It was three hours long, though. Even though Titanic slayed with about the same running time two years earlier and Fellowship of the Ring would do so two years later, it's still worth remembering that limiting the showtimes means limiting the business, especially in the pre-digital era. There were also quite a few other adult dramas out at the time (many of which were also really long). Looking near The Green Mile's spot on the 1999 chart, it's also astounding that American Beauty adjusts over $200 million. I know that it tapped into the zeitgeist and benefited hugely from the vast number of awards it won, but it's crazy to associate that adjusted number with a low-budget contemporary dramedy. The length certainly hurt it. Though the novel was huge and I recall at the time expectations were high due to the Kings/Darabont/prison connection - sort of reparation for Shawshank's poor BO showing and at the same time being a defacto sequel of sorts. American Beauty straddled the line between awards contender and audience pleaser nicely. It struck a chord with audiences - iconic among a year of many iconic and memorable films.

Travolta seems retired. Where the hell is he??
But Cage could easily get back in cinemas. He's just got weird and chooses crap.

Meet the Fockers adjusting to almost $360 million is absolutely insane.

Travolta wasn't without a bomb after the Pulp Fiction comeback (does anyone remember Mad City?), but the performance of Battlefield Earth in light of what his star power was still capable of a year earlier was hilariously awful. General's Daughter was actually a flop as it had a 95m budget.

And you fail to consider any home video or overseas returns. Seriously, that film is not considered a flop under any circumstances.

The General's daughter was certainly no flop. If anything it did far better than expectations and any right it had.

Surprised Babe "only" adjusts to 117 million. Seemed so huge at the time, at least as perceived by me as a 5-year-old.

However the budget was 95m and didn't even make 200m worldwide. So it was a flop in terms of numbers. Clearly a case of a movie just having a run away budget for some reason

 Re: Holy adjusted gross shit!
No it was a hit, budget was about 60 million and it made 150 million. Marketing and what not would have been easily covered for by VHS, DVD, TV rights, etc.
What's interesting is it literally is the last of the investigative procedural, R rated thrillers to make 100 million. Those types of films started to really flop badly after Along Came a Spider. I think the next to make 100 was Shutter Island 11 years later, and now maybe Gone Girl.

 Re: Holy adjusted gross shit!
The Green Mile is a lot like The Patriot, where the box office seemed meek in light of expectations because they spiritual successors to iconic movies, but it's not like their predecessors were huge hits, either.
Procedurals, I think, were killed by television.

Yeah Babe's gross does seem to pale in comparison to its popularity at the time. It was however seen as a hit - especially considering its late summer release status and the fact it wasn't animated. Similarly - Clueless from that same summer had a substantial pop culture impact which I don't think was adequately represented in its gross ($105m adjusted). On the other hand, that same summer's Congo adjusts to $150m and is perhaps one of the most forgotten blockbusters ever.

Yeah its a shame isn't it. Also Casino adjusts to a few million below it. Also a shame that Godfather III outgrossed it by a fair bit (though not unexpected)

As I mentioned before, the BOM budgets from that time used to include marketing costs.

That is seriously hilarious.
Too bad you didn't double down on Surprised Babe actually being a movie, zwackerm; that would have been KJ Gold worthy.
