It's still aiming for ¥3.65-3.70 billion, and it shouldn't diverge from that range.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: The Boy and the Beast Receiving Oscar
FUNimation Entertainment Licenses Hosoda's "The Boy and the Beast" Film

Entertainment news source Variety reports that FUNimation Entertainment has acquired the U.S. rights to Mamoru Hosoda's upcoming film The Boy and The Beast'. The film will open in select theaters in late 2015 and nationwide in early 2016.

Theatrical screenings have already been set for France, and the major French movie studio Gaumont will handle international sales outside Asia. Funimation is working with Gaumont International to release the film.

Funimation executive vice president and chief operating officer Mike DuBoise stated, "We're confident that critics and moviegoers will quickly agree that this is an Oscar-worthy film."

“We’re excited to bring ‘The Boy and the Beast’ to audiences across the United States,” said Funimation CEO and founder Gen Fukunaga. “Mamoru Hosoda is a masterful director and has made Japanese animated films accessible to everyone.”

The story of the film is set in the human realm (Tokyo's Shibuya ward) and the bakemono realm ("Jūtengai"). In these two worlds which must not intersect, there lives a lonely boy and a lonely bakemono. One day, the boy gets lost in the bakemono world, becomes the disciple of the bakemono Kumatetsu, and is renamed Kyūta.

“The Boy and the Beast” hits theaters in Japan on July 11th.

>Nice counts for both Tomorrowland and Prophecy. Neither are expected to do too well (June is one of the worst months every year), but hopefully they open above ¥200 million and possibly make a run at ¥300 million over the weekend. Pre-sales aren't suggesting they'll come close to the latter goal, though.

>The Hunger Games: Mockingjay (Part 1) will probably barely debut in the Top 10 (8th/9th). Unlike, I believe, everywhere else in the world, all of the imported YA films bomb/disappoint in Japan, but the The Hunger Games franchise is the worst of all. It wasn't until just a couple months ago that Kadokawa picked Mockingjay (Part 1) up for release.

The first Hunger Games debuted in 4th before falling out of the top 10 in just its second week, and Catching Fire barely made the Top 10 with a debut in 10th (down over 50% from the first film).

>All of the holdovers suffer some significant seating/showtime loss due to four wide openers, two going quite wide. Cinderella, in particular, is experiencing its first significant seating/showtime cut this weekend.

DBZ still has a wide release going into it's 8th weekend? The last movie lost 90% of it's theatres after the 6th weekend.

This is the first week it's losing theaters, but it's not very many.

I don't know why the last one lost so many theaters after Golden Week, but it's very unusual. Most films maintain their opening week theater count until around week 8 or 9 (depending on their performance, not new releases).

How many theatres is it in at the moment? Maybe they figures there wasn't much more money to be had with Battle of Gods after it had already had the Golden Week holiday.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Forecast (06/06-07)
The yen is nearing a 17-year low versus the dollar, so don't expect any impressive USD totals this summer! All the yen and admission figures this year have been great and should continue throughout the summer, though.

Weekend Forecast (06/06-07)

Image

01 (--) ¥310 million ($2.5 million), 0, ¥310 million ($2.5 million), Tomorrowland (Disney) NEW
02 (--) ¥220 million ($1.7 million), 0, ¥220 million ($1.7 million), Prophecy (Toho) NEW

03 (01) ¥154 million ($1.2 million), -39%, ¥640 million ($5.2 million), Shinjuku Swan (Sony) Week 2
04 (02) ¥133 million ($1.1 million), -32%, ¥5.26 billion ($43.2 million), Cinderella (Disney) Week 7
05 (03) ¥119 million ($910,000), -30%, ¥870 million ($7.1 million), Initiation Love (Toho) Week 3
06 (04) ¥112 million ($890,000), -26%, ¥2.41 billion ($19.6 million), Biri Gal (Toho) Week 6
07 (05) ¥62 million ($490,000), -40%, ¥550 million ($4.4 million), The Maze Runner (Fox) Week 3
08 (--) ¥60 million ($475,000), 0, ¥60 million ($475,000), Mother's Trees (Toei) NEW
09 (--) ¥50 million ($400,000), 0, ¥65 million ($520,000), The Hunger Games: Mockingjay (Part 1) (Kadokawa) NEW

10 (06) ¥41 million ($325,000), -38%, ¥775 million ($6.3 million), Kakekomi (Shochiku) Week 4

>Tomorrowland's pre-sales picked up leading into Saturday morning and as long as it plays decently during the day/night, it has a good chance of reaching ¥300 million ($2.5 million), which would be pretty solid and better than expected (although the Disney brand is stronger than ever right now). A ¥300 million start would get it above ¥1.5 billion, more than likely.

>Prophecy's pre-sales on the other hand leave much to be desired, and suggests an opening just above ¥200 million is probably as high as it's going to go despite the decent talent on and behind the camera. But it's June, a month largely dedicated for projects without much confidence in them.

