KANSAS CITY, Mo., Jun 29, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- AMC Theatres(R) announced today that based on advance tickets sales, The Dark Knight Trilogy is set to shatter the company's previous record for a marathon-style event, prompting AMC to continue to add Dark Knight Trilogy shows at locations around the country. The Dark Knight Trilogy, available in IMAX and traditional format, begins at 6 p.m. July 19 and features BATMAN BEGINS, THE DARK KNIGHT and the midnight premiere of THE DARK KNIGHT RISES at 12:01 a.m. July 20. The event is just $25, and just $40 to see all three films in IMAX(R) Digital Theatres.

AMC guests have purchased more than 23,000 advance tickets to The Dark Knight Trilogy, including more than 11,000 tickets sold to see the Trilogy in IMAX, accounting for multiple sold out shows in both IMAX and traditional formats. The advance tickets put The Dark Knight Trilogy on pace to shatter AMC's marathon-event record of more than 30,000 tickets to The Ultimate Marvel Marathon in May. In addition to the success of The Dark Knight Trilogy, AMC has sold more than 100,000 advance tickets for THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, three weeks from the opening of the movie.

In response to guest demand, AMC continues to add showtimes for both the Trilogy and THE DARK KNIGHT RISES midnight premiere at its locations around the country, including a handful of 3:45-4 a.m. showtimes of THE DARK KNIGHT RISES in IMAX. Ticket sales for THE DARK KNIGHT RISES midnight premiere are being led at AMC Lincoln Square 13 in New York, AMC Metreon 16 in San Francisco and AMC Universal Citywalk 19 in Los Angeles. All three locations feature THE DARK KNIGHT RISES in the IMAX 15/70 Film format.

"We had high expectations for this event and we've still been blown away by the response from our guests and the demand for both The Dark Knight Trilogy and THE DARK KNIGHT RISES midnight shows," said Robert J. Yeah without 3D its next to impossible. Then again Hunger Games did 152m in 2D so TDKR should at least be able to make 30-40m more than that. 190m would be very impressive indeed.

AMC has done around $1.5m in pre-sale business so far. If you use DH2's theater count of 4,375 as a base for TDKR, AMC has about 8% of the market for this movie. Divide $1.5m by 0.08 and you end up with $18.75 million in domestic pre-sales. Fucking insane considering it's 3 weeks out.

What's even crazier is that we haven't even seen the MAD last minute rush for tickets yet. Midnights for this thing are going to be off the charts.

A friend of mine is going with three of his friends (none of which I know) to a 6 PM IMAX trilogy and he said he's trying to contact them and see if they're okay with me going. They better make a decision fast because I'm going to need to get a ticket before they're all gone

Not all the pre-sales are for midnight. The Dark Alfred also made a good point at the BO.com forums. AMC only owns 8% of the theaters in North America, but their screen count percentage is higher than that. They are a huge chain. You won't see too many "AMC 8" type of theaters, but you will see a lot of local theater chains with smaller screen counts like that. A lot of AMC's theaters have 18 or more screens. So the total pre-sales are probably more like $15m and maybe even lower. Alfred said he thinks it's over $10m, but nowhere near $18m.
