 Re: New Years Week Numbers
He's just being sarcastic when he said 870M is the ceiling. But I'm pretty sure he's serious when he said 670M is the floor. He also estimates 2.2B-2.8B worldwide. And unlike domestic estimate, I think both 2.2B and 2.8B are serious projections.

 Re: New Years Week Numbers
Whitney biopic is a HUGE bomb, wow. It actually decreased this week.
This throws into question a lot of upcoming music biopics, especially and sadly for female artists, IMO. Apparently the Madonna biopic that was supposedly greenlit is back in development hell and I don't see it getting out of there for a while now. Will be interesting to see what happens with the Amy Winehouse biopic since she has a similar tragic story to Whitney.

 Re: New Years Week Numbers
Whitney's Monday was $300K higher than the estimate. It also has half the budget of Babylon so it's bad but not Babylon bad at least.

Incredible. Should have strong hold this weekend even with the holiday last weekend inflating things.

 Re: New Years Week Numbers
Great for Avatar. Should be at $510Mish or greater by the end of the weekend.
Needs a 6.68 multiplier if it pulls in a $37M weekend (still TBD) to catch up to TGM. With MLK weekend bump still not impossible but not necessarily probable. We may not know who wins 2022 until February President's Day weekend and Avatar may not get there until possibly March if its very close.

 Re: New Years Week Numbers
It also breaks the biggest non-holiday third weekday ever, and the longest consecutive double digit domestic daily box-office ever of 19 days, previous champions were the first Avatar, Star Wars TFA, and Spiderman NWH (17 days).

 Re: New Years Week Numbers
Puss In Boots 2 $3,289,440 -51% $70,320,480 14
That's great for Puss In Boots! Sing was at $6,145,400 at this same stage before making $3,610,650 on Wed so let's see how well Boots holds today. Could see Puss pull a 3rd weekend of $11M ish now which would be a solid hold for $85M total after 3 weekends (-35%).
To put things into perspective though, Puss' 14th day is still larger than its 1st ($3,200,250). That's how depressed it's first 5 days were from Christmas activities, storms, etc.

 Re: New Years Week Numbers
Despite opening to significantly more, Puss isn't that far off from Sing's dailies which has similar calendar dates.
Sing on Day 15 $3,610,650/$190,647,960, followed by a $20,712,365 3day weekend. It's total gross was 1.418 its 15 day total.
Puss on Day 15 made $2,279,245/$72,599,725. If it follows Sing's Wed to weekend ratio it will make $13.075M this weekend (-22.24%).
Puss opened to $12,429,515 while Sing opened to $35,258,145 so it's making up a lot of ground for having an OW nearly 1/3 of weekend 1 but 2/3 of Day 15.
Hypothetically if Puss falls that low it will also benefit from MLK weekend. Giving it an overly optimistic 5X multiplier from this weekend on if it makes $13.075M it's total gross would be about $140M which is a remarkable turnaround off of a $12.4M opening weekend (11.26X multiplier). May be overly optimistic but not impossible!
