 Re: China Box Office
Nice. So San Andreas won't benefit from this at all. LOL...oh, China, you are just the worst. You hate other countries so much but copy everything the US does.

 Re: China Box Office
June 1st was Doraemon's biggest day yet, and now it's at $51m after 5 days. Pretty crazy.
San Andreas looks fine the opening day.

Not bad for a Tuesday. I think San Andreas really could reach my lofty expectation.

 Re: China Box Office
$5.2m OD is just ok at best. It won't reach even $40m in China I believe unless the WoM is great there.

 Re: China Box Office
I haven't seen one poster for it anywhere. No bus wrap. No subway poster. Nothing. $5.2m is pretty good for a film that isn't being advertised anywhere ... and on a Tuesday (which is discount day)!

 Re: China Box Office
It's not at all frontloaded though, with minimal midnight and another $5m on the way today. Could be looking at $35m for the week (6-day).

 Re: China Box Office
Yeah, that's nice. But unfortunately it will only have 8 days free before Jurassic World arrives. So I think my $125m hope is dead. Still it will most likely make $60m+ in China, which is just great.

A slight increase from OD is good for SA.

48.44m yuan on Friday ($7.75m). On pace for a $30m weekend and $45m+ for the first 6 days.
The pre-sale for Jurassic ls looking strong as expected.

 Re: China Box Office
Ok, so CHAPPiE is being advertised on the tube now. A bit fucking late, I was thinking. Then I saw that the advertiser is one of the biggest video-streaming websites in China, so that kind of solves my confusion. Within a few weeks, all films in China go to The Internet. There is no rental or home video sales. It's cinema, then free streaming. Start to finish in two moves.

 Re: China Box Office
San Andreas' Monday was actually on par with its opening day (Tuesday). It has shown great legs that will unfortunately get cut short by JW on Wednesday.

 Re: China Box Office
Early estimate put midnight gross for Jurassic World at 13.54m yuan, or $2.2m. For comparison, Avengers 2 made 29.68m yuan at midnight.

The midnight ended up revising down to 8.39m yuan. Look like the rest got rolled into Wednesday gross.

 Re: China Box Office
Jurassic World has banners on the subway. Didn't see anything remotely so for San Andreas.

 Re: China Box Office
An early 8.2 score on douban, the Chinese equivalent of IMDb, so look like the WOM will be pretty good.

 Re: China Box Office
It's only early, and people are more likely to grade high in China because of the VIP mentality of seeing it first. Overriding that is the fact that Chinese people are pretty much wowed by US blockbusters, especially something as unique as dinosaurs. So a positive score is expected and, at least in my opinion, has no bearing on its quality.

Look like just over 100m yuan for the opening day, or about $17m.

Not gigantic comparing to say Avengers 2, which had 185.5m yuan on its opening Tuesday, or of course Furious 7, but still fine on its own. Iron Man 3 opened to a similar 109.2m on a Wednesday and finished with 755m ($120m). With better WOM and better summer weekdays help (high school students just finished their college entrance exams), JW could challenge $150m.

 Re: China Box Office
From BoxOffice.com They have comprehensive coverage of China box office... Quote: May 2015 Box Office Stats
China's box office receipts for May 2015 hit ¥3.178 billion ($512.08 million), an increase of 42.86% over May 2014 thanks in large part to the dominance of Avengers: Age of Ultron which contributed ¥1.409 billion ($227 million). There were also 4.26 million screenings (+33.33%) and 86.19 million admissions (+36.19%) during May. Domestic films accounted for ¥805 million ($129.69 million) while imported films earned ¥2.372 billion ($382.16 million) for a 3:1 split in favor of foreign films.
2015 YTD Box Office Stats
The 2015 yearly box office total through May 31 stands at ¥16.867 billion ($2.72 billion), 56.7% ahead of 2014 at the same date. There have been 20.72 million screenings (+34.54%) and 465.01 million admissions (+52.47%). Domestic films have earned ¥8.512 billion ($1.38 billion) and imported films have grossed ¥8.305 billion ($1.34 billion), an almost even split five months through 2015.
A Look Ahead
The first half of June has once again been dominated by imported films (San Andreas, Jurassic World, Stand By Me Doraemon), but late June will see the arrival of several domestic pics with huge box office potential (SPL2: A Time For Consequences, The Ark of Mr. Chow, and Hollywood Adventures) and July is the industry's unofficial protection month with no scheduled foreign releases.
May's top ten films are shown below with data from China's EntGroup.
