Because it drew casual audiences. Walk-up sales were huge. WOM is insane with everyone watching it, which means even more casual audiences will be drawn into seeing it. Good news for TDKR considering the trailer is attached.

Re: The Dark Knight Rises OW Record Club of FUCK 3D
avengers is clearly more family friendly than TDKR. TDKR will be more appealing to older crowds, though. But both have mass appeal to both sides. I too expect the dailies to give TDKR the victory in domestic total, but opening weekend will quite the battle.
Midnights, screen count, and pre sales all need to be pumped to the absolute max.

With a 4% increase from TDK every year, this would land at 25.43M tickets. That would be just around 215M.

Re: The Dark Knight Rises OW Record Club of FUCK 3D
This thread will be the most exciting for the rest of this summer.
This is definitely the biggest question now. And I'm sure everyone at WB is racing to figure out how to guarantee TDKR the record.
I think the film needs a $20-30m bigger Friday as a cushion because Avengers' Sat and esp. Sunday were just out of this world.
So $100-110m opening day.

So $100-110m opening day. Indeed, and I don't think it's unreasonable to think most, if not all of that cushion will come from midnights (though I personally feel Rises can get ~$65m in day business on Friday, too) Demand is going to be extremely high for them; those IMAX midnight showings that went on sale a few months ago sold out immediately. I'm really curious if this can reclaim the Sunday record too. If Avengers can drop 18% in May, a <5% decline could be in store for Rises if the film itself really delivers.

Re: The Dark Knight Rises OW Record Club of FUCK 3D
I've been out of the box office loops for a good while now, so I don't know much about how midnights have been doing.
What's the record? Is it Harry Potter?
Can TDKR realistically get $50-60m in midnights? $50m I think will give it the record. $40m and who knows.
Btw, I can't believe I'm typing these numbers. What the fuck is going on with this year? Crazy.

Yeah, contrary to everyone else, TA's OW has boosted my confidence for TDKR, not diminished it. Sunday record is definitely within the realm of possibility

Re: The Dark Knight Rises OW Record Club of FUCK 3D
Psh, fuck it. I bet Nolan knew all along this would happen. Soon enough, the Dark Knight will RISE to the top of the record books! When TDKR smokes the Avengers by a good 15 million, without 3-D, everybody here will go banasas! Midnights: 50 million Friday: 60 million: Saturday: 65 million Sunday: 55 million opening weekend: 230 million. Yes, there is a storm coming, indeed. When your records are in ASHES, you will have my permission to die.

What's the record? Is it Harry Potter? The record is currently $43.5m held by Deathly Hallows 2, the last two Twilight films have also gotten >$30m. Here is the list of midnights: http://worldofkj.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=63396Quote: Can TDKR realistically get $50-60m in midnights? $50m I think will give it the record. $40m and who knows.
Btw, I can't believe I'm typing these numbers. What the fuck is going on with this year? Crazy. It really depends on how many theaters give it midnights. 4,200+ could be enough to beat Potter. And this year has been crazy since the goddamn beginning, when The Devil Inside exploded.

Re: The Dark Knight Rises OW Record Club of FUCK 3D
Oh wow, Harry managed $43.5m? Fucking insane. Haha.
Well, if WB wants the record, they have to go all out on midnights.
I think we must assume minimum $50m in midnights for TDKR for the record. My sense is, midnights + Friday day gross = half of weekend total.

Though to be fair, the drop from Friday + Midnights to Saturday is -33.7%, which is a tad bit larger. And with a Saturday that big, the Sunday drop will be softened.

Re: The Dark Knight Rises OW Record Club of FUCK 3D
What would be the max drops?
Take a $100m opening day, incl. midnights. 40% off Sat, 15% off Sun, that gives it a $211m opening.
Keep going back to that $100m opening day.

Re: The Dark Knight Rises OW Record Club of FUCK 3D
I'm not certain about a $100 million OD. If it does that, I see it breaking or coming near 220M for the weekend.
Nor do I see over 35M for midnights
