How's hype for Hobbit in China, xia? Tell me it's huge. ;)

There's posters up in my local cinema a full 2 months prior to its release. Not seen that for any other movie.

Yeah, the hype is probably the biggest among the Jan/Feb releases.

Hmm there are some people predicting more for Skyfall.

Good to hear. Likely won't embarrass then as in some other Asian country that starts with a J.

Release schedule for foreign movies:

Jan 21: Skyfall
Jan 25: Gone
Jan 31: Cloud Atlas
Feb 15: A Good Day to Die Hard
Feb 16: Jack Reacher
Feb 21: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Things have become more complicated for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Not only will it have to contend with A Good Day to Die Hard on Feb 15, but on Feb 16 cinemas will be getting Jack Reacher, this will also affect Die Hard's total gross.

With 36.7m admissions in the bank, does it still look likely that LOST IN THAILAND will beat TITANIC's 40m admissions? Or will LIT now start to drop like a rock?

Well, I'd say no to it beating Titanic. Many cinemas aren't showing Lost in Thailand anymore where I live.

It got 1.75m admissions last week, so unlikely it will hit 40m admissions total. Avatar's total is safe as well. Still, what a run it has been.

170m yuan for The Grandmaster for the opening 6 days.

Doubt it. None of the QT's films have been release there, I believe.

It was on a legitimate movie site. The Chinese equivalent to netflix.

Oh come on, Lecter. You must know that a film so violent will never be released in China. It would be cut to shreds and the result would be a 30 minute borefest (including credits).

Huge opening for Skyfall as expected. It should easily reach to $60m with this opening I guess if the WOM is good.

You can get your own numbers:

The release schedule is for me. I don't like keeping a pad next to my computer, so I post it on here.

Since Skyfall opened on a Monday, the first week was the full 7 days, so the multiplier is probably not going to reach 2, although Lunar New Year holiday should help its 3rd and 4th week.

How long does a film usually get to run in China?

Usually..as long as it's still popular. But in some cases, usually imported films, a run can last 28 days, 30 days or even 34 days. It all depends how much was agreed with SARFT when registering the film for Chinese exhibition. In order to not limit the amount of days, you have to apply for something, but many studios don't bother. I don't blame them either, foreign movies do not make much money beyond the intial 4-week slot. The Expendables 2, for example, played for 34 days, then it was pulled from all cinemas, but it made the majority of its gross in 3 weeks.

Will Hong Kong always enjoy the relative autonomy it does now, or will there be a point where China proper can restructure and control it?
