Adjusting pre-2000 movies is pretty useless.

It is purely an inflation-based adjustment, but inflation is not the only difference in comparing different eras of cinema attendance. The whole point of doing it is so people can find out in the peace of their own mind that if a film was released today it would make such and such amount, but that's all bullshit, and not what would happen. There are economic and technological factors to not only consider but that are inescapable when calculating such an estimation, thus rendering them all void.

Yes, inescapable economic and technological factors such as 3D and Imax premiums on current films.

Number of tickets sold is the only universal comparator, and even though adjusted box office doesn't account for today's premium formats, it gives the best glimpse available into the decline in popularity of theatrical films.

The people who are seeking the "peace of their own mind", are those who attempt to deny the validity of adjusted box office, and pretend that todays's big numbers actually mean something.

1963's Cleopatra made $581 million (adjusted), mind you it's production/marketing budget was $448 million (adjusted).

I'm surprised that The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor made $115m adjusted. For 2nd sequel released 7 years later and with very poor reviews it feels like a huge haul. (It also had an adjusted budget of $162m though, but with a $400m (non-inflated) worldwide total it did just fine.) Well, no wonder they're releasing another Mummy film in 2017.

Vanilla Sky adjusts to $151 million. I remember that it scored a D+ CinemaScore. The fact that it still made this much is such a testament to Cruise's drawing power 15 years ago.

The very same film would make $50 million tops nowadays.

Early 2000s were a great time to enjoy movies.

Night at the Museum's non adjusted gross is pretty amazing. Though being the only major holiday family movie probably helped it massively

Yeah, it definitely felt like it became a huge hit pretty much by default.

I remember how insane its opening weekend was at the time.

And then its 2nd weekend hold was doubly so.

it's obvious why it was a hit.

Jim Carrey starring who was huge at the time, based on popular story, Christmas themed movie with holiday release date = money making machine

Cliffhanger adjusts to $175m.

Only five R-rated movies have exceeded that level in the last five years: 21 Jump Street, Deadpool, The Revenant, Ted, and American Sniper.

yeah but why you mention that one specifically? In the 90s plenty of R rated movies did better than that one

The landscape for R-rated films has changed so dramatically since the '90s that it hardly feels surprising that few R-rated films have been that big in recent years.

On that note, I was watching Jerry Maguire while flying yesterday, and it occurred to me that it adjusts to nearly $300 million now (BOM puts it at 292). I just can't imagine a star-driven R-rated dramedy making half that number now.

Because it's Stallone (I'm a fan), and it surprised at the time after Stallone coming off a four-year flop streak (Rocky V, Oscar, and Stop! or My Mom will Shoot). And looking back, I bet people forget Cliffhanger. Just thought I'd mention it.

Hercules and The Hunchback of Notre Dame adjust to like 180 each. That would hardly be considered horrible nowadays, no?

It's ok. Considering they're both big Disney films, it's not great, especially with 20 years of inflation.
