Negligeable difference in seatings there. I thought DBZ would have more IMAX showings too, but maybe there will be more elsewhere. What about 4DX screenings ?

Also, Corpse, why not include the 'Lupin III vs DC' movie in the Conan total ?

IMAX still isn't big or very popular in Japan, with there being just 19 IMAX theaters in the entire market at the moment. Toho Cinemas also just opened their first IMAX theater this year.

DBZ doesn't have any 4D showings at Toho Cinemas, nor do I see any elsewhere right now. There's probably just a handful of theaters in Japan that support or show 4D movies.

And the Lupin III film is a spin-off that I didn't include in the main franchise. It's actually the second time there has been a Lupin III and Detective Conan collaboration, so it's kind of become a mini-franchise itself.

I see.

True. But the first one was a tv special so it's not (yet) a real theatrical franchise.

Someone on the BOT forums mentioned Conan was ahead in pre-sales at the moment. Any numbers for that ?

I've checked a few locations, and Conan is leading at most Toho theaters, but DBZ has the slight edge at some other non-Toho theaters.

It's going to be a close race. The Japanese Box-Office is always at its best when multiple event films open at the same time. Both films will very likely earn over 500,000 admissions, if not 600,000+ admissions over the weekend, setting the bar quite high for all the Summer releases to come.

I'll post some advance ticket sales tomorrow.

Looking forward to that.

Guess it will be coming down to Aeon then. Too bad they lack transparency compared to other chains.

Usual Locations (~43% of Market) - Saturday Pre-Sales

Advance Ticket Sales - Film (Week of Release)
54,164 - Dragon Ball Z: Revival of F (NEW)
45,671 - Detective Conan: Sunflowers of Inferno (NEW)
18,933 - Furious 7 (NEW)
15,032 - Crayon Shin-chan: My Moving Story! Cactus Large Attack! (NEW)
2,790 - Whiplash (NEW)

2,219 - Solomon's Perjury (Part 2) (Week 2)
2,188 - Birdman (Week 2)
1,524 - Assassination Classroom (Week 5)
1,309 - April Fools (Week 3)
938 - ANISONG World Tour Lantis Festival in Taipei (NEW)

Dragon Ball Z's number might include the few midnight showings it had, so the race may be even closer at the top.

And instead of posting a Weekend Forecast this weekend, I'll post regular updates every hour or so until mid-day (2/3PM in Japan, or 2AM/3AM EST in the US). These updates will be the real time ticket sales at the usual locations, of the time they're posted.

The first update will be posted in the next 20-30 minutes (covering the early morning, 7AM-10AM, showings).

So if I got this right the DBZ movie sold 54,000 tickets in advance for Saturday across theatres that make up 43% of all theatres?

Would you say these pre-sales are a good reflection of the overall weekend results to come ? Or is it too early for that (with some movies maybe being more fan-base driven) ?

DBZ and Conan are very strong. They both sold close to 20% of their available tickets for Saturday in advance.

And it's a good sign for DBZ to be ahead for Saturday so far, if it's just by a bit. Because if Conan wins Saturday, it's pretty likely to win the weekend as it should be stronger than DBZ on Sunday.

Battle of Gods sold 561,000 tickets on opening weekend so that's the number it has to beat. Would it be safe to say it had 100,000 advance ticket sales overall?

And sorry if I end up annoying you with maybe too upcoming questions, I've never been more interested to know how a film is going to do than this one.

Yeah, since 54,000 is from less than half of the nation's theaters. ;)

I went and looked back at your estimates when 'Battle of Gods' opened and its saturday was stronger than its sunday which is indeed unusual. Do you expect this one to follow a similar pattern ?

DBZ has a fanbase, so while Sundays are generally stronger than Saturdays in Japan, there are some films that play better on Saturdays.

Usual Locations (43% of Market) - Saturday Admissions (As of 10AM)

19,317 - Dragon Ball Z: Revival of F (Toei) NEW
14,323 - Detective Conan: Sunflowers of Inferno (Toho) NEW
5,968 - Crayon Shin-chan: My Moving Story! Cactus Large Attack! (Toho) NEW
4,008 - Furious 7 (Toho-Towa) NEW

578 - Doraemon: Nobita's Space Record of Space Heroes (Toho) Week 7
575 - Whiplash (Gaga) NEW
539 - Super Hero Taisen GP: Kamen Rider 3 (Toei) Week 5
530 - Assassination Classroom (Toho) Week 5
529 - Solomon's Perjury (Part 2) (Shochiku) Week 2
331 - Birdman (Fox) Week 2

Note that pre-sales are included in the running total for the time they were purchased for. So if Conan had an advance ticket sold for 7PM, it wouldn't be included in the tally above yet, only once the showing has begun.

Next update in an hour.

I see. Though after all these years you'd expect the Conan movies to be fan-base driven enough to decrease on sunday too.

Is it too early to say if beats the ¥354 million opening day of Battle of Gods?

Detective Conan appeals to a pretty large demographic, so it has enough children/family support to remain flat or increase on Sundays.

Yes. ;) Around mid-day (2PM or so), it'll become clearer, but we'll probably have to wait until end of day.

It's likely to open higher than Battle of Gods, though.

There was an increase in ticket prices last year (following an increase in VAT) so it won't need as many admissions to beat the ¥354 million opening of the previous movie. Looking at admissions is a better way for a movie-to-movie comparaison imo.

Sorry Corpse, bullza and I are giving you a lot of work.

What's the average ticket price in Japan now? If the movie is in 3D it would have a higher cost than Conan so would need less tickets to match it, right?

It could still need to match the last film's admissions to beat its gross. The ticket price increase last year really hasn't changed things too much. Most films are only experiencing a 1/2% avg. ticket price increase.

Apparently BOG had a few IMAX screenings but not 3D so adding in that parameter might make the change in average ticket price slightly more significant.

It's about 1,275 (~2% increase over the past few years thanks to the tax hike).

Yeah, but remember that 3D is a dying format in Japan. Very, very few films are managing 3D shares over 20/25% these days.
