 Re: Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics
I think Magnus is right. If the US actually were to reach the soccer WC final it certainly would be quite a big deal.
But that won't happen, so discussion is rather futile.

I think this has been a good or great Olympics for everyone except Russia and Austria. Thanks Vancouver, you didn't fuck up

 Re: Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics
Games have elevated national pride and national unity to heights not seen in decades.
I have seen such patriotism in the longest time in the country. What most say as "American", is a feeling being shared by most now.
Even the French Canadians are getting into it.
Games are a roaring success in Canada by a mile.

 Re: Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics
Yeah, and nice as it is, I'd like it to dissipate a bit. Patriotism is a disease. Look where it has lead America. I think we'll be back more or less to our old ways. Canadians are too sensible to make too much of this. But for now CANADA FUCK YEAH

 Re: Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics
I side with Box here. Even if U.S. wins World Cup final, it will be the biggest deal for about a week, then a large percentage of the population will care about soccer again for the next four years. It's the same with Olympics. Yes, people tune in every four years, and Phelps could become one of the best known people in the mean time, but it's not sustained like football in Europe or hockey in Canada, where people are crazy about it every year with the leagues and all the championships. In that sense, it's quite different. Miracle on Ice is a singular event that could be relived forever, but the impact of what it means to the country is just different from say Brazil winning WC, even when the football-crazy nation is the favorite going in each time.

 Re: Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics
I wonder (hope?) if the excitement of the gold-medal game will improve the viewership of the sport at all in the States. I mean, not all games are like that, but they're always more exciting than fucking baseball.

I thought it would be going in, and such exciting game simply adds to the degree that it could affect the box office, although I don't think it will match the effect of NFC championship since Canada has a smaller population. Canada's box office, however, could see a dive exceeding the impact of Superbowl in the U.S.

 Re: Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics
What an incredible finish to the Olympics for Canada!! An incredible golden hockey moment to top of a golden Olympics. It's funny, as much as an empty netter at the end to make it 3-1 would have made the win easy and "stress" free for me (you should have heard me swearing when the US tied it), the tying of the game with only 25 seconds left and the incredible overtime win by a player who is THE great Canadian hockey player right now, all on Canadian soil with thousands of Canadian fans roaring in the background, really made the game extra special. Moreover, it topped off an Olympics that overall were extremely successful for Canadians. We didn't just win the hockey gold, we won gold everywhere. Fourteen gold medal wins is the most in a single Winter Olympics ever!! Oh, Canada!!! Stephen Brunt wrote/made a video essay about the Olympics for Canada that I really love: http://www.ctvolympics.ca/video/index.h ... 9493947e9#Peace, Mike

 Re: Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics
Canadian ratings are on and they are epic.
16.5 million Canadians watched the game from starting to end while a huge 26.5 million were watching the game overall or 80% of the population.

I'm sure every single market in Canada would be above Buffalo.

So 32.6% of the households with TVs in Buffalo were watching the game. It may not sound like a lot, but keep in mind on a national scale even 10.0 rating is pretty big nowadays.

 Re: Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics
omg, there is NO question that all cities and towns in canada had 50% of their viewers tuned in.
LOOK: I didn't watch the game. But I saw parts of it. Why? Because I was stupid enough to schedule a meeting with a friend during the game time. But, we were at the mall. And guess what? They had a large number of tv screens showing the game, either at the centre of the mall or in different enclaves between stores. In some stores, you had the TVs that were for sale showing the game. Everywhere, people had gathered to watch. That's how I found out that Canada had scored (people shouted excitedly). Also, I found out Canada scored a 2nd goal because one of the employees from the store in front of which we were sitting ran out and gave everyone an update. And I found out the US had scored one goal because I saw the score on the TV screen at the mall intercourse. I found out about the 2nd goal from a young man who told me the news dejectedly because he had just seen it on a TV screen beside the bookstore we had just left. And I found out Canada had won because my friend called and told me on my way home on the bus.
I actually love the way it turned out, the fact that I got to experience the game through other people, most of them total strangers. It proved to me just how great an effect these games have had on Canadians and Canada. Great stuff, really.

 Re: Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics
lol, when Crosby scored, in my suburban subdivision, you had people dancing outside and people putting on their car alarms.
I tried to look for some old fireworks, but that was an epic fail. Have some fun, Canadians as a whole are reserved, who knows when is the next time we can go crazy?
