 John Wick Weekend
8.9m preview
Definitely hitting 70m. Could hit 80 but 90 looks unlikely unless it’s unexpectedly back loaded. Which I guess is possible due to the runtime

 Re: John Wick Weekend
Shazam $1,000,000 Thursday I'm not convinced this can do $10M+ in its second weekend. I'm also about as convinced this is above $1M as I was the OW was above $30M.

 Re: John Wick Weekend
In hindsight, the first Shazam! was just extremely fortunate to come out when superhero movies were still a licence to print money. It's proving now that Shazam isn't a $140 million-worthy character. He was just lucky.

So impressive how this franchise has consistently grown. You just don't see it happen anymore.

I'm struggling to think of any franchise that grew with every installment from first to fourth. Usually what happens is the first is massive and the second, third, and fourth aren't as big but are still very/quite successful.

 Re: John Wick Weekend
That's actually a great comparison. Phoenix had a 10.47% Thursday gross compared to its opening day. Shazam's $11.7M Friday to $1M Thursday gross is 8.55% in comparison. With an inflated OW there's a chance it could drop even worse than Dark Phoenix. If it played more like a family movie it has a chance though since they won't be watching John Wick but its decelerating very quickly. What looks certain is that even by the end of weekend 2 it's total gross will be below the 3 day OW of the original.

I was thinking original Rings trilogy and Austin Powers (probably the best comparison.) But they only had three each.

Hmm, yeah. So a few examples but certainly not the norm.

 Re: John Wick Weekend
... lol yeah Shazam should have just stuck with December. Maybe a week before Avatar and it still would've played through the holiday. Oh well.

 Re: John Wick Weekend
Or just pushed it back to mid April so it could at least keep its imax screens a bit longer.
Though I think Shazam's loss is all of our gain overall. Superhero fatigue is making all other genres, even long running franchises, seem fresh and we're seeing the results of that this month with Creed, Scream, Wick and likely Dragons overperforming.

 Re: John Wick Weekend
The only utility I see for Shazam was it kept the $30M+ streak alive. 4 OWs in one month above that level. I thought for sure 65 was going to be the low point of the month but its going to end up at a respectable gross given its budget and expectations were low on it.

The first Wick was 77th for its year domestically and behind stuff like Jersey Boys and The Judge.

 Re: John Wick Weekend
I can see JW4 true friday at 25m and saturday presales are excellent. So around 30m saturday is possible.
9/25/30/21 - 85m OW.

 Re: John Wick Weekend
Shazam has fallen about 91.5% from its opening day w/previews to Thursday, just about as bad as Quantumania. Is it going below $10M for the weekend?
Excellent start for Wick. Fingers crossed it can top $80M

That's argument enough to spark a Jersey Boys 2 Not only that, with a similar increase to JW2, 3 and 4 they should work on 3 sequels at one time and follow the Avatar model. This could be the next big franchise!

 Re: John Wick Weekend
Shazam may struggle to $65M. It just needs to beat $57.0M to have a better multiplier than Morbius. If Deadline's 3day estimate for a $9.05M weekend happens, even a 3X multiplier from here on out would lead to a total of $63.7M. The fact that Shazam may not even pass $60M and a 2X multiplier is an embarrassment that is going to be very difficult for any other movie to top in terms of flop factor. So in terms of being #1 at something, its #1 at being the possible worst box office run of the year! We're only at weekend 12 of 52 but it's just that bad.

29.4 for Friday, scream down 53%, ahead of Shazam which is down 80%
