 Re: Holy adjusted gross shit!
How about Kindergarten Cop, that made adjusted 180mil!! Arnie's drawing power then, wow. It just looks laughable in comparison, to what's left of that now. I noticed most of his films where made for "nothing" then as well. Twins and Kindergarten cop only seemed to have cost 15mil to produce at the time.

 Re: Holy adjusted gross shit!
Two weeks from now a little movie called HOME ALONE will celebrate its 25th birthday...
It did $286m and adjusts to $569m - much more than Chris Columbus' first HARRY POTTER movie ($318m/$471m)...

 Re: Holy adjusted gross shit!
Yeah Home Alone was a phenomenon. A perfect four quadrant Christmas movie that was released amid Gulf War tensions. It was the perfect escapism.
I recall it surpassed Beverly Hills Cop as highest grossing comedy at the time.

It is mind-blowing that it got up to #3 all-time (behind only E.T. and SW) at the time.

Forrest Gump- 650 million.
Good luck with that today. It'd be lucky to make 50 million

You have to adjust not only the numbers when looking at grosses from 20 years ago.

Jerry Maguire adjusts to $283 million. Even with all the Oscar noms and a huge star in the lead, it is hard to imagine a film like this grossing almost $300 million nowadays!

 Re: Holy adjusted gross shit!
It's a shame.
It was huge back then with Cruise at his peak (he ever reached the 1996 heights again), a successful soundtrack and full of film quotes that mad it a pop culture phenomenon. It also helped that it didnt have any major competition that Chrirtmas apart from Michael and Beavus and Butthead do Anerica lol

You know, maybe I am off on this, but I think people just used to be more into romantic stories than they are now.

 Re: Holy adjusted gross shit!
Nah, the studios just stopped producing them. I'm sure a quality RomCom could do gangbuster business today as well...

 Re: Holy adjusted gross shit!
Why would studios stop producting something that promises money for no good reason?

 Re: Holy adjusted gross shit!
I mean studios did produce Silver Linings Playbook, Trainwreck, Crazy, Stupid, Love. All terrific terrific romcoms and they all did pretty well. But not exactly the gangbusters type of business you are talking about.

 Re: Holy adjusted gross shit!
90s was a golden age for RomCom indeed, with films like Pretty Woman and Sleepless in Seattle. Maybe the stories got jaded and became less interesting after all those classics, or maybe stars no longer give people the same vibe or chemistry any more? Don't know. We are also in an age where studios care more about opening weekends, so even for RomCom, they mainly focus on VD weekend instead to get the maximum initial demands instead of having a $15m opening with a 10x multiplier that good romantic comedies are known for.

 Re: Holy adjusted gross shit!
Also, The Proposal was a romcom, where pretty much EVERYTGHING went right and it did terrific business, probably scratching the ceiling of what is possible nowadays.
But not quite the adjusted heights of Sleepless in Seattle ($255 million), Runaway Bride ($250 million), My Best Friend's Wedding ($231 million), You've Got Mail ($199 million)...
I do firmly believe that the tastes have changed.

 Re: Holy adjusted gross shit!
Also, I don't think we ever got someone to really follow into the footsteps of Sandra Bullock, Julia Roberts and Meg Ryan. Though some big stars might occasionally do a romcom nowadays, it seems like they will quickly gravitate towards edgier roles once they break out and won't stick with a tried formula.

 Re: Holy adjusted gross shit!
Well, younger girls are now more into Twilight and YA adaptations, while older females are more into R-rated ones like Sex in the City and 50 Shades, so that middle ground is gradually disappearing.

 Re: Holy adjusted gross shit!
There's alot more vulgarity in today's rom coms or just "coms". It just doesn't translate to the same widespread appeal where mothers and teen daughters can go watch them together or the elderly for that matter who formed a big part of the rom com audience.

 Re: Holy adjusted gross shit!
But I don't think a traditional romcom retread akin to My Best Friend's Wedding would do $200+ million nowadays either.

 Re: Holy adjusted gross shit!
There is also no Meg Ryan any more to give that sweet every-day girl vibe without being corny. Witherspoon had that potential after Legally Blond and Sweet Home Alabama, but she has challenged herself in more dramatic roles since, and thus the result when she did comedy has been inconsistent. Four Christmases showed given the right situation, she can still deliver the box office though.

 Re: Holy adjusted gross shit!
Exactly, that's what I mean. Some actresses do have the potential, but they usually decide to go for edgier and more demanding roles. Same for actors too, see Matthew McConaughey.

 Re: Holy adjusted gross shit!
About Time should have made $200m if those are the standard of what were blockbusters.
But since we're this side of the millennium, it made like $30m.

Did you see About Time BK? Its no where close to the highly appealing premises of straight-up romantic movies that are being talked here.
