72. You'll Be in My Heart (Tarzan, 1999)

Sung by Kala and Offscreen voice
Performed by Glenn Close and Phil Collins
Music and Lyrics by Phil Collins
Winner of the 2000 Best Original Song Oscar

Best Lyric: Kala: Come stop your crying, it will be alright. Just take my hand, and hold it tight.

Tarzan is a film whose soundtrack most like much more than I do.. Part of it is I resent it for having songs sung by an offscreen voice rather than the cha racters themselves. This one gets extra props because it does start out with Kala singing to Tarzan, and I initially thought this would be the only song from Tarzan on this list, but then I realized I liked another one of them so much I would have to include one of the songs where just Phil Collins sings. That one will be coming up later. Back to this song, it really is a heartwarming sequence as Kala comforts the new baby Tarzan, who has no one in this world besides her. It think the whole song is relatable because many of us feel alone all the time, but then we remember that we all have someone somewhere who loves us, and we'll always be in their heart.

71. True Love's Kiss (Enchanted, 2007)

Sung by Giselle, Edward and the Forest Animals
Performed by Amy Adams, James Marsden and Enchanted Cast
Music by Alan Menken Lyrics by Stephen Schwartz

Best Lyric: Edward: You're the fairest maid I've ever met. You were made... Gisele: To finish your duet.

Enchanted is a well liked film with a couple of well remembered tunes, but for some reason, this song, the film's main theme, is not. It was the only song from the film not nominated for the Best Original Song Oscar (I don't consider the Carrie Underwood song actually in the film), which is amazing considering how much better it is than "So Close". The tune really has that classic Disney feel, and despite its cliches (which are of course, intentional), it really has a magical, warm feeling to it. The lyrics are clever in that they are so very obvious as almost to be funny. Really, this one should be remembered more than it is.

70. Second Star to the Right (Peter Pan, 1953)

Performed by The Jud Conlon Chorus and The Mellomen.
Music by Sammy Fain Lyrics by Sammy Cahn

Best Lyric: And if it's Never Land you need, its light will lead you there

Almost every film from Disney's Golden age has a theme that plays over the opening credits, but almost every one of them has been forgotten. Can you remember the songem to Peter that played over the credits to Snow White? Alice in Wonderland? Cinderella? But everyone remembers the the them to Peter Pan. The song really gets the viewer in the mood for a fantastical journey to Neverland, there is not a mention of the terrible pirates that live there or how lonely i is to be a kid forever without parents. It only focuses on the good things, and really sets up the film's emotional beats to be all the more upsetting (even if the pirates are goofy rather than scary).

69. Baby Mine (Dumbo, 1941)

Performed by Betty Noyes
Music by Frank Churchill Lyrics by Ned Washington
Nominated for the 1942 Best Original Song Oscar (Lost to "The Last Time I Saw Paris" from Lady Be Good)

Best Lyric: You are so precious to me, sweet as can be, baby of mine

I've only seen Dumbo once, but this song had such an impact on me, I remember it vividly. It so very honestly captures the parent child relationship (how one should be, anyway) where the love is unconditional and no matter what everyone else thinks, your mom will always love you. I doubt anyone can watch this scene and not want to call their mother and tell her thy love her. The tune is just so sweet and somber, and the repeated use of the word "Mine" really conveys the special bond between a mother and the child that is hers. Just beautiful

68. I Wanna Be Like You (The Jungle Book, 1967)

Sung by King Louis, Baloo and the Monkeys
Performed by Louis Prima, Phil Harris, and The Jungle Book Cast
Music by Robert B. Sherman Lyrics by Richard M. Sherman

Best Lyric: King Louis: Give me the power of man's red flower so I can be like you!

This is my favorite song from The Jungle Book. I liked it so much I sang the Smash Mouth cover for my 4th grade talent show. The song is just so fun and infectious, and really develops King Louis as a hateable creep. It is obvious that he is a villain only after the song is over. The sequence where Bagheera and Baloo have to rescue him is very funny, Bagheera posing as the statue makes me laugh out loud. Really, what makes this song is the style. I may be wrong, but I don't think any other Disney song has scatting in it. Unfortunately it seems the jazzy type of music only worked once for Disney, because the films that also tried it in the era (The Aristocats, Robin Hood) did not have near the staying power.

67. I'm Late (Alice in Wonderland, 1951)

Sung by The White Rabbit
Performed by Bill Thompson
Music by Sammy Fain Lyrics by Bob Hillard

Best Lyric: I'm overdue! I'm really in a stew!

I have not looked up the run time of every song on this list, but this is probably the shortest one. I's not melodically rich; it's honestly very simple and probably doesn't deserve to rank so high. But the song is so relatable and easy to sing when you are in a rush. I know when I was little, me and my brother would run around, pretending to be late for things singing this song. It's probably really just my preference, but I've always thought this song was genius in its simplicity and its real life application. Good job, Disney!

