 Saturday Night Live: Season 36
So I have not watched a full SNL episode since Amy Adams hosted in the Strike Season of SNL two years ago. Haven't felt the need to watch an episode.
But I thought I'd give the show a chance this season and watched the premiere. I actually found it... funny! A few too many cameos, but all in all a good show.
Bryan Cranston hosts this week. Future hosts are rumored to be Jane Lynch next week, as well as Emma Stone and Jon Hamm in late October.
So, did anyone else watch?

Re: Saturday Night Live: Season 36
I did watch that premiere so see the new people and what not.
I actually enjoyed all the cameos. I thought Amy Poehler was funny. I liked the guy who did the Will Smith impression. That was good. Unfortunately, I can't remember much more since it's Friday now. I'm sorry.
I thought Katy Perry was meh. I know she can sing but it didn't sound that great. Good songs though.
I will check it out again.

Re: Saturday Night Live: Season 36
The second episode sucked, except surprisingly for the first Kanye West music number which I thought was excellent (though I wish they had shown it was physically placed in the studio by swinging the camera over to that all white set).

Re: Saturday Night Live: Season 36
I thought the second ep had its moments, but yeah, it wasn't anywhere near as good as the first.
I completely agree on Kanye. Visually his performances were a step above anything else I've seen on SNL to date.

Re: Saturday Night Live: Season 36
I watched up to Kanye's first performance. Bryan Cranston is doing what he can so far, but they gave him crap. And is it a prerequisite now that the cast has to perform in each sketch by, not facing each other, but facing the cue cards? No one can do the show without reading each line. Kristen Wiig is great, but the entire Shana sketch, she was just facing her cue cards, while Kenan, Andy and the new guy were facing their cue cards. Maybe I'm romanticizing the past, but I don't think the originals did that, or the Phil Hartman era cast. I think they did their best to make it look natural.
And why is Kenan Thompson still on the show? He does the same characters all the time. And he has a smug delivery with every performance, like he thinks he's the funniest guy there.
Now I know why I stopped watching SNL. But this time, there are a few bright spots on the show (I haven't seen much of her, but I like Abby Elliot).

Don't remember much from the 2nd episode. I wasn't really excited about any of the skits and Cranston ending up being a bit disappointing.

He kinda was, but I do blame the subpar writing. I didn't realize that What Up With That? is a recurring sketch. Is it popular or something? It's a cute idea on its own, but apparently it's the same every time? Jason Sudeikis's over-excited dancing is the only funny part.

I'd hate for them to leave. They are the highlights.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to tonight with Jane Lynch hosting.

Re: Saturday Night Live: Season 36
Not for nothin', but I kind of figured it would be natural to have Jane Lynch sing during her monologue, since SNL does love their musical monologues. Then I remembered Bryan Cranston sang last week, so I knew SNL couldn't possibly be that lazy to do it again. But they did! Thank god Jane was good, but she deserved more creative writing.
I'm only halfway through and there have been a few laughs so far. A step above last week.

Re: Saturday Night Live: Season 36
Loved the Ronnie and Clyde music video (plus previously) - - that Rihanna chick seems so effortlessly talented! Also the two Back to the Future 25th Anniversary auditions segments were fun, and even though I've never seen John Hamm anywhere but his two SNL appearances and his underwhelming turn in The Town, the guy is sure talented and has a knack for comedy.

First episode of the season where the veterans did something worth a damn compared to the new guys. Best show of the year last night. That's not saying much, but it was good. The BTTF auditions was the best part of the show. And that new guy who's done Denzel and Eddie Murphy...they need to find more things for him to do. Those two impressions were fucking perfect.

Yeah his impersonation of Denzel,Will & Eddie are spot on. Hopefully he gets more screen time.

I'm guessing it's awkward enough backstage, given that Fred Armisen plays Obama. At least it's not as bad as when Will Ferrell left, and they went through Darrell Hammond, Chris Parnell and Will Forte to play Bush.

Mr. Magnus wrote: But everyone hates Armisen as Obama except perhaps Lorne and Armisen. Oh I know. And how long will Armisen be with SNL? ... well, that's not the best question to ask. Outside of SNL, all he does is play small parts in movies where he plays oddball characters.

What'chu talkin' about, Willis?Fred Armisen does an absolutely spot-on Obama impression - - the vocal cadences are uncanny and his look is perfect, right down to the fact that he's white just like Obama. I love when he teams up with Dwayne Johnson to do the "The Rock Obama" sketches.
