SMASH and THE BIGGEST LOSER will premiere in midseason.

New series SAVE ME, 1600 PENN, NEXT CALLER, DO NO HARM, INFAMOUS, and HANNIBAL will launch in midseason.

New Series Descriptions
“Go On” — Misery loves company. Unless you’re sportscaster Ryan King (Matthew Perry, “Friends,” “Mr. Sunshine”) who thinks misery should just be left alone. After taking some time off, Ryan – who recently lost his wife in a car accident – is now ready to get back to work. And while he seems like his same old charming, cocky self, his boss won’t set him back on the air until he seeks counseling. So, Ryan reluctantly joins a support group with one goal in mind: get in, get out and get back on the radio as quickly as possible. Played by the fast-talking, sarcastic, and charismatic Perry, Ryan gives grief a real run for its money. Within one day of group therapy, he hijacks the meeting and suddenly the downtrodden are cajoled into playing a game of “who’s got the best sob story?” And in no time all of them are battling it out, trying to one-up each other’s despair. Now, this is fun! Ryan’s total lack of interest in healing might be just what this group needs – and maybe, exactly what he needs to move on with his life. “The New Normal” — These days, families come in all forms – single dads, double moms, sperm donors, egg donors, one-night-stand donors… It’s 2012 and anything goes. Bryan (Andrew Rannells, “Girls,” “The Book of Mormon”) and David (Justin Bartha, “The Hangover”) are a Beverly Hills couple and they have it all. Well, almost. With successful careers and a committed and loving partnership, the one thing missing is a baby. And just when they think the stars will never align, enter Goldie (Georgia King, “One Day”), an extraordinary young woman with a checkered past. A Midwestern waitress and single mother looking to escape her dead-end life and small-minded grandmother (Ellen Barkin, “Ocean’s Thirteen”), Goldie decides to change everything and move to L.A. with her precocious 8-year-old daughter. Desperate and broke – but also fertile – Goldie quickly becomes the guys’ surrogate and quite possibly the girl of their dreams. “Animal Practice” — Meet Dr. George Coleman (Justin Kirk, “Weeds”), a top-dog New York veterinarian. With an unorthodox style of operating, George’s success comes from his undeniable gift with animals of all kinds. That is, all but the human kind. Dorothy Crane once held the key to George’s heart, but today she also holds the key to the family business as she takes over Crane Animal Hospital. Not only is she George’s new boss, but her romantic history with him and her lack of experience with animals is seriously cramping his style. Dorothy is whip-smart and ambitious, and she’s going to make George pay for the past. Needless to say, he’s determined not to make any changes in his (animal) kingdom — which includes poker games with a resident capuchin monkey. “Guys with Kids” — From Emmy winner and executive producer Jimmy Fallon comes a new comedy about three thirty-something dads trying to hold on to their youth, while holding onto their new babies’ hands. Easy, right? Thankfully, Chris (Jesse Bradford, “The West Wing”), Nick (Zach Cregger, “Friends with Benefits”) and Gary (Anthony Anderson, “Law & Order”) have each other to help navigate their survival as new dads, while still trying desperately to remain dudes. Balancing work or staying at home, painfully married or happily divorced, they know that taking care of the little ones while maintaining a social life is a daily challenge. Whether it’s hosing the little squirt down in the kitchen sink or hitting the bar strapped with a baby björn, these guys are on a roller-coaster adventure – parenting like you (and they) have never seen before. Also starring are Jamie Lynn Sigler (“The Sopranos”) and Tempestt Bledsoe (“The Cosby Show”). Someone once said it is much easier to become a father than to be one. These three guys are about to find out just how true that is. “Guys with Kids” is produced by Universal Television and Holiday Road. “Save Me” — Welcome to the Midwestern suburbs, where exciting things never happen. Well, almost never. Of course, her husband Tom (Michael Landes, “Final Destination 2”) is skeptical and dismissive – and his mistress (Alexandra Breckenridge, “American Horror Story”) is stunned to learn that her lover’s wife is now a prophet! But when inexplicable things begin to happen, everyone’s beliefs are tested. “1600 Penn” — The Gilchrists are just the average American family dealing with all the everyday issues – like a grown kid who’s forced to move back home, children who are smarter than their teachers and a stepmom (Jenna Elfman, “Dharma and Greg”) desperately trying to win over the kids. They’re loving, fun and a little crazy. In other words, just like everybody else. With one exception: they live in a very special house. The White House! Whether it’s entertaining foreign dignitaries, sneaking away for a night out, dealing with middle school crushes or putting out fires – figuratively and sometimes literally – there’s never a dull moment in the Gilchrist White House. I can't decide if I'm upset Community is being dumped on Fridays (leading out of the dreaded Whitney, no less) or happy we don't have to wait until midseason for it. Ech.

At least Parenthood got to keep its time slot and will premiere in the fall.

Hopefuly Go On bombs so Perry can resume his gig on The Good Wife. He's excellent there...

Also Do No arm sounds like an alter ego of My Own Worst Enemy. Don't see why they need to do that one again.

Infamous sounds like a mix of Veronica Mars and Revenge.

I'll definitely be checking out Hannibal and I expect a lot from it (Fuller lined up Dead Like Me, Wonderfalls and Pushing Daisies so far, all excellent and kooky TV shows) and Revolution interests me. Others sound generic to me. I'd like to see some clips/trailers though.

Also holding back Smash isn't a good thing. People are already losing interest. Prolonged hiatus won't help it.

Dang. It's going to be interesting how Community does.

So here are my thoughts...