66. Oo-De-Lally (Robin Hood, 1973)

Sung by Alan A-Dale
Performed by Roger Miller
Music and Lyrics by Roger Miller

Best Lyric: Reminiscin', this-'n'-thattin', havin' such a good time. Oo-de-lally, oo-de-lally, golly, what a day.

I'd only seen Robin Hood once and thought it was lame, so I'd never revisited it until I saw this commercial.

I thought the song was familiar, and I found out it was from Robin Hood. I was very surpriied, as I remembered all of the songs from the film having sucked and been forgettable. But this one is very bouncy and fun. It's really something I'd like to walk through the forest to. And there's something about nonsense lyrics in a song that makes it more fun. This would be Disney's last classic song until the Little Mermaid (say what you will about The Fox and the Hound, I think its music is lame). It's a shame such a fun song is trapped in such a lifeless film for anyone over the age of five.

65. Fathoms Below (The Little Mermaid, 1989)

Sung by Sailors
Performed by Ship's Chorus
Music by Alan Menken Lyrics by Howard Ashman

Best Lyric: Where Triton is king and his merpeople sing in mysterious fathoms below.

This song is the perfect intro to The Little Mermaid. It sets the tone perfectly, even if it's deleted verse foreshadowing the struggle with Ursula was put on the cutting room floor. This strategy of having a musical number introduce the tone off the film before introducing its main characters was emulated in Frozen with the number "Frozen Heart", but it was not nearly as successful. "Fathoms Below can only be described as a sea shanty type of number, which are memorable by nature. This is the song that started the Disney Renaissance, and it did it in a spectacular fashion.

64. The Unbirthday Song (Alice in Wonderland, 1951)

Sung by The Mad Hatter, the March Hare, Alice and the Dormouse.
Performed by Ed Wynn, Jerry Colonna, Kathryn Beaumont and Jimmy MacDonald
Music and Lyrics by Mack David, Al Hoffman and Jerry Livingston

Best Lyric: March Hare: Let's all congratulate us with another cup of tea. A very merry unbirthday to you!.

The Unbirthday Song is probably one of the funniest songs in any Disney movie. Sure it comes directly from Lewis Carroll's original novels, but the execution of this scene in particular is a real highlight of the film. The Mad Hatter and the March Hare just pop off the screen with personality in this number, and the whole thing is so ridiculous as to almost make sense. Why not celebrate your Unbirthday. "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Bat" sung by the Dormouse at the conclusion of the number, is another cool callback to the original novel. Really just a clever and fun song that you can sing to make yourself feel better on 364 days out of the year.

63. You Can Fly! You Can Fly! You Can Fly! (Peter Pan, 1953)

Performed by The Jud Conlon Chorus and The Mellomen.
Music by Sammy CahnL Lyrics by Sammy Fain

Best Lyric: Think of all the joy you'll find when you leave the world behind and bid your cares goodbye.

"You Can Fly! You Can Fly! You Can Fly!" is another Disney song that really captures the feeling of the moment of the film that it accompanies. It is many kids' dream to be able to fly, and the feeling that these kids have when they discover that they are able to is one of complete awe and wonder, and that's exactly what this gorgeous song communicates as well. If you weren't excited to go to Neverland before, you certainly are now. This is probably the best song that the Jud Conlon Chorus and the Mellomen sing in any Disney movie (and they sing in a lot!)

62. Under the Sea (The Little Mermaid, 1989)

Sung by Sebastian and the Undersea Band
Performed by Samuel Wright and The Little Mermaid Cast
Music by Alan Menken Lyrics by Howard Ashman
Winner of the 1990 Best Original Song Oscar

Best Lyric: The smelt and the sprat, they know where it's at, and oh that blowfish blow!

"Under the Sea" and "Part of Your World" were the two songs from The Little Mermaid that I listened to over and over as a kid. I liked this better at one point probably, but more recently I've believed that "Part of Your World" is far better. Not that "Under the Sea" isn't great. It probably has one of the most memorable melodies in any disney movie and Samuel Wright sings the hell out of it. But more so than any other song in the film, this one stops the action instead of moving it forward and feels more like an excuse to add another musical number, however great said musical number is. Also, it doesn't have as dynamic a range of notes as more complex Disney songs have. "Under the Sea" is like marshmallows or cotton candy, sweet without much substance.

61. Chim Chim Cheree (Mary Poppins, 1964)

Sung by Bert, Jane, Michael and Mary Poppins
Performed by Dick Van Dyke, Karen Dotrice, Matthew Garber and Julie Andrews
Music by Robert B. Sherman Lyrics by Richard M. Sherman
Winner of the 1965 Best Original Song Oscar

Best Lyric: Mary and Bert: Chim chiminey, chim chiminey, chim chim cheree! When you're with a sweep you're in glad company.

