Darth Indiana Bond wrote: Algren wrote: Darth Indiana Bond wrote: Will Barbie become the number one movie of the year? Will the go woke go broke meme final meet it’s biter demise? lol, nah. Barbie is an outlier. And not because it's woke. People aren't showing up in droves to see wokeness. I think you misunderstand what “go woke, go broke” means. It has little to do with being “woke” as an allure, and more to do with “woke” critic’s mentality that being “woke” will hurt your business more than help, many of this narrative’s biggest pushers go as to far as to claim it will ruin entire business empires as they fully root for the demise of businesses such as bud light and Disney. But it's obvioiously not true if you look at every woke element in every movie. "Go woke, go broke" surely implies the main focus is being woke, or that a project has been needlessly stuffed with wokeness. I don't believe Barbie is in that camp at all. It has so much more about it than being woke, unlike, say, Bros, whose main selling point was to try and be woke, and therefore it failed. I mean, if you want to include any woke element whatsoever, then obviously the GWGB idea isn't accurate. Captain Marvel is the perfect example of that.

What is even supposed to be "woke" in Captain Marvel? Does "woke" just mean "female protagonist" now?

 Re: BARBENHEIMER weekend thread
Captain Marvel was billed as, at the time, the most powerful Marvel hero (though she ended up losing a 1v1 to Thanos anyway.) That's very woke. Zack Snyder would never suggest that Wonder Woman was more powerful than Superman. The Jews will not replace us!
With Barbie, its simple. The movie did very well so its not part of the go woke, go broke campaign since it doesn't further the MAGA agenda. If it had bombed, then it would be yet another example of real America bringing woke Hollywood down.

Ah yes, strong character is male = not woke, strong character is female = very woke I didn't really like the film but there's nothing that's even billable as "woke" in it, people are just fuckin ridiculous.

Algren, my poor rational friend, you’re too logical, these Go Woke Go Brokers do in fact mean that any amount of wokeness is detrimental to a business

Exactly. I unfortunately spend way too much time reading social media comments, but it is everywhere. Now my YouTube feed is full of people like Critical Drinker who blast anything that appears “Left” as woke crap. Just watch his review on Glass Onion. He sounds intelligent with his cynical tone, but this is all a ruse to hide his lack of bias.

 Re: BARBENHEIMER weekend thread
There was also an Anne Hathaway one which I think they could have pulled off because The Devil Wears Prada and fashion could work for people to believe her in the role. Unless they put James Franco as Ken for an Oscars reunion. On the box office front, Barbie is at $337M globally already. Just from domestic holdovers, it would be at $705M worldwide if it does $530M domestically total. Going to be interesting to see if it can catch up to Mario's $1,350,021,487. Oppenheimer is at $174 million worldwide. If it gets a 4.5X domestic multiplier for $371M, would get to $463M globally already. How cool it would be to see both of see leg it out to $1B but Oppenheimer will need out of this world legs.

 Re: BARBENHEIMER weekend thread
Presales for today are so strong Charlie thinks barbenheimer can do 40m+. Barbie 25m+ and Oppenheimer 15m+. Would be beyond crazy if those numbers are achieved. Easily the most impressive day for both movies.

After watching both, I am super impressed by Oppenheimer.... it's a 3 hour drama movie with one "action scene" yet it opened to $80mil. What the actual fuck?

 Re: BARBENHEIMER weekend thread
Quote: AMC Theatres® (NYSE:AMC & APE), the largest theatrical exhibitor in the United States and the world, today announced it set multiple post-reopening records, as the company recorded more than 7.8 million moviegoers at an AMC in the U.S. or ODEON Cinemas location internationally from Thursday to Sunday. This marks the most attendance and admissions revenue in a single weekend since 2019, which by definition means the most since theatres reopened in 2020.
Theatres were packed all weekend long, as AMC set post-reopening single-day attendance records on each of Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the United States. Saturday also marked AMC’s realizing its fifth highest single-day admissions ticket revenues recorded in the U.S. in AMC’s 103-year history.
In addition to high ticket revenues, Saturday saw AMC enjoying its second-highest ever food and beverage revenue day of all time, coming in behind the opening-weekend Saturday of AVENGERS: ENDGAME in May of 2019.
Of note, AMC’s Barbie Corvette collectable concession vessel was of particular interest to guests, as that item essentially sold out over the weekend. https://investor.amctheatres.com/newsro ... fault.aspxAMC is definitely trolling Paramount/Cruise here on MI7 "strong hold". That said 2nd biggest food/beverages sale is very impressive for sure.

 Re: BARBENHEIMER weekend thread
I could see holdovers from this weekend now bring the annual tally to closer to $6.2B.
Considering last year was at $7,369,357,270 could beat it by mid to late September.
Really hoping we get 1 or 2 more surprise August breakouts or a mega breakout. Would be really cool to keep the box office strong to end the summer.
$10B looks like a stretch but $9B is looking like it could be attainable as long as everything doesn't flop in Q4.

 Re: BARBENHEIMER weekend thread
Is it just me or does Sound's OW now feel like it happened a few months ago?
Barbenheimer and MI have happened since that time. Sound is only on Day 20(!) and made $125M.
So we're going to see Barbie do $500M+, Oppenheimer maybe $350M+, and Sound $200M all in the same month.
If Barbenheimer didn't happen it would have still been a pretty historical box office month for Sound's performance. The three of them together are going to do $1B+ domestic.

The latest impact of Barbenheimer is New Mexico tourism. Only open to visitors two days a year. Expect this October to be a big, big ticket. https://www.cnbc.com/2023/07/24/oppenhe ... -site.html

It's definitely a WTF situation. I'm happy that it seems Nolan has some more leverage on the Hollywood studios. It's not just Warner or Paramount (Interstellar) at this point. Now it's Universal too. He's one of the few people who can get non-franchise projects approved with a large budget, and now he gains even more support from the studio bosses.

Same Sunday drop as Black Panther's OW. Black Panther had a holiday on Monday that helped boost the Sunday number, so it's not an apples to apples comparison. TDK looks like the better comparison point for Barbie right now. Same release date, very similar numbers every day so far. Epic hold on Sunday for Barbie just like TDK. Both of them dropped 8.5%. Sounds like Barbie is going to have a phenomenal Monday number too!

Barbie and Mario ruling the 2023 domestic boxoffice with twin $500M+ behemoths. Who would have thunk it.
