Meyers has been on TV for what the last 12 years. You kind of know Viral and Seth Meyers do not go anywhere together. He'll be able to piggy back off of Fallon for years though. He's certainly never going to be a Tonight Show host.

Re: Late Night NBC discussion thread
Watched all three shows this week for Corden.
Pros: -He's really likable so far. He's endeared himself with the self-deprecating barbs while still feeling like a genuine host. -The lack of a traditional monologue is welcome. Only Letterman and Seth Meyers of the main five hosts can call the monologue jokes their strongest asset, so it's best to go with what feels natural. -The interview style is aces. It does away with the main issue of losing interest in just one-on-ones which can end up dragging a show down. The interactions are nice to watch.
Cons: -Reggie Watts. Don't like him, don't get him. His shtick is best performed by Fred Armisen. The "question" he poses to celeb guests is weird and has only gotten confused responses so far. Very inauthentic. -The games/skits with guests. Fallon hardly created the idea but it's most associated with him right now and it reeks of ripoff. And honestly aside from the Tom Hanks filmography, nothing really worked so far. -The lack of edgy material is disappointing, though it's not a necessity. I just believe if you're going on at 12:35, you do what you can to get attention without trying too hard.
Overall, I'm digging it. He's not Craig Ferguson, though who is?

Re: Late Night NBC discussion thread
Well making a Fallon type show is probably smart against Meyers, as I'm sure Colbert will end up being more like Meyers format.

I actually really like the guy whenever he's on. He seems really intelligent. Should be good.

Bill Simmons "heard" they went after Poehler, Louis CK and Amy Schumer.
Impossible to match Stewart? Maybe. But that's hardly fair to say considering how little we know about him.

Poehler, CK and Schumer don't exactly need The Daily Show. Actually, except maybe Poehler a bit, none of them would be the right host anyway.

For sure. And I know that's part of the reason why Craig left. I just would like to know who caused the rift first. I have to assume, knowing him from afar, that it's CBS's fault.
The biggest tragedy is that we likely won't see Craig get a show where he can be free of CBS's restrictions. And I don't really blame other networks. As loved as he is, the ratings were bad.

CRAIG FINALLY GOT AN EMMY NOMINATION...
... For Best Game Show Host.
To be fair, it's deserving. He saves the show. So sad that he's finally recognized for an Emmy for a game show instead of TLLS.

Re: Late Night NBC discussion thread
So James is basically pulling Craig numbers already. Too bad for James, but CBS deserves it for its horrible scheduling decision. I know they had nine months between Craig's departure and Colbert's debut, but this is a horrid start for James. He has no support here.

Re: Late Night NBC discussion thread
That's another thing. Will high profile guests keep coming to a low-rated late night show?
I'm a Seth fan, but it's kind of sad he can't even best Seth after four shows.

The Tommy's House episode of Corden is perhaps the most fun I've had with a non-Ferguson late night show episode.

jmovies wrote: The Tommy's House episode of Corden is perhaps the most fun I've had with a non-Ferguson late night show episode. 100% agree. That was a lot of fun to watch. Jeff Goldblum is one of my favorite guests for any talk show, and he didn't disappoint here. The whole setup was great. Two weeks in and honestly I have very few issues with Corden. I'm even warming to Reggie Watts, whose style felt a little better and funnier in Tommy' House. I'm coming to terms with the fact that a certain era of late night talk show is ending and that we'll never have another Craig Ferguson. But James is definitely a decent replacement for him. Seth and Jimmy are also decent hosts but I have a general idea what's going to happen each night. Jimmy might have a celeb cameo, and Seth is just a funny guy with absolutely zero surprises. I don't really care about Letterman anymore, and Kimmel is whatever. James has them all beat for me right now. I appreciate that I don't know what to expect from each show. I hope that continues.

Re: Late Night NBC discussion thread
After watching Monday and Tuesday shows for Corden, I have another suggestion for no one in particular: either cut the monologue or make it a little looser. He's made it clear he's not a "setup-punchline" guy, but the one little bit of monologue he does do feels over-rehearsed. His jokes about the guy with 17 girlfriends felt like a story he was telling friends, complete with jokes he had prepared. But it's such a brief piece of comedy between Reggie's intro and James' checking on guests that it feels like it can and maybe should be trimmed entirely.
I wonder if CBS will place him on hiatus all summer. The ratings have been average, though some of the blame has to be placed on scheduling. Why on Earth did he premiere in the middle of the NCAA. He's either had short three-day weeks or shows are postponed until 1am or later. I get the feeling they could place him on hiatus and re-tool the entire show, which is exactly what they don't want to do. The format is perfect right now for his abilities. But I can see CBS making him to a traditional show (monologue, bit at the desk, interview one celebrity at a time, music, end show).

Re: Late Night NBC discussion thread
I've been watching Last Week Tonight. Does anyone else feel like John Oliver is a little over-eager for laughs? Every joke seems to end with his own amused smirk, as if he's content with himself. I like the show and I like John, but it's a bit distracting. He's not guilty of anything that every other talk show host doesn't already do, but that doesn't mean he should.

Re: Late Night NBC discussion thread
Also, did anyone watch Cecily Strong at the White House Correspondents' Dinner? She slayed the 20+ minutes up there. And what a thankless job. Delivering over 20 minutes of material has to be brutal, but she had a lot of great jokes. And she proved to be incredibly smart about when to move on quickly with a joke that tanked, unlike a few other emcees this year (NPH...). I'm sure she had a great team of writers, but she pretty much proved that the wrong person was removed from Weekend Update on SNL.
I hope she gets her own variety/late night show eventually. She'll never get a movie career, kind of like Tina Fey never struck gold at the movies.

Re: Late Night NBC discussion thread
She had a really great demeanor and personality for it. She smiled through most of it, but it was almost a snarky smile, which was perfect.
I thought it was a big deal for her to do this, but then I looked beyond the last ten years of hosts to find the likes of... Sinbad, Paula Poundstone, Yakov Smirnoff, Cedric the Entertainer and Rich Little have hosted. Rich Little even hosted again in 2007. No knocking one of the greatest impressionists of all time, but he was hardly a relevant voice eight years ago. Kind of hard to believe that Colbert and Craigy Ferg hosted before and after Little, respectively.

Re: Late Night NBC discussion thread
Jimmy Kimmel drew important first blood on David Letterman's final night, opting to air a repeat against the legend's closer. I don't see how Fallon doesn't follow suit, being the ultimate kiss-ass, unless NBC forces him to go on.

Re: Late Night NBC discussion thread
Yeah, Letterman was the last of the old breed. A Titan has certainly gone. I used to watch Letterman religiously - especially back in the 90s. I enjoyed the finale. The Top 10 and the Foo Fighters/Montage in particular.
