 Re: Super Mario weekend
So even if Mario stays flat today and drops 40% on Sunday it still hits $200m. Wow.

 Re: Super Mario weekend
D&D will be at about 65m by Sunday. Ahead of The Lost City and Bullet Train through the same point. With no direct competition opening for a month hopefully it can crawl to 100-105m like those did. Still a bad rate of return, but 100m will at least look ok on paper

 Re: Super Mario weekend
I'm very curious about how this summer will be and if any other film will wildly surpass expectations. Think this is just an anomaly though lol but summer should be solid

The trends of the last year suggest that Spiderverse, The Flash, Indy, Dead Reckoning and Barbie will be the big winners of the summer while Guardians, Fast, Transformers and Elemental will struggle.

 Re: Super Mario weekend
I don't know. I think Transformers is in for a mini comeback. It already feels like a franchise that was given a slice of reality and has had to grovel and build it's way back up (which it kind of did with Bumblebee). Rise of the Beasts feels like a return to former glories. A gross in the Puss in Boots: The Last Wish region would signal this.

I'm going with the scenario as well of MCU and superhero disappointing and virtually everything else doing well. The Flash might be able to buck the trend just because it looks good.

Yeah Disney blew their load in 2019 and it's been downhill since. They got too cocky with their big franchises. Marvel is declining rapidly, they destroyed the Star Wars brand and there's no OG cast anymore to prop it up, Pixar no longer guarantees success, and they're running out of live-action animation adaptations to make. They do still have a lot of big cards to play though. Zootopia 2 for instance. We will know they're getting desperate if they start to make live-action adaptations of Pixar movies. Or a live-action Frozen.

 Re: Super Mario weekend
Guardian presales are so bad that at this point sub 100m is a possibility !!!

I think Guardians will pick up significantly closer to release. I still really want to see it. Just haven’t bought tickets yet

 Re: Super Mario weekend
https://deadline.com/2023/04/box-office ... 235318951/Quote: SATURDAY PM: “It’s still growing tonight” says one rival studio source who happens to be watching the non-stop booming late night ticket sales for Illumination/Universal’s Super Mario Bros Movie which clocked a $56M Saturday (+2% over Friday), for what is now a $146M 3-day, a massive $33,1K theater average, and a record 5-day of –wow– $204.2M per recent industry figures. That kicks Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen‘s $200M Wednesday-Sunday opening to second place among 5-day U.S./Canada records. Among Easter weekend openings, Super Mario Bros ranks third behind 2016’s Batman vs. Superman ($181M) and 2015’s Furious 7‘s $161M. If overseas is still at $173M by tomorrow AM, then the new global opening record for an animated movie set by Super Mario Bros stands at $377.2M.

 Re: Super Mario weekend
That GOTG3 weekend will tell us a lot about the state of the MCU franchise.
Doctor Strange 2 was lucky to have been released in 2022 vs 2023. It probably would have made $100m less now.

 Re: Super Mario weekend
Guardians will be fine, too early for pre sales to be any way accurate. Disney also has Avengers, Deadpool. 3 new SW films, Indy, Mermaid and Aladdin 2, any studio would kill for that lineup, and that is just a taste of the next 5 years. I’m sure they’ll have countless other films with 750ww+ films coming up.

 Re: Super Mario weekend
A really great start. Not only met the highest expectations for the movie, but it's also the best opening weekend for a film opening against a $100M opener since Tag made $14.95M in June 2018 against Incredibles 2! Nice to see counter-programming can still work.

Nice to see Air have a solid start. Hopefully bucks the 2023 trend and have string holds from here.

 Re: Super Mario weekend
If D&D plummets from here, it will get to 92m. Hopefully it can level off enough to get to 100m, though a sequel is a pipe dream at this point

 Re: Super Mario weekend
Little surprised no one posted the official Mario estimate yet.
They're estimating a -39% drop today, so it's definitely going up in the final numbers too - probably topping $150M for the weekend. It probably could have topped Incredibles 2's animation opening record with a normal Friday start w/Thursday previews, but honestly this is kind of more impressive, especially as a non-sequel.
