Post Cliffhanger 2 - Stallone is back

What can this really do? Of course, Cliffhanger is a masterpiece to me, but how loved is it as a 90s action classic to everyone else? I really wonder how this will be perceived, or in what form it will even take. I just can't see it being a Memorial Day theatrical wide release event film for some reason. Not with Stallone nearing 80 by the time it's released. And there's no way they can replicate the story of the first. It would need to be a film where the characters are the same but the story is wildly different - perhaps a survival film showing an older climber against the elements, such as Redford in All is Lost. They could get Janine Turner and Michael Rooker back, though sadly not Ralph Waite.

The first made $84 million but that was 30 years ago. I don't know, I struggle to see this even being made.

I think it's not a surprise that the success of Maverick has allowed this to get fast tracked. It see this doing totally well too, as long as it's good. Sly's age is not a factor I think, and it should probably work if it's a sequel that leans on the original yet has it's own new story, much like other nostalgic sequels. And now I really like Waugh as a director, but had they gotten a bigger/ more successful name I'd be even more excited. Still he has shown he's adapt at making quality action dramas so for now I have high hopes for this, just with the idea of it so far I think it can be a profitable hit.

Yeah. Waugh has done well recently with Greenland and Angel Has Fallen, and Butler's next, Kandahar. I trust him, although I will say Cliffhanger was a higher standard than those obviously because it didn't feature any CG action, which tends to cheapen things, so the sequel is going to feel different no matter (+ the 30 year gap).

Interestingly Waugh worked on Tango & Cash as a stunt man.

Anyway, it is ony being shopped around at the moment. It doesn't seem like a done thing yet. If nobody bites, it ain't getting off the ground.

I don't think it'll do much. doubt it'll top the first's $84m domestic haul. hopefully it's a good movie like the original

Could do something like Escape Plan or maybe the grey of really marketed well. The original will have bo impact on this. While it was a solid hit, it’s not iconic. I’d call it one of the better die hard clones like Under Siege or Air Force One. Best stunts for sure (I think the original was in Guinness for most expensive/ dangerous stunt)

I’d much rather a survival film like the grey then another terrorist film though. I’d love to see Stallone in a man vs nature type film

Their best bet imo is to pull in a lot of the Free Solo team and elite climbers today like Alex Honnold. Climbing is even more popular now than it probably was when the original film came out. There's the opp to make it more modern but if Sly tries keeping it too much like the original don't think it will do as well as pulling in some modern climbing producers would where there's already huge fanbases around supporting them.

Think they'd be better off just taking the name/concept and giving it to a new actor than tying in Stallone.

I kind of agree here. Either that or not doing the project at all. Stallone could play a father that gets one or two scenes, and his son has the action and adventure. But then they'd need to pick a son that is also a solid star, and not some Kellan Lutz-level actor. Someone like Statham or Brolin or Butler or Ruffalo. I just don't see the point, and you're not giving the film any chance at success, if you cast Glen Powell and Ed Skrein types.

But anyway, it's [currently] going ahead as a Stallone vehicle so they're limited with storyline otherwise they risk ridicule.

That opening scene is what made Cliffhanger so memorable, IMO. Not sure the rest of the film can be considered a 'classic.'

This seems more driven by Stallone than any market research study.
