Re: Is there really a true "biggest show on TV"?
It appears like you just answered your own question.
Personally, however, I will always consider the show the biggest that reaches the most total viewers. I realize that the demo is more relevant from an economic point of view, but to me personally most viewers = biggest.

Yeah it's impossible I think to have a biggest show anymore but I feel there are bigger shows out there at the moment that don't get just representation and that just comes down to Nielsen still being a horrible system.

Yeah, too much cable channels now so that a series can't even hold a dominant share anymore. I guess Season 5 and early Season 6 of Idol was the last of them titans - 30+ million viewers regularly and between 10-15 rating in the demo.

Old people are people too. I like how we segregate viewership. If not 18-49 year olds, then six figure income people, and then twitter posts and of course the favorite, illegally pirated show because you assholes are to cheap to pay for cable subscription.
Also network shows have become increasingly boring and it doesnt help that cable shows have become alot more interesting over the years. At least its nice to have shows like The Following liven up things a bit

Yeah cable has made it difficult now and we now have shows with fan followings as well and can still be dominant. Big Bang and NCIS dominate the broadcast networks, Walking Dead pulls in big ratings, Game of Thrones brings in good ratings but sell more blu rays, and I am sure there are other examples.

Magnus wrote: While NCIS does have huge viewers, its 3.7 demo is something that can't be ignored. And while BBT has a nice mix of viewers and demo, The Walking Dead beats it in the demo. I think each also attract a very different kind of audiences that its hard to say which one is truly the biggest.
Will we ever have a show that is just far and away the clear "biggest show on TV"? I kind of feel like it's almost impossible for a show to just gain that dominance anymore over everything else. Well NCIS reruns put up over 4 million on USA, that can't be ignored. Though Seinfeld still puts up over 2 million an episode on it's reruns as well. The TV audience has just been split up so much the last few years, the conventional Must See Tv lineup is just too huge now that one show does not get domination it sometimes deserves.

NCIS is a procedural. It's a given for it to have great replay value. Same thing with multi-cams.

DVR is really what killed network viewership.

I agree with that...
Downton Abbey gets huge ratings in the UK and in Europe.

I'm more interested in the biggest show off TV. Turning on the TV is easy, so audience figures can be generated quite easily.

I would say Game of Thrones beats True Blood pretty easily. Season 1 broke all records for a HBO show and Season 2 is breaking those records.
