Hi Xia,
Can you confirm status of Spidey reboot and TDKR in China. Chinese folks @ BO.com forums are saying Sept for Spidey and TDKR is cancelled? I wonder why chinese govt want no major hollywood release in summer.

Hollywood films have been cleaning up for several months now with Titanic, Battleship, Avengers, MIB3, Snow White, Madagascar 3, and now The Hunger Games (with Hugo getting a release in the middle as well), so there could be a sentiment that they want to keep Jul/Aug more open to the domestic releases.

That is ok. it makes sense to have some windows dedicated to local films.

But does that mean we will see spidey/tdkr in september or they wont allow these films at all.

The latest news I got is that TDKR will be released on 9/2, 3 days after TAS. If that's the case, TAS is doomed.

They're both doomed being released 2 months after their theatrical debut. China is one of the biggest bootlegging markets. The later release date is a killer. Both movies will be bootlegged to hell and back by the time they come out in China.

Inception had similar delay (July/August has historically been the local films protection months), and that didn't prevent it from grossing over 400m yuan, exceeding many of the original expectations.

Inception wasn't a sequel or franchise movie. Wouldn't that be an advantage when it comes to bootlegging? TDK was hugely bootlegged in China, supposedly one of the biggest ever. Everyone over there is waiting on the sequel and it comes out at least 2 months earlier overseas than it does in China. They will all see it long before it shows up in theaters.

I'm thinking the China BO for THG is about 12M so far. The OS gross for THG has increase by 12m in BOM.
http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=m ... rgames.htm from 247M to 259M.

EDIT: 'The Hunger Games' opened to $9.8 million in China this weekend, which brings its overseas total to $258.9 million'

RFB, you are too negative about TDKR. I am sure it will do great in china. I was talking to my company folks in shanghai and I heard there is great excitement about TDKR. Plus the movie wiil be great to see in iMax. China is seeing explosion of iMax screens. No bootleg can replace seeing this one in big screen.

The films will both do okay but not the big crazy numbers as expected...

Considering TA got 90 million, we expected the same for TDKR and more for ASM.

From TASM official website: August 10

I think it was recently updated so that seems to be the official word for now.

Xia,
I keep hearing that TDKR and Spidey are opening on the same day. If that happens how big the weekend will be? I remember couple of local movies opened last year and both made around $100M.

Yeah, that was December of 2010 with Let the Bullets Fly and You Are Not the One 2, but they were actually released a week apart. I still don't think TDKR and TASM are opening on the same day, but will try to get the latest info.

Painted Skin 2 is off to a record-breaking start for domestic films, probably looking at a $50m opening 4 days.

Interesting. Because of the content? Or just because of the limited number of Western films allowed to be released every year?

More because of the content I'd say, but who knows, The Hunger Games did eventually get approved and released, and that was certainly a surprise.

Painted Skin 2 setting records in China can only mean 1 thing; major dud in HK.

So if a film does well in China it flops in HK..

If a film does well in HK it does well in China?

Most of the time. Nowadays I think the studio makes the decision to dub it into Putonghua for the Mainland audience whereas in HK they don't give a shit about a population of 7m people so HK'ers are stuck with the language it was made in.

lol the Chinese Professor ad is very uncomfortable but has some harsh truths for America.

The parts about scaring about the Chinese is silly, but frankly if one looks at America it does remind us of the Roman Empire. That empire stayed around for a while but never reached its peak after it started to face crisis in the third century.
