Post Re: 2011 NFL Discussion
What's up with all these huge comebacks so far this season?

To me, the Cowboys defeat is the biggest choke of the season thus far, worse than say Patriots blowing their lead against the Bills. You are at home, you have a very good defense (much better than Patriots'), and you're facing an offense that's not really explosive; you simply can't lose the game. You have to know your opponent in that you're not facing Patroits/Packers/Saints where you can't sit on a big lead; in this case, even if you just run each down and take 2.5 minutes off the clock each time and punt away, the chance of Lions going down the field 4 times to score, 3 of which have to be touchdowns, in 1.75 quarters is very small. Even when you throw, you need to know being conservative is the key even though you have been picking their defense apart up to that point. Managing the game to win.

I guess in the end, a 2-2 record is a fair reflection of the Cowboys, as they could have easily been 4-0 or 0-4.

:er:

Calvin Johnson is pretty much playing better than anyone else in the league right now. He can go off at any time. Not sure how you can say they're not explosive.

Because their quarterback is mediocre and unproven, unlike those teams. Johnson has been with the team for a few years, and their offense has never ranked high in the league because of their quarterback and running game, and they certainly don't strike fear in opponent comparing Patriots/Saints/Packers. With those teams, even as a fan, you sort of think in the back your mind that "let's score some more points because who know they could do in the 4th quarter." Yes, Lions is getting better now and believe they can comeback after doing it against Vikings, but this is still a situation where you should simply let them earn it instead of giving easy points to them; as a fan, I would be very content to say just playing conservative and let's see what they can do.

Looking at their schedule, Lions could be 8-0 heading into their bye week. Their second half is going to be tough though.

That ridiculously hard schedule NE got stuck with doesn't look so bad anymore. Last 12 games are "winnable". Going TO Philly might be tough, though.

Al Davis is... dead...

Yahoo! Sports wrote:
Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis dead at 82
By JOSH DUBOW, AP Sports Writer
1 hour, 23 minutes ago

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP)—Al Davis, the renegade owner of the Oakland Raiders who bucked NFL authority while exhorting his silver-and-black team to “Just win, baby!,” died Saturday. He was 82.

The Hall of Famer died at his home in Oakland, the team said. The cause of death was not immediately disclosed.

Davis was one of the most important figures in NFL history—a rebel with a subpoena. That was most evident during the 1980s when he went to court—and won — for the right to move his team from Oakland to Los Angeles. Even after he moved the Raiders back to the Bay Area in 1995, he sued for $1.2 billion to establish that he still owned the rights to the L.A. market.

It was Davis’ willingness to take on the establishment that helped turn the NFL into money-making giant that it is—the most successful sports league in American history.

“Al Davis’s passion for football and his influence on the game were extraordinary,” commissioner Roger Goodell said. “He defined the Raiders and contributed to pro football at every level. The respect he commanded was evident in the way that people listened carefully every time he spoke. He is a true legend of the game whose impact and legacy will forever be part of the NFL.”

But Davis was hardly an NFL company man.

Not in the way he dressed—usually satin running suits, one white, one black, and the occasional black suit, black shirt and silver tie. Not in the way he wore his hair—slicked back with a ’50s duck-tail. Not in the way he talked — Brooklynese with Southern inflection. Not in the way he does business—on his own terms, always on his own terms.

Elected in 1992 to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Davis was a trailblazer. He hired the first black head coach of the modern era—Art Shell in 1988. He hired the first Latino coach, Tom Flores; and the first woman CEO, Amy Trask. And he was infallibly loyal to his players and officials: to be a Raider was to be a Raider for life.

Coach Hue Jackson told the team of Davis’ death at a meeting in Houston on Saturday morning.

RIP... Now its the time to build a great organization again.

They die in 3's. First Steve Jobs & now Al Davis. Who will be the third?