Will give it a try (in order from most looking forward to):

Revolution looks extremely cool. Much better than ANY post-Lost JJ Abrams-related TV shows. This one is definitely on my list.

The New Normal is slightly shooting for Modern Family territory but it actually looks kinda good. It helps that I like Bartha. Also while Nene Leakes isn't in any clip so far, she's on the banner. I think she's awesome. She made me laugh in The Apprentice and she is actually pretty damn good in Glee so I'm interested to see her again. She does have some comedic talent. I actually didn't get this was about two gays while reading the synopsis the first time. Somehow I missed it. LOL.

Saving Hope's 27 second trailer sells it better than two or three 1+ minute clips of other shows. Looks interesting. Will give it a try.

Save Me looks very good. Heche is great. I think I'll give this one a try.

Infamous indeed feels like NBC's stab at Revenge+Veronica Mars.

Chicago Fire's two scenes don't help it much. It still sells it as a show about fire fighters. To me that's not enough of a hook. Both available scenes could've come from any movie or so.

Maybes:

Go On's two clips don't sell it. Perry is a bit too Mr. Sunshine-ish IMHO. But it feels like it could be a good show. Also Everybody Hates Chris's Tyler James Williams made me laugh just by appearing. It reminded me how great that show was and also it was kinda funny seeing him all grown up. He's certainly big now...

Do No Harm's pilot might be interesting, but I see this one getting stale very quickly. They went for a more thrillerish approach which got me interested.

Animal Practice will either turn out being a great weird show or this years worst comedy show. This one needs to be seen in full to judge IMHO. But it does look very limited in where it can go.

Definitive No's:

1600 Penn looks forced and boring.

Next Caller looks meh. Not bad, but just meh. Don't see anything interesting in it.

Guys With Kids looks horrible. This years Whitney.



Unfortunately there are no videos up for Hannibal yet, but as I said I'll definitely check that one out.

It's really disappointing they are holding off on Smash until mid-season. Bad idea. People might have forgotten all about it by then. Not to mention I think it fits best with The Voice.

I wish Go On and The New Normal would switch places. All Matthew Perry shows have ended up doing poorly and I think The New Normal has a good chance at doing well. It should get the benefit of airing after The Voice. At least Parenthood looks to have better lead-ins than usual.

It is great they are starting The Voice in the fall I think.

I really think they needed to do something better with their Thursday night schedule. I seriously expected more of a switch-up. Maybe they should move this comedy night to a different night. With CBS likely doing another comedy night on Thursday nights they will get slaughtered.

Up-fronts week is so exciting. Is it sad I think that?

Given that CBS only ordered two new sitcoms (Partners and Friend Me), that doesn't appear to be happening at the moment.

On first glance, before watching any previews: Revolution, Go On, The New Normal, 1600 Penn, Save Me, Infamous jump out as shows I'd definitely consider. Seems like NBC has better pilots than usual.

Couldn't they still do that? They have How I Met Your Mother, 2 Broke Girls, Two and a Half Men, Mike & Molly, The Big Bang Theory, Partners, Friend Me, and while it's not a sure thing I would expect Rules of Engagement as well. If one of the shows was an outright bomb they could just replace it with a Big Bang rerun.

I suppose it's possible but you also have to remember shows are ordered for midseason too. We won't know until their upfront.

I always wondered what was stopping a network from greenlighting a show in October/November for a February/March start? Why order all shows in May only?

No way Hannibal lasts more than a season.

It's almost as if NBC wants to fail.

Is it really, though? The audience is so miniscule and simultaneously loyal to start out with, I'm not sure it matters what time slot it's in at this point. I could even see a scenario where it does identical numbers on Friday as it did on Thursdays.

The pairing with Whitney is dumb, but that's NBC for you.

I'm with Libs. I really don't think this move for Community is a big deal. The audience is already so small. I doubt it will lose much of its audience at all. Its fans should follow it to a new night. Hell, just maybe this Friday night slot will allow it to get either an extended season or another season with expectations for Friday night programs being so low.

But that's been the policy at NBC now for a few years. "Well, it can't possibly get worse!" But it can. Watch 3.5 million turn into 2.5 million. That's the difference. Throwing Community and Whitney together on Friday night isn't magically going to get MORE viewers. It's going to alienate what little fanbase either show has and sink them both.

But that's true all over their schedule. What do they think they'll accomplish by launching two new hour-long blocks of sitcoms? Has it worked yet for them?

They didn't bother breaking up any of their Thursday shows. 30 Rock is in its final season and will lead off the night? How do you honestly lead the night with a show that won't be around by January? I really don't see any reason here why NBC will turn things around in the Fall. It's not going to get better.

Is it just me or do NBC's descriptions of each pilot read like this: "And if you don't like that one, how about this?"

Maybe I'm too hard on NBC. But really, they're so screwed.

I hate that Community is on Friday... but I'm a fan of Whitney. So getting those back to back will be nice.

I know it is by far cheaper to make, but really Harry's Law would probably have done better at Thursday at 10 then Rock Center.

Don't like Smash at midseason.

Smash is a dead show walking, doesn't matter whether it dies in Spring or Fall

Really. NBC tried and NBC failed with Smash. Doesn't help that Glee was a good year into its own freefall before NBC greenlit Smash. It was doomed from the start.

I disagree that it was doomed from the start. In fact, if it had been at all successful creatively, it would have been fine but it's been a disaster all season.

You can be CBS bad and people don't care but this is the kind of bad that pleases nobody.

Yeah, Smash pretty much sucks. Let's be honest. It has never come close to living up to its potential.

NBC's best drama is absolutely Parenthood and that has been the case for several seasons now, imo.
