That's incredible, solid and awful, respectively. Oh and Straw Dogs gets an "awful" as well.

Contagion appears to have held on quite well despite the new competition.

Have no idea how much it helped, but Contagion had a ton of free media this week due to news stories about its subject matter.

Lol, I was so off on Lion King. I think I predicted like $10 million weekend total in the Derby, it almost got that opening day!

Very impressive. It's obviously a movie that parents love to bring their kids to time and time again. I remember seeing it like 3 times in the theater when I was 6.

Looks like I Don't Know How She Does It won't even beat Did You Hear About the Morgan's opening weekend (like $5 million). Long titles, boring plots, Parker needs more appealing material if she wants to do anything else but Sex and the City.

The Lion King almost has a chance at breaking the September record, but should fall short with $33m, using the IMs of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and TS re-release as comparisions; simply incredible.

So there's a decent chance that Lion King breaks into the top ten all time now? Jesus.

Holy shit. The Lion King did insane. This re-release was a great idea.

Very solid for Drive. Though it will get to no more than 25 Million total, which is still fine for a movie like this.

Poor Sarah Jessica Parker. :( I Don't Know How She Does It is a total bomb.

Straw Dogs definitely disappointed too. Doesn't help that Drive was also targeting males.

OMG! at those TLK 3D numbers. I felt it could breakout due to the solid buzz, but holy shit I still didn't expect $30M big. I guess this proves that the movie did build up a very strong fanbase over the years which should be no suprise since most consider it to be the best Disney movie ever, but seeing how shitty 3D movies are doing now it's great to see something worthy of the price tag finally benefiting. Solid for Drive aswell, but it looks like mainstream audiences still aren't ready to accept indie films as general entertainment. I know BS broke out HUGE last year, but that movie seemed to have alot more going for it than your average indie film.

With an A Cinemascore and a low opening weekend I expected Warrior to hold really well this weekend. A 49% Friday drop is disappointing. Can't say I care too much though as I have no interest in the movie.

Yep it's sad at how badly it's doing considering all the positive buzz, but there is just too much competition out there this month. Unfortunatly it had to be the first real casuality of the awful movie scheduling studios have put out this year, but hopefully it does alot better on dvd.

I would be very happy if Lion King does well enough next weekend to where Shrek 2 has a chance of being dethroned.

Wow at The Lion King. Like I thought maybe $15m was possible, but $30m+? I wish it broke the record for September. That would have been epic.

but if not, let's leave that mission to Monsters University or The Incredibles 2

If Toy Story 3 couldn't, those two won't either.

Great for the TLK re-release. I remember watching it in theater with my sister, powerful opening (Circle of Life). Immediately bought the soundtrack afterwards. Strangely, haven't watched it since...

Why was everyone lowballing The Lion King? Nostalgia for a decent animated pic is stronger than ever after those crappy animals and vehicles.

As I have said in the other thread, The Lion King breaking out was also very much the result of the marketplace being devoid of any family-oriented competition. Spy Kids will be the 2nd-highest grossing kids flick this weekend and it'll varely make $1 million.

On the other hand, competition is the very reason why Warrior didn't hold better. It is very adult male-oriented and these crowds went to Drive this weekend.

Oh and Contagion is the winner among the holdovers, IMO. It could drop less than 40% this weekend which definitely means an $80+ million total, I'd say.

I am impressed by Contagion but it was surely helped by all of the talk shows talking about it this week. Every one I tuned into on Monday was talking about it it seemed.

And Lion King was surely helped by a lack of kids films. Disney should re-release classics when competition for family audiences is low at least once a year. This will surely increase sales when Lion King is released on DVD/Blu-ray October 4th.
