This is a six-part mini-series by the Discovery Channel, adapted from Gold Diggers: Striking It Rich in the Klondike by Canadian author and historian Charlotte Gray. It stars Richard Madden (Game of Thrones), Abbie Cornish, Tim Blake Nelson, Tim Roth, and Sam Shepard. Executive produced by Ridley Scott, it is reportedly Discovery's first scripted series and premieres at 9/8c on January 20th.

I will definitely give it a chance. The subject is interesting, and I am a huge fan of Cornish, who is seriously underutilized in many of her recent films. I hope this is a complex, worthy role for her.

I enjoyed the first night. A bit whiplash inducing in the sense the first hour plays as a straightforward gold-rush adventure (man vs. nature), and then it becomes a who-is-triple-crossing-who, dialogue driven Western melodrama, but both halves held my attention.

The performances are strong (Tim Roth is a bit underutilized so far, but I imagine this will change), and the production values are high. I will definitely see it through to the conclusion. Shame it is not a full series.
