 Re: Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics
Yay Box! I agree, the sport is exciting, and let's go skiing. Canada's gold medal count is surprisingly strong (considering how disappointing the total medal count is for Canada). In 2006 (Canada's best Olympics in terms of medals), Canada won 7 gold, and this year we're already at 6 (with curling and women's hockey yet to come). The US may have over 2 times the amount of total medals as Canada, but Canada is keeping up with the countries at the top in the gold medal count, for now at least. It seems that in terms of actually OWNING the podium (re: Canada's "Own the Podium" program) and winning gold, Canada is doing pretty darn well. Peace, Mike

 Re: Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics
Yeah, the gold count is really impressive, as is the fact that gold now counts for more than half of the total. The irony is that, despite all this talk about the total medal count, the IOC and most of the world actually ranks countries by gold medals. It's just North American that really goes by totals, mostly because Americans like bigger numbers (same reason why the French go by admissions and the US goes by dollar amounts at the box office).
Fingers crossed hockey and curling will give us 4 more gold. Shaky about men's hockey, but the other 3 seem strong at the moment, so yay!

Also, I checked Dutch sites, and the Kramer story is topping the headlines, heh.

 Re: Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics
I think we should also mention Switzerland. 8 medals, but 6 of them gold. Very impressive Olympics for them.

 Re: Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics
CTV just showed footage of Sven's skate. OMG, what an amateurish error, RIDICULOUS. Also, blaming your coach? Not cool, man. Not cool at all.

 Re: Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics
This sums it up... Quote: Ivan Skobrev of Russia, who skated with Kramer and won the silver medal, insisted it is the athlete’s responsibility to negotiate the correct course.
“It is not only about how strong you are,” Skobrev said. “It is how your head is in the race. He made a mistake. That’s his fault.”
And Kramer knows it. What a douche thing for Kramer to say. Shouldn't have been an idiot.

Yuna and Mao have it LOCKED UP BITCH. Gold and silver are already taken. The rest are fighting for the bronze.

 Re: Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics
Canadian Rochette has a medal I think. She is only 2 points behind silver and 6 points ahead of 4th place. To do that after your mother's death. Canada may not reach it medal count, but there are some great stories in these games. Its a fight between silver and Bronze now Box... http://www.vancouver2010.com/olympic-fi ... 201aj.html

 Re: Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics
Rochette's performance was so moving and inspiring. I think the top 3 did all extremely well. I'd give Rochette the performance of the night, just because of all the things she had to face. To have your mother die suddenly three days before and then to dance after that? Incredible.
I hope she keeps steady and goes for the silver. Kim Yun-a has the gold locked, and deserves it.

 Re: Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics
Rochette's choice of music is what made it special.
It was hauntingly beautiful and tragic, it was like a tribute. Also none of the commentators said a word during her performance. Really if she takes the medal (I think she will), it will be the high lite of the games for Canadians thus far.
All the critics think it will between the top 3. Really #2 and #3.

 Re: Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics
Also, she was actually good! I mean, she skated a flawless routine. So it's not like pity marks. The difference between her and #4 is so huge, I can't imagine sympathy just getting here there. She did very well, and deserves her spot.
We've had quite a few highlights so far. Partly because we've had so many gold medals. Let's see about hockey though, LOL.

 Re: Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics
It was not a sympathy score, no person with half a mind can say the other performers below her were better.
It was a conservative routine compared to the top 2 but executed near perfect. Other in 4th place did great rotinues but they messed up on key parts.
Add in the "beautiful haunting" nature of the routine compared to the more upbeat nature of the other ones, It was well ahead of the others apart from the top 2.

 Re: Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics
I don't see Yu Na falling during the free whereas Mao is going to have to have her 2 3a just to compete imo and I think she'll fall on one of them. Should that occur then Joannie will just need to skate clean to earn the silver.
So I'm guessing:
1. Yu Na 2. Joannie 3. Mao 4. Mirai 5. Miki 6. Rachael

 Re: Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics
IMHO the Gold will either go to Canada or Sweden.
I don't think anyone else can match their talent. I don't know why people look past Sweden.
