Congrats Canada! What a second week you have had.

Tomorrow's TV rating is going to be huge. Haven't really looked at the data, but possibly 30m+ viewers?

20m is impossible. You can't have 2/3rds of the whole country watching a game. I'd put it at 15m at most, but maybe 13.5-14m.

If Canada doesnt win today.....ti will declare war to USA.

The sad thing is IF Canada does win.....everybody in Canada will only remember that gold medal. And the other 13 can go and cry in the corner.

"Hey dude I won also Gold in Vancouver"
"Wow yeah Vancouver our Hockey Boys.....Yeah.Yes. Who the fuck are you again?"

So, why does everyone hate Crosby (especially)? I know nothing of this hockey of which you speak.

One of the best hockey games of all time. :noway:

This will be a historic moment in Canadian history.

Perhaps one of the biggest national unity events in the longest time.

Americans may says, Its only Hockey, but the whole country, Vancouver to Newfoundland, Toronto to the North pole is celebrating... :funny: :funny:

I swear to God, when OT was on there was hardly a car on the highways (checking the local channel), the whole country was glued...

I would imagine 25+ million were watching the end.

I was at Yorkdale Mall during the game and they had TV screens set up and people just stopped and watched. Great moment of togetherness.

I think only countries like Germany, Italy, and Brazil with their obsession with football can understand the magnitude of the event. Americans don't really have a comparative event. This is several times the magnitude of the Super Bowl, which after all happens every year.

If we got to the final, they would.

Americans love champions. The problem with soccer is that we suck compared to everyone else, thus we don't care. But when we produce champions, we adore them just as much as everyone else, if not more.

Hell, we don't give a shit about cycling AT ALL, yet Lance Armstrong is one of the most famous people in America.

I wouldn't say that Lance Armstrong is among the top 20 most popular athletes in America. How many people even watched the Tour de France here? I mean, sure, being the best at a sport is going to bring you more attention than you'd receive otherwise, but it's not enough to single-handedly elevate a sport into significant popularity. Hockey isn't even that popular in the U.S. Football/Baseball are really the only ones that can bring in big ratings.

Eh, I think if American men's soccer went to the World Cup final it'd be similar. There was a lot of bonding over the women's final in 1999 (though it helped that it was in America when it happen). And that was women's! It wouldn't be as heart-breaking if we lost that final, but if we won, we'd go ape-shit crazy. Mainly cause we probably would be major underdogs in a World Cup final.

Not to mention, the 1980 Miracle on Ice provided a huge bonding moment that has stayed apart of American lore to this day. The situation is certainly possible.

No it wouldn't. I'm shocked you even think it would. America has NO cultural basis for such a game to have an impact. I've never played hockey, yet it has been a part of my life as a Canadian in a way that no single sport is to Americans. To some, it's american football, to others, it's baseball, to others yet it's basketball, but the US has no single sport that it rallies around the way Canada does around hockey or most of the countries in the world do around football.

Once a football game gets 200-250m viewers in the US, let me know. Because that's how comparatively big this game today was in Canada.

I would. And five years ago, I'd say he was top 5.

Another example is Michael Phelps. I mean, NO ONE watches swimming. Yet he is right now a top 10 most popular athlete. And his Olympic run was a very bonding moment for the country. Everyone saw his races.

Because it was during the Olympics, which has an established platform for American interest. I really don't think Lance Armstrong has ever been as popular as you think (at least as an athlete, the Livestrong/cancer campaign certainly gave him more exposure), not even as popular as Phelps was during '08.

I hate Crosby.

And I was working an art festival today with a radio playing the game and had dozens of people gathered around our stand to listen to the game. Americans care about championships. If football was in the Winter Olympics, I could guarantee 150+ mil viewers for a gold medal game with the US in it.

Hmm. That was the share of TV viewers. For the whole population it was 36%.
