 Re: 2014-2015 NFL Discussion Thread
Game is OhhhVER but someone decides to call that freaking play. I was hooting and hollering at Belicik for not calling a timeout with 50 seconds left or even letting score but Seattle trumped that by calling a pass play at the 1 yard line. Who the fuck does that? 50 seconds left and you got 2 timeouts with 3 chances to get the ball in the end zone? I agree with Collinsworth when he said if you can't get 1 yard with Lynch then so be it. You live with that, not increase the risk however improbable that your passing play might get intercepted. What a horrible decision on whomever's part.

He should refuse to sign the Seahawks contract on principle. And demand whoever is responsible for that call to deliver their head on a silver platter.

Seattle Got a miracle from the Football Gods with that catch and then blow it with likely one of the worst plays in Superbowl history.

At least it was great game, compared to last year. It was a questionable call, but if it had worked you would have been calling Carrol a genius. He is a gambler look at the gamble at the end of the 1st half.

Okay. I'll get over it far faster than I will with the loss to the Steelers (which is odd considering that the deficit was far less), but that was a great win for the Pats. Perhaps it's Stockholm Syndrome speaking more than anything else, but I'm glad to see Brady and the Pats win another one. At least my students (not to mention everyone else in MA and RI) will be really, really happen...

 Re: 2014-2015 NFL Discussion Thread
So with 25 seconds left and 1 timeout running on 2nd and 3rd down means if you miss on both you don't get a 4th down. Throwing on 2nd or 3rd stops the clock an extra time and they still get 2 runs by having 4th down available, so that throw ends up being a free play. Think that's the explanation for an otherwise insane call. But no logical reason to call a pass play to a congested area instead of chucking one up to the outside where it'd go out of bounds if it's not caught.

That was a fantastic game. One of the best Super Bowls I've ever watched. And Sad Richard Sherman makes me sad. But big ups to Michigan Man, Touchdown Tom.

Carroll claimed they picked that played because he had like 3 wides out but they had their goal line defense in. Whatever the case, it's gonna be the talk of the town tomorrow.

No, I'd argue even if it had worked, the call would still be questioned, except not in this degree because people would forget about it soon after given the different outcome. The only real justification for calling a pass play is to keep defense honest on 3rd down. Since Seattle only had 1 timeout left with 26 seconds to go, if they don't make it by running on 2nd down, they would have to burn the TO and have to throw at least on 3rd down to give them enough time for a 4th down. But, calling a slant in that situation is really unnecessary. Have Lynch in the back field as a decoy at least and use a play-action of some sort would have been my call if choosing to pass.

 Re: 2014-2015 NFL Discussion Thread
Only reason it was a silly play call is because Lynch is the most difficult back to tackle straight up since Emmitt Smith.
Other than that, situationally it made plenty of sense. Only one time out, 2nd down, and 19 seconds left to go. You have to throw on either 2nd or 3rd down. Have to.
An incomplete pass stops the game clock. An unsuccessful run does not. A timeout also stops the clock, and Seattle only had one timeout left. So if the Seahawks had run on second down and failed to get a touchdown, they would have had to call timeout.
Now, it's third down, and they have no timeouts left. So if they run on third and fail, the game is over. But if they pass on third and fail, the clock will stop, and they can run another play. So they basically have to pass on third, and the New England defense knows they have to pass.
By contrast, if you throw on second down and fail, the clock stops. Now it's third down, and you still have your time out. That means you could run on third, fail, and use the timeout to stop the clock and run another play on fourth down. That means New England has to defend against both the pass and the run, which puts Seattle in a more advantageous strategic position than they would be had they run and failed.

 Re: 2014-2015 NFL Discussion Thread
You keep mentioning they had only 20 seconds left but that isn't exactly right. It was 20 seconds or so when they snapped that stupid play but from the time Lynch got that ball to the 1 it started ticking down from 50 seconds or so. I was wondering why Bill wasn't calling a timeout there to save as much time as possible, so Seattle just took their fine time to line up and run that ridiculous play. They could have lined up in 10 seconds and run a run and done it again even if he were stopped or lost yards. Enough of the 20 seconds excuse...

 Re: 2014-2015 NFL Discussion Thread
I think Belichick rope-a-doped them. They were waiting for him to call a timeout, but he was never going to. They had their defense on the field, ready to go. Seattle rushed the playcall, and Wilson threw a pass too far in front of his WR and Butler made a TREMENDOUS, TREMENDOUS play.
The entire defense played that perfectly, from Chandler Jones covering Lynch out of the backfield, to Browner jamming his WR so there wouldn't be a pick, to Butler timing his jump perfectly.
The play call was fine. The Patriots just beat them. Straight up.

So with 30 seconds to go and the Superbowl on the line, you play for 3rd down instead of the win? That's just dumb. And if that's the case, why throw a slant in the middle of the field? Throw a fade or something to the outside. However, I think Chippy is correct that Seattle was thrown off by the non-timeout. If Wilson hits that pass then right now we are saying WHY DID BELICHICK WASTE SO MUCH TIME ON 2ND DOWN??? Any reasonable coach would have done it, but Big Bill had other ideas and the confusion worked greatly in his favor. The Patriots won because they were the better team. But the Seahawks could have easily stolen it at the end by calling a play without such a huge risk attached to it.
