 Re: Twisters
Looks strong but it needs to open on the 12th or it will collapse against Deadpool in its 2nd weekend

 Re: Twisters
Agreed. It needs to move up a week so as not to be so close to D&W. Perhaps they fear DM4 more.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 dropped from $240 million to $59m.
The same is happening with Twisters. It's just another Hurricane Heist, imo. Looks very generic, and Glen Powell is no Brad Pitt. That's the level of star this film needs. And I hear you collectively say "but ... but... but...Bill Paxton", and I say; this isn't 1996. It is a different time. A CG/live-action split does not wow people anymore. Nobody went to see Twister because of Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt's chemistry.
Universal will do a better job than Entertainment Studios did with Hurricane Heist, so it will do reasonably well but it will not reinvigorate the disaster franchise or anything. It will just be another $80-$150m summer "blockbuster". Interesting. I tend to agree that there is no real love for Twister. Yeah, sure it massively overperformed in 1996. It's legs were damn great as its second and third weekend holds were impressive even for the mid 90s (Mission Impossible opened in it's 3rd weekend). Yet this feels like ID4 (2016) all over again but with slightly more potential. Time will tell but something like $150-$200m would be a breakout to me. Not $300m as some pundits are suggesting.

 Re: Twisters
Twister '96 is forgotten but I would say there is a chance there is an appetite for a tornado movie irrespective of the Twister '96 brand. There's not really been a ton since. The Day After Tomorrow, and...? It's like no one really bothered after the original Twister. It's been long enough that young audiences don't know about that movie, but everyone knows about tornadoes and tornadoes are always cool. They're destructive cyclones of wind that tear through buildings and lift cars up. Add country music, hot actors, it just might work. Not sure why they spent $200M on it though. The original grossed just a smidge under $500M. The new one might end up in the same ballpark, but with 5x the budget?? It's giving money laundering.

 Re: Twisters
I loved Minari and this is such a unique follow up choice but growing up in the midwest will give him an authentic perspective.
I feel he will pull off what Chloe couldn't with Marvels, a quality actioner.

Tornadoes aren't always cool. And since anybody with a laptop can make cheap storm movies (and did! loads of DTV examples) it probably wasn't worth the expense to the major studios unless they could attach a brand.

You forgot Sharknado, that was huge when it first aired.

 Re: Twisters
Presales started yesterday and so far its doing meh. But I am not sure this is the movie that will start selling like 6 weeks to release. Plus it has a terrible release date opening week before Deadpool. Should have instead opened in May :-(

 Re: Twisters
The studios dont have enough films to release yet the ones they do have are given pathetic release dates. Well done studios!

 Re: Twisters
They aren't releasing on the 12th because they want Despicable Me to have premium screens longer. Opening the weekend before Deadpool is insane though. Next weekend may have been better, but again, it would be giving up premium screens the weekend after.

I think this would have been great in 1999, da bont made the wrong sequel. Though this could be speed 2 bad so maybe there is hope.

 Re: Twisters
Did Universal put a mini wind tunnel in anyone else’s theater to advertise this movie? Great marketing move.

 Re: Twisters
Twisters presales are crap. I hope it looks better close to release considering the expectations.

 Re: Twisters
With Horizons looking like a wasted opp for the heartland blockbuster, feels like Twisters could benefit. Minari was so good so I have higher hopes there now.

 Re: Twisters
Rubbish release data for Twister. That alone will hurt it.
I think $150m total would be a success at this point.

 Re: Twisters
This should have opened in May. Market was open for an action blockbuster. Or even August 1st week is better as rest of the month look like a wasteland to me.

The way I disagree with every single sentence here! There's enough room in the market for Twisters to coexist with Deadpool, IMO. Weather/disaster movies can strike a chord on occasion, and this doesn't seem like a film I would gauge by presales weeks in advance. Much like Bad Boys didn't look that impressive before and picked up a lot of momentum right before release? I would not underestimate the heartland appeal, either. Also disagree that August looks like a wasteland. I think Trap, It Ends With Us, and Alien: Romulus will all be solid hits, with Borderlands and Blink Twice as wild cards.

TRAP looks like a comeback vehicle for early aughts kinggs M Night and Josh Hartnett. It will really break out if it is any good.

 Re: Twisters
I'm going $200M+ on this. Go big or go home. I think we see Bad Boys / Inside Out 2 do well together and feel D&W and Twisters will be running the show end of July.

 Re: Twisters
I can't really imagine people feeling the need to buy tickets for this so far in advance. I have plans to go opening weekend to watch it on a premium screen, but we will just wait until the week of to get tickets. I wouldn't be that concerned about pre-sales at this point.
