Fans went to see the first Spider-man, despite using a villain who was no more famous outside of comics than Bane was, and at this point, Batman is more popular in general than Spider-man.

Marion Cotillard is gorgeous too, but I don't think she has enough of the look to pull it off. Anne has that very sultry and mysterious swag going, while Cotillard is more laid back and classy.
