Name Your Top 20 Animated Shows
Just curious, I know a lot of us past our times of animation domination in our tv lives. But what were and are you favorite animated shows. I know 20 is asking a lot, but rather than doing my own Individual countdown (Which I'm still going to do,) I figured it would be fun to hear everyones. Mine would go like this:
20. Muppet Babies
Features your favorite Muppets, and while the idea of babies may throw you off, it's actually a very smartly written cartoon with nearly as much humor that you'd expect from the live action films. Some great satiresl and lampoons as well, make this a great place to start.
19. Captain Planet
What can I say, everyone knows the show. And I had the action figures growing up. You definitely don't see shows like this anymore. On the one hand, it's about treating your fellow man with respect no matter what race they are. On the other, learning about ways to save the planet never seemed so cool.
18. Charlie Brown and Snoopy Show
I love everything Peanuts, so as a kid I was surprised to find there was in fact a short lived animated show. It never quite reaches the heights of some of their best specials, but it's an entertaining show with the Peanut's Gang doing what they do best. Part of the charm is that it doesn't have to be a special occasion for the Peanuts to be entertaining.
17. Talespin
There was actually a time when The Disney Channel made some of the best animated programs, particularly in the early 90s when you still had to pay for the channel. One of the best intros ever and it features two famous secondary characters from The Jungle Book. It's just a very fun show throughout.
16. GI JOE
This show was obviously just created for the toys, but what fucking great toys they were. With all the crazy vehicles they had (My Brother actually has everything still, including the 7Ft. air craft carrier) the movies will never be as great as this show. Awesome characters, and all around great action that still holds up well. Of course there is a lot of cheese, with the famous PSA, but that's all apart of the fun.
Next 5 coming tomorrow.

Re: Name Your Top 20 Animated Shows
15. Rocco's Modern Life
Man I loved this show. Kind of a cross between a Sunday Morning cartoon and the other twisted animated shows around at the time. Great characters, humor that only gets better as you age, this show is a must see for anyone who missed when Nickolodeon was as clever and edgy as they were popular.
14. Gargoyles
Definitely a whole different kind of animated show. Great action and characters, but also much deeper and dialogue heavy. Not to mention a great voice cast. I really liked this show because it was so different and unlike so many other action shows at the time.
13. Chip & Dale Rescue Rangers
Uh, best theme song ever! Definitely up for debate. This show was awesome, it took lovable disney characters, and combined them with Magnum PI and Indiana Jones, and every cop show you can think of. Such a great show.
12. The Real Ghostbusters
This show can be written off as many film based shows often times fall flat on their face, but this is a whole different animal. It takes everything that worked about the first film and just expands on it. And while it looks light hearted, it certainly is, there are more than enough darker episodes as well that any Ghostbuster fan would love.
11. Alvin and Chipmunks
Just narrowly missing my top 10, what I like to call the definitive incarnation of Alvin and Chipmunks. Everything works hear from Dave's "ready to crack at any moment" to the chipmunks themselves voiced perfectly. Some great songs as well along the way. I even have the film they made still in VHS form.
Interesting and nostalgic thread, I guess Thundercats, Batman the Animated Series, Pokemon, Digimon (First Season Only), Justice League of America are in my top 5 without a doubt

Re: Name Your Top 20 Animated Shows
The Flinstones better be #1 or this list is invalid - - without the pioneering work of Fred & Barney there would be no primetime animated TV shows.
^ It's not a poll, you have to post your own favorites

So, you are inducing Thegun to agree with you, interesting!, however I'm not gonna discuss, The Flintstones is indeed one of the greatest shows ever

I'll have to expand on this at some point, probably after Corpse posts his top 150 . It's difficult to rank the older stuff, as I don't remember much about Flintstones, Jetsons, Animaniacs, etc... So I stuck with my absolute favorites from childhood and mixed them in with my favorites from today.

