitely am not relying on yahoo and IMDB to give me the 'facts" on that.

Speaking of cost, do you know exactly what the cost was? Not what the budget was, because , lord knows, there are a multitude of ways to offset costs, which is why budgets aren't anything to pay much attention to in this day and age.
