Well, I Heart Huckabees didn't really expand the way Kung Fu Hustle is, and also, it wasn't incredibly well-recieved either.
Kung Fu Hustle stayed in 7 theaters for two weeks, holding on strong to it's PTA. Now, it's expanding to 2,300 theaters.

Here we go: The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
It had a two-day wide weekend, so I don't know how that would affect the PTA. It would probably be around $5,500. So that's a 88.9% PTA decline.

Okay, fine. Assume that it's PTA drops 90%, that's an $8.1M weekend ($3,500 PTA). Like you said, a 90% decline in the PTA would be unlikely, so if it does an 85% drop in the PTA, that's a $12.2M weekend ($5,300 PTA).

This is a very odd case. A PTA drop between 85-90% results in very different weekend numbers. I will find a good example.

The Lion King
98% PTA drop. $793,000 PTA to $16,000. Was in 2 theaters then greatly expanded. Still not the best example, but proof that there can be a 90+% PTA drop.

Yeah, but still not the best comparison for Kung Fu Hustle.

Could get interesting! Been over to rt and Interpreter dropped to 69% positive. Hustle is still at 87. Have they set the stheatre count yet for either of them?
I still think Interpreter will do much better, but I checked it might not open to 20 million. Does this mean AMityville is going to really be in it for top three still?
Eh, this is going to be an odd weekend with no real big leader, anyone could surprise. I have it now as:
Interpreter - 17 million
Hustle - 11 million
Amityville - 10 million
But these are all so close, one never knows. I'd have a much better feel for this movie if it had pushed even 5 more theatres last week. I can just never read BO for the two cities its playing in now. Maybe it could even go to 13 million, but it could also top off at 8. Still, 8 million for an import is pretty damn good.
Great thread xia, this is going to be interesting to track if it doesn't bomb this weekend.

I'm not sure if it is going to hit $10 million. It seems to be more of an "internet hype" type film, and definately appeals strongly to the indie crowd. Being that it is subtitled, I don't expect it to have a huge draw. Perhaps opening day, but I see its weekend multiplier being quite low once word starts spreading that it is indeed subtitled.
My Predictions:
The Interpreter -- $23 million
The Amittyville Horror -- $9.5 million
Kung Fu Hustle -- $7.0 million

Not yet. We may get some information from BOG by tomorrow morning. Otherwise, BOM will update all the counts in the afternoon.

The Information from Guru just came in
The Interpreter - 2,758 theaters - $21M.
A Lot Like Love - about 2,400 theaters - $11M.
Kung Fu Hustle - about 2,300 theaters - $9M.
King's Ransom- about 1,500 theaters - $6M.
So only Interpreter has an actual number.

The Interpreter has a solid theater count. That's right about where The Manchurian Candidate was.

It's not the material I'm comparing, it's its theater pattern. Lion King went from 2 theaters to over 2500 theaters in its 3rd or 2nd weekend. Kung Fu Hustle is doing the same, except with 7 theaters to start with.

To be honest, both films don't compare each other the theater pattern. What if Lion King has way stronger TC legs THAN KFH in weeks?

The Lion King also went on to become the second highest grossing animated movie ever (the first at that time).
Kung-Fu Hustle isn't easily comparible to The Lion King, even if their release pattern is a bit similar.

You don't get it. I'm only comparing the PTA. The comparison has nothing to do with its future weekends. I was just trying to find movies that jumped 2400+ theaters after a 2-5 theater small run.

Ah, but you're forgetting that this was in that only Disney theater that sells tickets for over 25 bucks each and always sells out every show. Those movies playing there always have HUGE theater averages, so no, it's not a good comparison.

OK, FINE! Forget that comparison! I still think Kung Fu Hustle won't make over 7 million for this weekend.

The tracking hasn't picked up entering Friday, so I have to agree that it isn't going to be a huge hit by the normal standard, although it will still be impressive for a foreign film. Final prediction:
Opening: 10.5M
Total: 37M