10. Thundercats
I seriously had every single toy from this show and He Man. I even had a retractable sword, which remained one of the coolest toys I ever had. great characters, awesome animation. With this, GI Joe, and He-man, they pretty much rewrote the book on what it took to make a highly entertaining show.

Re: Name Your Top 20 Animated Shows
9. Ducktales (and Darkwing Duck)
It is basically cheating, but the fantastically underrated Darkwing Duck is spinoff of Ducktales. Which in it's own right one of the best animated shows of all time. And the NES game is still one of the best games ever. I can't wait to get the updated X-Box version. These shows blended genres to make some of the sharpest, funniest, and visually fun animated shows for kids. And I'd go so far to say that the Ducktales Movie is probably the most underrated and one of the best Disney Animated films ever produced. Disney felt so too as Aladdin borrows heavily from this film as well.

Re: Name Your Top 20 Animated Shows
8. Ren & Stimpy
I'd say this is probably top 3 most important cartoons ever made. So dark and twisted, the show was not only more geared towards adults, it was almost shocking that such a show used to air around Rugrats. This show is borderline gross at times, but as you get older it just gets more hilarious. Granted the first half of series is much better and the 2nd half isn't nearly as good as when the creator was there, but the series itself still gets high marks from me, and the animation is just great. Probably the only cartoon my mom ever had any issue with me watching.

7. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
This show was my child hood. Almost everything they did was awesome. The best toys I ever had, some of the best video games. I loved the movies (Well the first two anyway, even at 7 I knew the third blew) and this show was awesome. Looking back, people like to call it as cheesy as the pizza they devoured every episode, but dammit, that's part of the charm. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, some people love the dark elements, I love the fun elements.

My top 20 is very interchangeable, I love all of these shows. Launchpad McQuack is one of the best characters ever!

Re: Name Your Top 20 Animated Shows
6. Doug
Everyone that I know basically grew up with this show. Basically a modern day Charlie Brown right down to the friends and Doug's canine companion. Nothing about Doug was cool, but that's what worked. It was a show about social awkwardness, and felt more like a normal TV show dealing with kid problems. It also was very funny, had some great animation, and some instantly quotable lines that always remain. Granted the Disney version of the show while still popular, lost some of the purity, but shout the word "Oh Eee Oh, Killer tofu" and everyone will know what you're referencing, and of course Quailman!

5. Batman: The Animated Series
I absolutely loved Burton's Batman films growing up and to be honest that's all I really knew of Batman outside of the Adam West show. I'm not really a comic book reader outside of about 100 Superman Comics I still have, but this show the more I watched it, the more I really enjoyed the vast array of great smaller characters that would never see the light of day in a film version. Featuring a great cast that still gets employed for the same roles 20 years later, and great action, it's a near perfect series that still is what people look to to learn how to make a good Batman adaptation.

4. Scooby Doo: Where are you?
This was easily my favorite cartoon when I was really young. So much so that I've seen pretty much every incarnation of the characters. I was there opening day when the film disappointed millions of people, despite an excellent cast and some moments of genius but nothing tops the original. It's as formula as formula shows go, but it's still one of the best formula's out there. For a kid it has everything, some spooks and thrills in a awesome location you wish you could go to, always ending in a great resolve, a lot of humor, great animation, and a talking dog! And the Mystery Machine van is just awesome!

Re: Name Your Top 20 Animated Shows
3. Pinky and The Brain
I do believe people underestimate how much Spielberg actually did for animation. Taking a cue from the Simpsons, but keeping within the formula of a Loony Toons Short, Tiny Toons, Animaniacs, and eventually Pinky and the Brain (and a popular spinoff of it's own) were all awesome in their own way. It was a huge variety of new characters with their own quirks, flaws, and hilarity, while also paying homage to the characters that came before them. Pinky and the Brain however, were just epic. They are pretty much the Abbott and Costello of Animation duos. Hilarious, extremely clever, the show continues to have a lasting impact on me.
