Just downloaded Homeland, I've heard really good things and Claire Danes + Damien Lewis is an epic combo

Whitney
4/10

Based on the previews I expected a total wreck. Turns out it's not the worst thing that was put out there as I expected it to be. Whitney is not an actress and it's a painfully obvious fact. It also doesn't help that the guy who plays her boyfriend is acting as if he's in an SNL sketch. Does he have to put on a smile (look at me how funny I am!) after everything he says. It look so unnatural. I liked the completely unexpected appearance of Jane Kaczmarek. She was good.

I don't see much potential in this one. But then again it looked horrible and it turned out to be not THAT horrible. So who knows...

TV Pilots Scorecard so far:

8/10
01. Ringer

6/10
02. The Secret Circle

5/10
03. Up All Night

4/10
04. Whitney
05. Free Agents

Homeland - Straight A. Probably one of the best 5 pilots I've seen for a show - Only the Wire, Mad Men, and Breaking Bad were more promising out of the gate, to me

Definitely check out "Person of Interest" "The River" and "Alcatraz." I'd also give "Once Upon A Time" a chance.

Thanks for the recommendations, I'll check those out. Also, Grimm looks interesting.

Any more?

RIGHT?! It has to be the unbelievable hatred that set my expectations rock bottom.

Person of Interest is getting some rather average first reviews. And usually the first batch ends up as being the most positive one. Isn't this supposed to be the highest testing CBS drama pilot ever??? WTF???

CBS audience that love high rated shows like NCIS, Criminal Mind and Mentalist does not equal the average tv latte drinking tv blogger. Actually Im more surprised that alot of tv shows that were "supposedly good" got pretty much mixed reviews like Ringer and Pan-Am. No show this fall has even reached 70 save for surprisingly Revenge

So far so good. Everything I'm planning on keeping up with. The Secret Circle was decent (I knew nothing about it) but it has a lot of potential, IMO.

2 Broke Girls
8/10
Currently THE surprise of the season. Great characters with actors already very comfortable in their roles. Funny and charming plot. Also the other surprise is that Whitney Cummings (from the show Whitney) is one of the co-creators... That fact alone makes the fact that the show is funny even funnier.

The Playboy Club
6/10
Passable entertainment. The plot isn't as juicy as I would have liked it, but it could get there. If the show doesn't get removed from the schedule that is.

So glad 2 Broke Girls and New Girl ended up being hilarious. It's nice to have some new great comedy as some of the other classics are winding down (30 Rock, The Office).

How to Be a Gentleman: D+

I had zero interest in this show until I found out it starred David Hornsby (Rickety Cricket on It's Always Sunny...), also serving as creator, the Sunny boys were consulting producers and Mary Lynn Rajskub was in the main cast. But the pilot proved you can have all the right ingredients and still make a shit show.

Hornsby is channeling a weird mixture of Niles Crane and Sheldon from TBBT, neither the endearing snob like Niles nor the annoying nerd like Sheldon. Kevin Dillon is literally playing Johnny Drama. Give him a different name all you want, but it's Drama on a sitcom. Dave Foley basically plays himself, and he continues to age poorly. Then there's Mary Lynn Rajskub in a cute but empty role, wasting her talents on a show with little future for her or for itself.

The comedy is thin, based entirely on an Odd Couple-esque relationship between "gentleman" Hornsby and "manly man" Dillon. Seemingly, there will be limitless comedy in a nice guy teaching a macho man how to be polite, and a macho man teaching a nice guy how to be tough. It kind of shocks me that a fairly talented mind behind many It's Always Sunny episodes could churn out something so formulaic. There is no room for surprises down the road, it's just the comedy of the opposites becoming friends. Can't say I have any desire to revisit it down the road. CBS struck out big on this one. Should've just kept Shit My Dad Says.

Suburgatory: C+

Means Girls meets Easy A. Sort of. Jane Levy is definitely someone trying their darndest to get an Emma Stone type on the small screen, and she's halfway there. And that's a big compliment because no one matches Emma's awesomeness, but Levy is fun as the normal girl in the la-la world of suburbia. Jeremy Sisto is equally appealing as the dad, although he looks slightly out of place. Kind of like if Vincent D'Onofrio did a sitcom. It would work, surely, but still looks strange.

It's the rest that didn't agree with me. It feels overly cartoonish at times. I get that they're trying to make fun of the blonde, plastic moms that populate America, but that doesn't mean I want to see them every week in the same cartoon-y way. The pilot was quirky, but maybe too quirky and not so funny? I don't know. It's one of those shows that may take a few episodes to develop. Like Up All Night, the potential is high, but the pilot was only slightly better than meh.

Pilot Roundup
New Girl: A- (rewatched the pilot and loved it even more)
2 Broke Girls: B+
Ringer: B+
Revenge: B+
Person of Interest: B
Prime Suspect: B-
Suburgatory: C+
The Secret Circle: C+
Up All Night: C+ (rewatched the pilot and it really left me wanting so much more)
Whitney: C
The Playboy Club: C-
How to Be a Gentleman: D+
Free Agents: F

What a weird year for pilots (at least for me), where the good ones are doing well, the bad ones are tanking and the so-so ones are doing so-so.

Post Re: Rate the Pilots!
Revenge: B+

Really dug this a lot more than I expected. I was a little wary at first, but the more it progressed, the more I became invested. I'm not sure why I should care about Emily Thorne/Amanda Clarke, but I do. Maybe it's Emily VanCamp's steely eyed expression that sells it. Either way, I'll be catching up on the rest soon.

----------------------

Prime Suspect: C+

For a crime drama, it's decent yet too familiar. Maria Bello sells it well, but not well enough to distinguish this show from the glut of other crime shows. And the grit of the pilot felt forced, kind of like "Hey, we washed out all the colors and they all have New York accents, it must be a gritty crime show." Still, not a terrible show. And I can't say if it's a worthy adaptation of the UK counterpart. I'm sure Maria Bello pales in comparison to Helen Mirren.

----------------------

Person of Interest: B

A higher class of crime drama. It hooked me with the action, especially Caviezel's ass-kickery, as well as Michael Emerson basically doing Benjamin Linus in a nice suit. It worked well, but it feels formulaic. I can't say I care about Caviezel's past life. Can't say I care to see people getting saved from bloody murder every week. But based solely on the pilot, it was good.

-------------------

The Playboy Club: C-

After finishing the pilot, I can honestly say it could've been a great show for HBO or Showtime. Heck, even AMC. But that's if more attention was placed on the Bunnies. Amber Heard was charming in a "I'm scantily clad on stage, but I'm young and naive too" kind of way. The rest is a bore. The opening minutes "twist" should've came at the end, Eddie Cibrian is channeling Jon Hamm in the worst way imaginable and, of course, it's cancelled. It's all moot.