"Chim Chim Cheree" is a great song from Mary Poppins. It is fun on a level, but it also has a sort of dark and foreboding feel to it which I can't quite place. It's not the best song in the movie though, and it did not deserve the Oscar. Here, the repetitive nonsense lyrics aren't as endearing when you have so many other clever songs in the film. Plus, I really find the character of Bert annoying (I hate Step in Time) so it's hard to rank this over other songs in the film. But we;re at he point in the list where every song truly is great, and this is no exception.

60. The Work Song (Cinderella, 1950)

Sung by Jacques, Gus, and the Mice
Performed by Jimmy MacDonald and Cinderella Cast
Music and Lyrics by Mack David, Jerry Livingston and Al Hoffman

Best Lyric: Girl Mouse: Leave the sewing to the women, you go get some trimmin'.

The mice in Cinderella are so cute, and ther song matches this cuteness. The high mouselike voices were likely still a mystery to audiences as to how it was done at this point, so that probably gave this number an extra element of wonder. The song is catchy sure, but it really is just touching and sad that the mice are such good friends to her when she has no real human friends; the only humans she knows abuse her to no end. The viewer is so happy and really believes that she will be able to go to the ball at the end of the song. If only that were true.

59. Strangers Like Me (Tarzan, 1999)

Performed by Phil Collins
Music and Lyrics by Phil collins

Best Lyric: I wanna know. Can you show me? I wanna know about these strangers like me.

I said I was not a fan of Tarzan's decision to not have the characters sing the songs in the film. I still stand by that, but this song is such a jam that I don't care who sings it. Really it is just so passionate and captures the internal feelings of Tarzan so well. It's almost Tarzan's "I Want" song; I'm not sure if it counts since the words do not come out of his mouth. Not that it matters, because the song is just so great anyway. I wish this had won the Oscar instead of "You'll Be in My Heart", but that's a great song too. Really just an embarrassment of riches for Disney at this point in terms of their song catalogue.

58. Go the Distance (Hercules, 1997)

Sung by Hercules
Performed by Roger Bart
Music by Alan Menken Lyrics by David Zippel
Nominated for the 1998 Best Original Song Oscar (Lost to My Heart will Go On)

Best Lyric: I will please the gods, I can go the distance!

Another "I want" song. This time for Hercules. It's this song and "Out There" from Hunchback that make me hate my own voice for not being able to sing as well. Really, this has always been one of my favorite songs. I even sang it for the audition for when I played Princeton in Avenue Q School Edition. But on closer analysis, it can't be ranked much higher than this, because of its sappy, melodramatic lyrics. It's so sentimental and sweet, my teeth hurt listening to them, and it really lacks the bite that Howard Ashman gave the songs of the early Renaissance, and even Stephen Schwartz's lyrics for the previous two films far outstripped these one by Zippel. Of course, lyrics are only part of the song, and far from being as important as the melody, but this song is a bit too cliched in its message and purpose despite a strong melody.

57. Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride (Lilo and Stitch, 2002)

Performed by Mark Kealiʻi Hoʻomalu, The Kamehameha Schools Children's Chorus
Music and Lyrics by Mark Kealiʻi Hoʻomalu and Alan Silvestri

Best Lyric: Lingering in the ocean blue, and If I had one wish come true, I'd surf till the sun sets
beyond the horizon.

I really like the songs from Lilo and Stitch. They are not super popular, but they capture the film's essence and setting perfectly. Who wouldn't listen to this song and want to fly out immediately to Hawaii? It's also nice that the lyrics are in English and it actually can be sung along to. The singer and the kid's chorus together sounds great, and the lyrics that assimilate surfing to a Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride are creative, and create a truly irresistible combination. For some reason, the fact that none of the songs in this film are sung by the characters doesn't bother me as much as it does in Tarzan. Maybe I just really like this style? But whatever, this song deserves more listens.

56. The Siamese Cat Song (Lady and the Tramp, 1955)

Sung by Si and Am
Performed by Peggy Lee
Music and Lyrics by Peggy Lee and Sonny Burke

Best Lyric: We are former residents of Siam. There are no finer cat than I am

Wow, if there ever was a song that made you hate a character, it is this one. Si and Am are not in Lady and the Tramp much, but this song made them seem so awful they are still widely considered some of the best Disney villains. The lyrics are genius in their simplicity, and the Asian music playing in the background gives the number a really unique feel. A pet trashing the apartment so that the other pet gets blamed is really shitty, and part of why Max from The Secret Life of Pets completely fails as a main character. Si and Am succeed as villains though, certainly. And the song may be racist, but I still like it.
