There is no way we are getting a gay President anytime soon.

I don't think Hillary will run for Pres again, so I don't know if another woman can rise to such stature so soon. Nonetheless it will be either a woman or a Latino (in a few generations they'll be the majority). Indian won't happen for a few generations if at all (chinese-american or japanese-american more likely). And as for an openly gay president I don't think it will happen in any of our lifetimes.

Hillary was the females best shot.

They probably said the same thing about black presidents forty years ago. Change is slow, but it ain't that slow.

In historical terms, we're probably still at the end of the 1800's in terms of civil rights for gays, with one whole political party and about half the population of people flatly rejecting their having any equality at all and regarding them as morally depraved.

That's a big change to overcome. I think it will happen eventually, but not soon.

On a side note, I wonder if we'll ever have a bearded president again, or a bachelor.

Who the fuck cares? I want the best qualified person, period. Obama's win had nothing to do with him being black.

I agree that it didn't have to do with him being black. But I also don't think it had to do with him being the most qualified.

Obama became a symbol of, well yes, hope. And that's why he got elected. People weren't voting for the man, they were voting for way more.

Obviously the next barrier will be either a woman or a latino. Openly gay is way more complex. That will take at least several (like 3 or 4 generations) before we may see even a viable candidate.

Oh yes, Clinton was more qualified. Or at least I think she was/is. But who cares, it's done.


I intensely dislike the idea a thread like this propagates, as if people can be cut up into categories and advanced in the eyes of the world by becoming president.

As someone who is even more multi-ethnic than Obama, I obviously disagree. Whenever I break through a ceiling at work (which seems to happen every few months), it's a point of conversation. That's the reality of the world.

I'm guessing we have Black President 2 first. Once you go black, you never go back.

Then probably female. Maybe both at the same time (Condi).

The problem with pretending that race doesn't exist would be to suggest that it's mere coincidence that every single president since the founding was a white dude, instead of entrenched racial and gender bias in the seats of power and among the electorate. And that is profoundly untrue.

I don't think he won because he's black. But I do think that his being black is a significant milestone and should be acknowledged.
