Re: The Dark Knight Rises $200+ million OW Club
My big issue with TDKR is that people seem to be talking about The Avengers more as the buzzed movie. By this time in 2008, everyone was talking about TDK as the movie of the summer, and trying to get any piece of information about it. The Avengers trailer was what people were talking about this week.
I'm sure it will still do exceptionally well, but TDK seemed like a whole other ball game for Batman movies...

Sure you havent read articles lately, but it's obvious to see a little bit of buzz around the avengers, its second trailer was just released when the new trailer of TDKR comes out in May, it will surely overshadow the avengers film itself

Re: The Dark Knight Rises $200+ million OW Club
But see that's the big difference. TDK was getting attention practically every week from Jan - July. TDKR will still probably do $500 m +, but the buzz just isn't close to TDK right now IMO. Understandably, HL had a lot to do with that but it just doesn't feel like it did in 2008...

I definitely remember the buzz for The Dark Knight not REALLY taking off until around May. I expect the same thing this time around.

Re: The Dark Knight Rises $200+ million OW Club
TDKR buzz has been there since the TDK opened. At this point what's new to buzz about?!?!?! Remember before we knew the casting, the story, the title how every little info spread like fire and had internet talking about it for weeks?
Now EVERYBODY knows when it comes out. They're just waiting to see it. Nothing new to buzz about.
The Avengers probably currently have more buzz than the TDKR (and the biggest buzzing I see for The Avengers is how terrible the new poster is), but overall The Avengers will never match the buzz TDKR had throughout the years.

Re: The Dark Knight Rises $200+ million OW Club
What TDKR had was the golden negative (or sad) buzz months in advance of the great (good news) buzz. Titanic also had this. It definitely helps.
However, the good will from the last two films and the following Nolan has built around himself and the fanbase will keep TDKR up there close enough to TDK in terms of total gross.

Re: The Dark Knight Rises $200+ million OW Club
I don't think demand will be anywhere near what it was for TDK. I'm predicting $160m. That being said, TDK is proof that $200m is possible in 2012. Its per screen average was $17,600 on 9,000 screens in 2008. Potter 8 was on 11,000 screens. Even TDK's PSA unadjusted for inflation would be $193.8m on 11,000 screens. Adjusted for inflation it's close to $215m. Just gives you an idea of how absolutely monstrous that movie really was.

Re: The Dark Knight Rises $200+ million OW Club
Looking at all these adjusted numbers are definitely making this seem a lot more possible.
Pirates 2's adjusted, midnightless Friday ($56 million) + Spider-Man's adjusted Saturday ($58.7 million) + TDK's adjusted Sunday ($47.5 million) would be $162.2 million, WITHOUT midnights. Now, this obviously requires breaking three different ticket sales records, which really requires a super-duper perfect storm of perfection, but...it's possible.
I think I'm in the $185-195 million range, so for now I'm out. For now.
