 Weekend Actuals
...trickling in...
$13m PAW PATROL (I'm a bit disappointed after No. 1 openings in France and Germany)

 Re: Weekend Estimates
That's good enough for a Paw Patrol movie that feels like it's releasing way past it's time.

 Re: Weekend Estimates
Given how bad holds have been, in normal times Free Guy could have done sub 20%. With Labor Day, has a slim chance that its 4 day is higher than this 3 day. Very impressive for FG and Paw Patrol. I wonder how much Reminiscence would have made if it was a musical?

 Re: Weekend Estimates
Amazing hold for Free Guy. I guess the WoM is as good as you expect and the competition is slim. It also helps Free Guy is not available on streaming.

 Re: Weekend Estimates
Have to give credit to the director of Free Guy, Shawn Levy. He seems to have his dial on making big watercooler success films and television:
Producer: Stranger Things, Arrival
Director: Cheaper by the Dozen 1/2, Night At the Museum 1/2/3

 Re: Weekend Estimates
Either Free Guy is just a better movie than Suicide Squad in the minds of moviegoers or it was the HBO Max release strategy which hurt the latter.

 Re: Weekend Estimates
WB gotta be kicking them selves for no premium fee with these Day and date releases. Surely people would pay $15-$20 to lease them if they pay$30 on D+

 Re: Weekend Estimates
I haven't watched a Disney film upon release since Onward because of the premium fee. I just wait until they're available on home video and buy what I'm interested in then now. (I know Luca wasn't premium, but I still waited for the video release.) If HBO had a premium fee for their new movies, I wouldn't pay for them either unless it was $10 or less.
Disney seems to be having success with their premium service (more suitable for families), but I doubt I'm alone in not wanting to pay a monthly fee and a $30 premium to not even own the movie.

 Re: Weekend Estimates
I don't know why SS disappointing wasn't more expected. Harley Quinn's movie underwhelmed before the pandemic. The bar was already closer to the $80 M range pre-pandemic likely due to lukewarm reaction to #1.

 Re: Weekend Estimates
I think in regular times TSS would have had more hype, marketing seemed muted and the streaming option just seemed like the more optimal option right now.

I believe it's a mix of both in this case. Audience didn't want a reminder of Suicide Squad this soon thus most probably went to streaming specially with DC baggage. Free Guy is also light and fun which is helping to bring in frustrated audience and it helps that it has good reviews with Reynolds doing his usual shtick.

 Re: Weekend Estimates
Suicide Squad reminds me of things like Scott Pilgrim or Snakes On A Plane. Made to generate hype on the internet but not able to ever sell themselves to the mainstream.
