It's pretty incredible that we're looking at a successful U.S. release possibly being outgrossed by the entire gross of a single country. I know Titanic 3D did it, but this is a lot different.

The Chinese film Lost in Thailand is doing some incredible business. Will breeze past $100m total.

It looks so shit, though. It's basically the Chinese version of The Hangover Part II. I was going to see it the other day because it's offered with English subtitles, but I decided against it.

She twisted my arm. We're going to see it in a few hours. I suppose it'll be interesting to see this huge mega-hit and see what all the fuss is about.

Lost in Thailand has already made $73m, and I've just been to the cinema today to see it. The cinema was packed. Not a seat available. Everybody absolutely loved it. I've never scenes like this before, not even in the UK. When we came out, the queue waiting to go in and see it was also massive. Must have been about 60 people there, and a load more buying tickets. I wouldn't be surprised if this was the highest grossing movie for a long time. SARFT will finally be happy that a Chinese movie is capitalising on the embargo for US movies to be shown.

Did you like the movie too? Was Hangover that popular in China?

The Hangover wasn't necessarily that popular in China, but the first film of this series, Lost on Journey, got pretty good WOM when released in 2010. Still, nobody expected the sequel to be this huge, and it's benefitting from even better WOM. With Life of Pi and Lost in Thailand, they pretty much overshadowed Back to 1942, which was the overwhelming favorite to win the December crown.

Post Re: China Box Office (Lost in Thailand: $109.5m in 12 days)
Lost in Thailand's recording setting run continues. Its second week of 374.4m yuan is the highest ever for a sophomore frame, beating Transformers 362m. It also set an all-time record for admissions in a week with 11.75m, surpassing Titanic 3D's previous mark of 10.5m. Its total now stands at 684.4m yuan, or $109.5m, after just 12 days. 1b yuan ($160m) is for certain, and with holidays coming up, I'm really not sure about its ceiling.

I disliked the movie, but I'm hoping it takes the record away from Avatar. I like countries to have local movies as their highest grossing.

Lost in Thailand passed 1b yuan ($160m) on Tuesday in China. It already set the new record for attendance with 30m+ and is looking to break Avatar's all-time gross record of 1.3787b yuan in a few weeks.

CZ12 is actually doing very well itself and should pass $100m total this weekend. This has been a pretty incredible December.

It's not that much different from the rest of the world if you look at the top grossers in various countries. By comparison, U.S. actually has the best looking top 10 in terms of quality.

Most of the world has terrible taste too then, I guess. Big 3D blockbusters are, on the whole, pretty shit, and these huge Chinese blockbusters (CZ12 and Lost in Thailand) are below-par too. That pretty much covers all of China's top grossing movies this year and last.

I hope China can save some credibility and give The Hobbit a massive gross.

That's a pretty bad list, in my opinion. Avatar, Shrek 2 and ROTK being the only great movies (not seen The Impossible yet)

The Grandmaster opened to about 30m yuan, a pretty good number.

Lost in Thailand is at 1.2b yuan now.

China box office up 30% from 2011, but Chinese film share is down from the same period. Total revenue was up to $2.74b for 2012 with the highest grossing movie being Lost in Thailand, now the highest Chinese movie ever and it's going to end up as the highest grossing movie in China.

Really good results for China still surprised that foreign movies are doing this well when government seems to be getting this hard.

It's pretty tough for a government to control 1.4 billion people. They try, and they succeed in many areas, but moviegoers love foreign products. China would be like any other country (US films dominating while local films get made less and less) if the government stopped trying to skew the current state of moviegoing.

I WANT TO SEE THE GRANDMASTER SO BADLY. :P :(

How is the reception, critical and among general moviegoers? I presume it will not be as well regarded as Ip Man by the latter.

There's no English subtitles, so I haven't seen it yet (and probably won't). There's not even English subs in Hong Kong which is odd, so you'll probably see it before me, which is even odder!

As for reception, it's hard to tell. On the Chinese version of IMDB it has a 7.9 compared to IP Man's 7.6 and IP Man 2's 7.5, so that's a good sign - although I am seeing a lot of 9.0 scores, so it may just be one or two extremely low scores that are pulling it down. 2046 has 7.2 and In the Mood for Love has 7.5. It's doing pretty damn well in that regard, but we won't know the true reception until we see some numbers.

The receptions are pretty polarized, but more on the positive side. Then again, Chinese audience tends to have such reaction to Wong Kar-Wai's films like In the Mood for Love and 2046. Zhang Ziyi is supposed to be the one shined the most, while Tony Leung actually didn't impress as much as usual.