>The Hunger Games: Mockingjay (Part 1) only earned ~¥15 million ($120,000) on Friday, so an opening weekend of ¥50 million is about the best it's going to manage (basically on par with Catching Fire).

Apologizes for the lack of weekend updates, but I'll have estimates up shortly.

About everything fell in line with the forecast above, although the holdovers didn't hold up as well.

No. All of the films have bombed. All imported YA titles bombs/disappoint (The Hunger Games, Twilight, Divergent, etc.). There aren't very many young people in Japan, and the ones there are have shown no interest in these properties.

The Maze Runner actually opened higher than any other YA title and should finish with the highest total, too, though a finish around ¥700 million is still pretty damn bad.

Weekend Ranking (06/06-07)

Image

01 (--) Tomorrowland (Disney) DEBUT
02 (--) Prophecy (Toho) DEBUT

03 (01) Shinjuku Swan (Sony) Week 2
04 (02) Cinderella (Disney) Week 7
05 (03) Initiation Love (Toho) Week 3
06 (04) Biri Gal (Toho) Week 6
07 (--) The Hunger Games: Mockingjay (Part 1) (Kadokawa) DEBUT
08 (--) Mother's Trees (Toei) DEBUT

09 (05) The Maze Runner (Fox) Week 3
10 (12) Sweet Red Bean Paste (Elephant House) Week 2

>Tomorrowland claims the top spot in its debut weekend, earning ¥264,510,300 ($2.2 million) with 190,216 admissions across 643 screens. The debut meets the generally low expectations, but it's a respectable start nonetheless, especially for a June release.

There are, however, a few early signs that could lead to some poor legs. The first sign is that the film fell on Sunday by over 10%, and the second is the fairly high avg. ticket price over the weekend of ¥1,391. Both of these points suggests the film is skewing towards an adult crowd and when combined with the mediocre reviews that this audience usually cares a lot about, could certainly shorten its legs in the market.

Regardless, though, the film is guaranteed to exceed the ¥1 billion milestone and could reach ¥1.5 billion with some luck. It's neither a success or a disappointment really, it's just "okay".

>Prophecy opened in second place, playing across 321 screens over the weekend, grossing ¥199,075,100 ($1.6 million) with 144,631 admissions. And similar to Tomorrowland, this debut is just "okay", but for different reasons.

The film is directed by a fairly popular director Yoshihiro Nakamura, and had three big names in the leads as well, consisting of Ikuta Toma, Suzuki Ryohei and Toda Erika. So, considering the caliber on screen and behind the camera, the debut is pretty weak, however, it's not bad for this time of year either. It, too, is just "okay" and should give Toho another ¥1 billion earner this year.

>Cinderella falls two more spots into fourth place in its seventh week in release, but after those seven weeks, Disney's latest has exceeded ¥5.2 billion ($43 million) with 4.15 million admissions. It has slowed down considerably now but it should still comfortably exceed ¥5.5 billion ($45 million), which will be a difficult but not an impossible target for this Summer's upcoming live-action films to try to overcome.

>The Hunger Games: Mockingjay (Part 1) debuted in seventh place, which improved upon its predecessor's debut in just tenth place. Playing on 165 screens, the first half of the final film earned ¥68,652,000 ($550,000) with 47,720 admissions since opening on Friday.

However, its weekend figures haven't been released yet for some odd reason, while its 3-day figures have been. I'm guessing the weekend gross itself is below that of Catching Fire's, so instead of reporting that poor news (for now), Kadokawa is reporting that the first three days in release is up 8% compared to its predecessor's first three days in release. Either way, this franchise has been incredibly disappointing in Japan.

>Mother's Trees comes in at eighth place over the weekend, earning ¥38,900,300 ($310,000) with 33,541 admissions across 200 screens. This is a very poor start, but with such a low avg. ticket price, it's clear it's playing primarily to a senior audience (probably 80%+) and legs can sometimes turn out excellent when this occurs.

>Sweet Red Bean Paste (or simply, "An"), which is only screening at Aeon Cinemas and some other small chains (though Kinezo has it screening at a few of their theaters), actually rose into the Top 10 this weekend. The film played at the Cannes Film Festival this year.

Some of weekend numbers are reported on local sites, like Eiga, but they're usually limited to openers.

So the remaining figures come from bunkatsushin, a professional Japanese trade paper that covers the entertainment industry. It requires a monthly subscription fee of ¥18,000 (~$150) for the newspaper and web version, but my Japanese friend and I split the monthly fee of ¥7,000 (~$55) for the web only version.

Oh I see, I was going to put the gross down on the Wikipedia page but I guess if there's no source to link to then I don't suppose I can

No big deal though.

For Dragon Ball Z?

I'm sure a public article will be released eventually with its final gross (probably when the DVD is released), so I'll post the page or PM you the link if/when that happens. Worst case is having to wait until early next year when Eiren releases the yearly box office results, which would include the final gross.
