By my calculations the last original animated movie to gross 100m was Coco. It’s insane that in 2015-16, Inside Out, secret life of Pets and Zootopia all grossed 330m+. Since then coco and Moana grossed 210m+ and that’s it

Imagine what Encanto could have done if it came out in 2022 instead of 2021. Its holiday weekdays would have been nuts.

 Re: Insidious/Joy Ride weekend thread
Updated 3day estimate for Sound of Freedom is $18.22M ($40.21M total). Needs a 4.28 multiplier to get to $100M. Also, the global box office was more exciting this weekend with a close race in the top 3. IJ5 $31.8M / $248M globally Insidious $31.4M / $64M Elemental $30M / $251M Transformers $7.6M / $407M The Flash $5M / $261M Insidious makes back its budget 4X in 3 days and has the biggest horror opening of the pandemic era.

 Re: Insidious/Joy Ride weekend thread
That's good for IJ to pull a $27M second weekend off of a $60M inflated holiday weekend. Yes, these are small numbers but it's a 55.3% drop. Sat was down only 41.3% so very well could have done high 40s if not for the holiday where it dropped 2.6% last Sunday. It needs a 3.9X multiplier to get to $200M. It's got MI and B+O so some big competition for adult audiences but with an OW demo of 45+ males it may still be leggy enough to pull a decent total.
$6.8M for Freedom on Sunday is $1.1M higher for a 3day weekend of $19.3M. Needs a 4.04X multiplier to get to $100M. Lots will depend on the hold next weekend but based on dailies seen so far it definitely is possible.

Rise of the Beasts' actual is in ... $5,106,022
Held better with actuals by 100k, just a 31% dip.

 Re: Insidious/Joy Ride weekend thread
What is determining the money distribution related to the box office for Sound of Freedom?
From what I know, people can donate money to Angel Studios (or a group associated with them anyway), and then people can get "free" tickets from them based on those donations. So, if someone donates $100, that'd equal roughly 10 free tickets for people to claim, right? Would that $100 automatically go toward the box-office, or does it only go to the film once the tickets are claimed? Does a percent of donations go toward Angel Studios or any groups associated with them?
Since this strategy has proven very successful, I imagine we'll see other studios test it out if the donated money isn't really kept track of.

 Re: Insidious/Joy Ride weekend thread
See, it's instances like this where the Thursday previews being rolled into the weekend number really annoy me. Indy actually won the weekend, it's just we're not counting its Thursday grosses like we are for Insidious: The Red Door. No wonder ITRD won the weekend if it gets four days to every other movie's three. All they had to do was call them "previews" and we're all fooled by it, lol.

I generally agree, but Insidious's previews were $5M, so even if you removed them it would still come out at #1 with $28M.

 Re: Insidious/Joy Ride weekend thread
IJ5 needs a 3.84X multiplier to get to $200M. It's got some intense competition but it's not 100% impossible. Sound of Freedom needs a 3.96X multiplier to get to $100M. Given the dailies so far it would be hilarious to have another movie beat The Flash if it can get there, especially with a crowdfunded marketing campaign. Elemental is still in double digits off of a $29.6M weekend?! Needs a 5.025X multiplier to get to $150M which seems not as far off as it once was. Turning into the leggiest Pixar movie in 28 years!!! That 18% drop is after an inflated Sunday so could very well have dropped closer to 10%-12% otherwise! Looks like we have another Puss In Boots type animated run here of a super disappointing OW and unreal legs to an absurd box office total. TLM needs a 3.92X multiplier to get to $300M. As long as it can hold onto enough theaters should coast past it.

So I see no chance for Sound of Freedom.

 Re: Insidious/Joy Ride weekend thread
On a weekend where competition/new releases was low, which led to lots of films having nice holds, Joy Ride only doing $5.8m is pretty pathetic. It was marketed rather heavily, but just shows the niche for this type of film just isn't large enough. It's also fun to see a film about travelling to China at a time when all press is negative about China, and the U.S. State Department has a travel advisory about not travelling to China. And the film looked so awfully unfunny. Crazy Rich Asians this is not. Such a different beast, and that obviously had a following before the movie, but was also a 'hidden dragon' one-off. And it's about Singapore. When the focus is on mainland China, people are turned off. Also what doesn't work is the merge of raunchy humour with Asian identity. While there is an appetite for it in certain places and among certain groups, generally not enough demand for it to deliver at the U.S. box office. An example is Due West: Our 3D Sex Journey, a Hong Kong erotic comedy from 2012. When it came out it was a hit and felt like everyone was talking about it. It did 18 million HKD, which translates to just $2.3 million, and just shows the disconnect between the comedy and the people at large.

 Re: Insidious/Joy Ride weekend thread
Monday #'s so far:
Insidious: The Red Door $3,500,000 $36,513,036 Indiana Jones $3,234,182 -73% $125,360,587 Elemental $1,567,909 -49% $111,192,211 Spider-Man $1,275,000 -58% $358,953,700 No Hard Feelings $780,000 -59% $41,347,081 The Little Mermaid $635,265 -54%$289,863,916 Joy Ride $561,904 $6,368,181 The Flash $310,000 -74% $105,520,665
Ouch for The Flash but what else is new? Maybe at $106.5M by Thursday? May limp to $110M.
Spider-verse may be at about $368M by the end of the weekend. Ever so close to $400M but will probably end up between $385M ish.
I'll give it to J Law, she does have bankability still to carry a movie like No Hard Feelings to $50M+ even if budget was higher than it needed to be.
IJ could be at $150M+ or so by the end of the weekend. Not good but well on its way to at least a 3X multiple.
Elemental could be at about $123M or so by the end of the weekend. At a 3.76X multiplier now with that Monday daily!
TLM will probably be at about $295M by the end of the weekend so ever so close to the big $300M.
Joy Ride at least seems like it could pull a 3X multiple. It's OW was so low but probably could pull an audience when it hits streaming.

An independent Christian movie is #1 and Hollywood is about to be completely paralyzed by the actors' strike.
