Post Re: Whats the best Star Trek show
Farscape is the one with the muppets right.

Well what shall I say....I starts very slow though I heard I becomes better and better. First season so far is a bit character introducting and sometimes I have the feeling they didnt exactly know where to go with the show.......though the (sometimes very very) wierd humour saves it so far.

Well I will give it chance after season one cause folks say it becomes better with each season and the story arc starts really developing with end of season one.

I saw two seasons of Farscape. It has its moments, but it never fully clicks. I'll eventually finish the series.

Post Re: Whats the best Star Trek show
Here's an interesting article on two people's project to watch and rate the first season of the original series of Star Trek (TOS). It is well written and insightful, and it reminds me that it is almost time for me to go back to the source myself...

Here's a sample:

Quote:
Torie’s final thoughts on Season 1:

As I mentioned in my introduction, this is more accurately a first watch for me, and I didn’t really know what to expect from the series. When Eugene invited me to play along, I was skeptical. I’m a Next Gen girl—I like diplomacy, struggles with identity, political unrest, social commentary. What has the original series got to offer me? Isn’t classic Trek cheesy and silly? Isn’t it a machismo adventure story with our sly hero constantly bedding women and killing aliens? Isn’t it, well, stupid?

Having seen the first season now, I feel cheated by its reputation.

What most surprised me is how fundamentally grown-up the show is. I find that most entertainment today fits into two categories: the juvenile or the gritty. A striking proportion of movies and television now are populated almost exclusively by twenty-somethings, trapped within puerile plot set-ups and driven by entirely superficial concerns and rivalries. Even when they star adults, the character’s struggles are ordinary; the choices are, in the great scheme of things, meaningless. All the SF franchises have gone this direction: young Superman. Young John Connor. Young, dare I say it, Kirk and Spock....

{Edit: They have now completed their rewatch analysis of the complete original series - - here's the TOS index. And they have since gone on to a full rewatch of TNG and are now just beginning their DS9 rewatch!}

Now that I think about it, I've probably never seen the entire run of any of the shows, though I did see most Voyager in first-run from season 3 to the end (My 6-to-11-year-old self loved it, though returning to the early episodes recently left a sour taste in my mouth) and most of TNG through the episodes that my dad recorded on BETA and syndication. I still remember watching "The Best of Both Worlds, Part I" through about 4 different means (BETA copy, a couple different runs in syndication) before FINALLY seeing "Part II" a couple years later. That was soooo maddening. DS9 I caught only parts of, and TOS I recently started catching up on through CBS.com. Still, I would probably consider myself a Trekker, a devotee long before I knew what the hell a Jedi or Wookie was.

I think both TNG and DS9 take some time to get going. TNG didn't hit it's stride until S3 and DS9 took about the same time. As soon as the Dominion were introduced it picked up immensely. The last season was a bit of a disappointment, especially with Jadzia being absent. TNG is more rewatchable, but my favourite Trek episode comes from DS9, and they have the more satisfying two parters.

Voyager had its moments but lots me near the end. Plus, I didn't like Neelix or Chakotay one bit, and they completely ruined the Borg for me.

Enterprise was a waste with only a few good moments, but had the worst finale of the modern treks.

I've only seen one episode of TOS, "The City on the Edge of the Forever" but damn, it was a good one.

The only season that I would go with is the first season. The ones following I liked a few episodes in each season. The first season had the most episodes that I liked. The worst season is the 2nd. That was mostly due with the person that took over Crushers' job as Chief Medical Officer.

It really depends on the person. There's a lot of merits to every series. And Enterprise may be the weakest, but still more solid then most sci fi shows. Keep in mind Voyager and DS9 only exist because TNG did pretty much everything right and both shows took aspects of TNG and expanded on them. You can watch all of them instantly on Netflix. I'd say the best way to do it would be to do them in order.

That's 693 episodes apparently.

Or watch the first two episodes of every series, and which ever one you like the most start there.

Also I'll admit, TNG was the only show I ever watched completely. I have seen all of TOS, and a lot of Enterprise, but never got into Voyager and DS9, but I've still seen maybe 20-30 episodes of each.

Here's a great new article via Slate:

I Boldly Went Where Every Star Trek Movie and TV Show Has Gone Before (Now I can tell you exactly why this franchise is great)

...and even more apropos, and also from the same author:

Matthew Yglesias ranks every Star Trek movie, television series, villain, and crew member

(His rankings are wrong more than they're right - - but still an intriguing ranking.)
