Re: WGA names Top 101 best-written shows of all time
I still say skip season two. They know they fucked up. Pretty much everything that happens in season two is never mentioned again. Life is short, good tv is ample, and you really can pass on Season 2 and not miss a beat.

Re: WGA names Top 101 best-written shows of all time
"Friday Night Lights" is one of the best TV shows of all time. Anyone who hasn't watched it should. And skipping season 2 is a mistake. While it is hands down the weakest there are some standout moments I would have hated to miss. Like what about Matt's "everybody leaves me" moment in season 2, episode 14? This is one of the best-acted moments in the series and important in the development of the relationship between him and Coach Taylor.

You should definitely watch Boardwalk Empire, Doc. It is very undervalued on this forum. It is astonishing.

...and yes, The Dick Van Dyke Show is really as good as it's ranking indicates. The owners have been very tight with distribution on broadcast TV - - it hasn't been in wide syndication in decades. Fortunately, there is an exemplary box set for anyone who wants to witness the full glory of Carl Reiner's masterpiece (also just released in Blu-ray at the end of last year).

Lecter - go for Boardwalk and Mad Men. Though give them a chance past the first couple episodes. Both shows hit their stride in the second and third seasons (and the latter had a great fifth and sixth (so far) season as well.

Boardwalk Empire is fun in the period detail, performances and, yes, violence. It's usually pretty indifferently written tho. I expect more with that pedigree.

No Scrubs or Futurama makes this list INVALID.

BTW, for anyone interested in catching up on this slice of television history, there's a great deal on the series box set on Amazon till the end of the month - - $88.99 on DVD and $117.75 on Blu-ray.

Thegun wrote: No 24 or Spaced is kind of crap, and the order is a little out there. But it's not a terrible list. What do people think of Sopranos as number one. I'm not sure I'd put it that high, I do think Seinfeld actually go robbed. Maybe it's my bias that comedy is much harder to write than drama, but Seinfeld has been off the air for 20 years and I still laugh at all the jokes more than most comedies today. On Seinfeld getting robbed at #2, there are some good shows up there. And all the shows should still make you laugh or they shouldn't be on the list at all. But wtf? Frasier really got robbed at #23.
