 Re: Barbie predictions
Just got my ticket for the early access screening, pretty full already. My showing is in Dolby, regular presales have no preium screens.

 Re: Barbie predictions
It looks like broad comedy, which should help women drag their boyfriends and husbands to see it. Though I agree no one who is straight and male will be seeing it for the most part if they are not a Noah baumbach greta gerwig fan

 Re: Barbie predictions
The Barbie buzz is ramping up quickly. It's trending on Twitter again nearly a month out with new promos. The plan with showings 2 days before opening day, pink popcorn and photo booths are turning this into a massive event.
I think we're gearing up for a zeitgeist type movie here at this point. It feels very reminiscent of the rapidly growing buzz before TPOTC, The Hunger Games and think this is turning into a mini Mario at this point.
IJ seems almost non-existing. The big box office event seems to be Barbie and I do wonder where the ceiling on it is as even if it is female audience skewing if it becomes the zeitgeist pop culture movie its going to go much wider as people feel they need to watch it to be in the know and understand references.

 Re: Barbie predictions
Initial presales point to a staggering opening, but we will have see if the trend holds.

 Re: Barbie predictions
I am thinking 70-80m range for now but presales are very promising. If Gerwig delivers as we expect, its ceiling is higher as final surge should be great. As I posted in the other thread, that weekend will see 2 movies over performing which is something we have not seen in a while. At BOT someone mentioned Venom/A Star is born combo several years ago both of which grossed over 200m.

 Re: Barbie predictions
I’m not even watching any trailers or seeing any memes, but somehow I’m feeling the megabuzz and drinking the pink Kool-Aid here. Like, gallons of crazy pink Kool-Aid:
let’s go $150m OW $400m total (O the Hunger Games / Mario comparisons feel right to me)
(Oppenheimer left in the dust with a very respectable $40m OW / $130m total)

 Re: Barbie predictions
I don't see $120M+, that seems way too high.... but 50 Shades (the first one) numbers seem likely. I just think you need men as well to get to $120M+ levels and this is too pink and girly for that.

 Re: Barbie predictions
I do think $90-100m is achievable. The buzz is strong and the market ripe.

 Re: Barbie predictions
Not trying to jinx anything but presales on this are massive. Not $60-70m massive. $120m+ massive. One of the most effective marketing campaigns of recent memory is really pushing this. It is way ahead of everything since Mario. BJ's prediction could be on point. Robbie has been beyond deserving of this type of mega smash. If this is any good, we are looking at the next huge post-covid overperformer and it will make WB forget all about the Flash There is def. some overlap buzz of the 2 opening together that will help both. Idk if I will end up seeing this film but I certainly hope it is successful. This is an extremely creative and original concept and no doubt most studios would never fund this type of project. Barbie name aside, it is a huge breath of fresh air relative to the seemingly endless stream of reboots. It was a risk for Robbie, Gosling, Gerwig, and the studio to green light this type of thing and it really looks like it may payoff. P.S. Barbie 2 100% needs to be a Christmas film and release. P.P.S. always great to see BJ on the forum

 Re: Barbie predictions
Toy nostalgia is a male nerd thing, girls wouldn't want around their boyfriend/husband talking to someone like Robbie at a party, and the romantic aspect is relatively low. So it doesn't make the most logical sense that this is the ultimate female blockbuster but not everything always makes sense, I guess it could also be successful with males. I doubted Maverick opening weekend last year and it did go that high so this could prove me wrong. I still think 75m is a great opening.

 Re: Barbie predictions
Yeah this has consistently been the most discussed movie with IRL friends this year, and the anticipation has seemed genuine even as people go "hahaha a Barbie movie, it looks good! maybe I'll see it lol!" especially with guys - I feel like that's part of what has driven the Barbie/Oppenheimer double feature jokes, people that think they "should" only be excited for one wanting to make an excuse to see both.
For opening weekend, I'm currently thinking:
Friday: $35M ($12M previews) Saturday: $26M Sunday: $22M
For $83M opening. Where it goes from there depends entirely on WOM, which feels like a variable with how high hype has gotten. If it's considered disappointing for whatever reason it would fall off pretty quickly and miss $200M total. If it's a bonafide crowdpleaser, $300M and top 3 of the summer becomes nearly certain.

Barbie is to girls like superheroes are to boys. Girls want to be Margot Robbie in a candy dreamland wearing fabulous dresses with a handsome Ken who wants her. Boys want to be Spider-Man swinging from buildings, fighting bad guys and getting the girl.

 Re: Barbie predictions
Barbie has become so much in pop culture at this point that it feels there is probably going to be a turn of zeitgeist groups of both guys and girls that end up seeing it together. It seems like its turning into a broader comedy on society in general so definitely think the demographic breakdown over its run won't be as low males as I was once expecting.
Definitely feels like this is going to be the box office run of the summer to watch. We knew Spider-verse was going to be big but Barbie has a potential $300M range of the high end and low end where it could theoretically end up.
