I even heard that they might try after season. Great so trade him with only 1 year left on contract. And say by some miracle the Jays contend for a playoff spot next year (stop snickering Snack - that's some good alliteration right there) where would that leave them? They still got Halliday. At the very worst they'll try and trade him again next year and he can become a rent-a-player for some team who's got a shot at winning the title. Not panicking and getting something worse than they could get next year was a smart move on their part. They didn't have to trade him this year. Next year they do if the team still isn't going anywhere. Just think with only 1.25 left on his contract and he wanting out of Toronto, this was the time to trade him. Especially with the GM saying that 3 of the 10 offers were really tempting. 3/4 great players would make more of a difference than just having him, IMO. It wasn't 3/4 great players. That was just we were asking for from Philly - They have 3 guys in the top 30 of Baseball America's prospects list and Riccardi asked for them all of them which Philly immediately turned down. As far as I know their counter offer was 1 (Dominic Brown) + filler, and then they got Lee without giving any. Boston was maybe or maybe not willing to deal Buchholtz + filler, again 1 potentially great guy, not 3. 3rd team was probably the Yankees, their top 2 guys in Montero and Hughes were apparantley off limits, they were likely offering Joba if that. LA Dodgers were in talks, but their top 2 guys Kershaw and Billingsley were apparantley off the table which killed it. Texas may have been interested by I don't think Halladay would waive his no trade clause to play there. LA Angels were offering dogshit If there was a package with 3/4 great prospects on the table the deal would've been done. The reason it didn't is teams were only offering 1 + other B/C level prospects at most, with that 1 guy being a top 25ish player, not a top 10 one, and guys who have no chance of ever being near Halladay. Considering we get 2 top 30 picks if Halladay leaves, that alone is not THAT far off from what was being offered.

4:20pm: Jeff Blair of the Globe and Mail reports that Ricciardi was "never moved by a club" to trade Halladay, though two or three teams were serious about acquiring him and ten inquired.

Also as Toronto is like 13 games out of first and Yanks/Red Sox pretty strong, how is Toronto going to be in contention next year? Is there team any different. They probably won't be, but they need a reason to have people keep coming to the Rogers Centre.

After all these trades, I am surprized the Angels made none. Maybe it was the smart to do, considering the amount we might have given up to get these stars. Mabye Scoscia will just displine the starting pitchers to improve them and let the offense carry the team. Basically, he is saying that the team is right as it is (Good faith, huh). Based on tonights game, it is all about the offense.

Well, he did help us offensively a bit, but it was not enough to get past the Sox. After losing him, Mike had faith in Kendry Morales, who was only a utility player last year, got his first stint this season as the full time first baseman, but boy did it pay off. So far, he is batting almost .300 and has 20 homeruns. With him, who needs Tex, especially since Tex cost well over 20 million, but we have Kendry for mere peanuts.

That's not true, the deal was Buchholz then riccardi's choice of bowden, masterson, or anderson (hardly filler) and then lower level prospects. They only absolute nos going into negotiations were Bard, Kelly, and Westmoreland.

Although their pitching staff is excellent, although that and the duo alone makes them legitimate contenders for the WS appearence, along with the Dodgers and Phillies.

And he could have played it out with those 3 teams. Just got a report on my cell phone about MLB news from MLB. It said Halladay refused to be traded to Texas when they thought they had a trade with him! If true, that seems wierd as why would one want to go to a team in a pennant race. And it would be only for just over a year.Or was Halladay thinking, I don't want to take a chance getting hurt or blowing the big free agency contract that right now he is sure to get after 2010.

Congrats to Bobby Abreu for becoming only the 6th member of the 250, 2000, 1000, 1000, 300 club. Nice to see someone make history with the Angels.

4 hits in 15 innings. The Red Sox deserved that.

I find it weird that the Angels are not doing well against Texas, but yet, some inferior team, known at the Oakland A's (or AAA's as the forum people call them), has no problem beating them. It seems that the A's and Mariners seem to be our best friends against our Texas rivals, but the Angels know now to pound the A's to death.

Re: 2009 Major League Baseball Discussion
Jays let the White Sox take Alex Rios on waivers, for nothing.
fucking hell. If they were going to abandon hope for next year and just go into contract dump/rebuild mode, THEN WHY DIDN'T YOU FUCKING TRADE HALLADAY WHEN HIS VALUE WAS HIGHEST.
And how sad is it that we gave away Rios because 10 million a year until 2012 is too much, while Vernon Wells makes 21 MILLION a year for the next 5 years and is a much worse and older player. Can't the MLB give out steroid exemptions or something for guys who cheated and got paid, then turned shitty when they started testing? Wells' contract is the most disgusting thing I've ever seen. It hasn't even kicked in yet! How can you sign a 120 mil extension for 2010-2015 after you have a good year in like 2006? How retarded does your GM have to be? We were willing to trade Halladay just to dump Wells and get nothing back, and no-one was even remotely interested, not even the Yankees. That's how bad that contract is!

Nice complete game for Ervin Santana. His fastball is coming back after that injury. If this continues, then the Angels will very scary to face (especially since 8 batters are batting .300)
Also, I wonder what kind of suspension Youk will get. At least 5 days for charging the mound I think. Reminds me of a Coco Crisp moment last year.

Yes, according to MLB.com, Kevin did indeed get a 5-game suspension.
Also, my Angels sweep the Rays. Decent MLB debut for Trevor Bell.

Re: 2009 Major League Baseball Discussion
Might be a bit hyperbolic on my part, but Victor Martinez just might have saved the Sox's season last night. And I don't think I've ever seen Francona more animated when Martinez walked back to the dugout after he scored. He knows he got his ass saved after he put Buchholz out there to run for Varitek. Varitek might be slow, but he's ran the bases his entire life. I don't think he would've had a complete mindfuck rounding third like Buchholz did.
