Re: Japan Box Office: Top 100 Grossing Films
Since the previous update: Demon Slayer: Mugen Train keeps padding its record-shattering total, on track to reach ¥40 billion likely near the end of the month. Evangelion: 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time jumps many more spots up to 66th, and has now become creator and director Hideaki Anno's highest grossing film ever, surpassing Shin Godzilla! It's in a position now where it won't be climbing too much higher, but it'll be aiming to gross over ¥8.5 billion, so should jump 2 or 3 more spots before ending its run. Since the previous update:
Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, again, continues to pad its unbelievable total as it continues its path to reach 29 million admissions before ending its run.
Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time enters the Top 100 in 98th. It will be aiming for a spot inside the Top 90 before finishing its run, but it's hard to say where exactly since there are five films tied for 88th place (taking the 88th-92nd spots) with 5.6 million admissions.

Re: Japan Box-Office: Golden Results; 2021 Charts Updated!
Biggest Thirtieth Weekends (1998-):
¥29,797,400 ($267,000), -20%, ¥24,724,356,100 ($233.9 million) - Your Name. (2016) ¥18,500,000 ($170,000), -39%, ¥39,917,984,500 ($381.5 million) - Demon Slayer: Mugen Train (2020) *est.*
And that's all again (will be until Spirited Away returns in Week 32 post-Oscar win/expansion run).
Demon Slayer's drop versus last week is also estimated since its 29th weekend gross wasn't released (I estimated about ¥30 million) due to the consecutive Golden Week holidays delaying reports all the way until Thursday (if holidays delay the reports until Wednesday, they're rarely released). Theaters are now closed in 6 prefectures (and have been extended until May 31st), too, so very impressive numbers recently with this disadvantage.
The IOC Vice-President recently said that nothing will stop the Olympics from being held as planned in July (now being thought to become the most watched program of all time due to zero spectators and Covid still keeping people indoors worldwide), so Japan and Tokyo will probably keep the strict measures in place until shortly before then.

Thank you for the data Corpse!
What would be your new forecasts for the final totals of the Conan and Rurouni Kenshin movies? I don't expect they'll still manage to generate much interest in June in the prefectures where theaters were closed, provided that the state of emergency is actually lifted.

I don't expect they'll still manage to generate much interest in June in the prefectures where theaters were closed, provided that the state of emergency is actually lifted. Detective Conan, I think, will be aiming for up to ¥8 billion. Following its first and second weekends, it was clearly on track to become the highest grossing film in the franchise and likely reach ¥10 billion to become the first ever annual franchise film to achieve uber-blockbuster status, but now with the SOEs being extended until May 31st, and the weakened numbers out of Golden Week (though still strong given the circumstances), it's not going to reach those milestones. Still, since it was definitely headed in that direction, the franchise is as strong (stronger) than ever and probably hasn't quite peaked yet. Next year's film, the 25th film and 25th Movie Anniversary release, is almost certain to clear ¥10 billion after seeing what this current film was doing prior to the SOEs, and during the SOEs. Rurouni Kenshin should clear ¥3 billion still and outgross the original film. It hasn't been hit particularly hard (fanbase-driven films/adult-targeted films aren't as affected by SOEs), and probably wouldn't have gone much higher than ¥4 billion or so anyway. The second part opening on June 4th, assuming all prefectures are open then as planned, will probably explode over its opening weekend by being the first big film post-SOEs in Tokyo/Osaka and the conclusion to the franchise. I still think it'll be aiming for ¥5 billion. I'll update their Daily Trackers later today.

And with theaters closed in Tokyo/Osaka, theaters in the rural prefectures continued to come in strong (relative to the usual location share) as I underestimated its admissions by 38,000 over Golden Week.

Even though I estimated what I believed was high all during Golden Week, I still underestimated quite a bit here as well. I'll be estimating even higher while the SOEs are in effect since it's causing the rural prefectures to account for a much, MUCH higher share than normal.

Re: Japan Box-Office: Golden Results; 2021 Charts Updated!
I went back and added when the SOEs (and where) went into effect for the Daily Trackers for the 3 films I'm tracking so we can see the impact they're having and make better comparisons.
It's the first time in 11 months that any theater(s) have been closed, so clearly noteworthy.

Yeah, I agree for Conan. Truly a shame as I do think it would have been the first in the franchise to cross 10B but losing golden week and playing under heavy restrictions for over a month is just too much. Hopefully next film can do that instead.

Corpse, the theatres in Fukuoka and Aichi haven't been closed as of yet, I think they will be closed from this Wednesday onwards.

Hopefully next film can do that instead. It's still doing very well. It was outpacing its predecessors even after the SOEs went into effect for awhile and was on track to become the highest grossing in the series, so there's clearly still room for growth within the long-running franchise. Plus, it'll still become the third highest grossing film of the 24-film franchise, which I think any distributor will happily accept. And since this one was very likely going to reach ¥10 billion based on its numbers in its first two weeks, I have little doubt the 25th film (25th Anniversary release) will do it next year.

I'll move that announcement to this Wednesday on the Daily Trackers. I'll keep it as May 7th on the timeline I updated above as Friday was on par/below Thursday, so the announcement likely had a small impact starting there given Friday should have come in a bit higher.

Rengoku's birthday.
It would have been even stronger (a lot stronger) as there was a giveaway planned for today, but they cancelled it due to the SOEs.

Re: Japan Box-Office: Golden Results; 2021 Charts Updated!
Went ahead and updated Demon Slayer with its estimated Monday since it was Rengoku's Birthday, and fans came out quite strong for the character's special day. The preliminary reported (rounded) total of ¥39.92 billion / 28.90 million admissions as of Sunday basically matched the estimated total, so it shouldn't change much once the actuals are released later today.
Monday was being planned as a special event with a giveaway and everything, but those plans had to be scrapped due to the SOEs in effect. Still, it was a strong day about on par with an actual holiday despite it being a regular work/school day.
I'll update the Daily Trackers for Detective Conan and Rurouni Kenshin after the actuals come in later today.
