Should break January records easily in the UK

Good to hear. Meet the Fockers should nearly match its domestic total internationally and finish with over $500 million worldwide. Not bad at all.

'Fockers' fly high around world

SYDNEY -- "Sideways" can toast its first international figures and audiences continue to lust after "Closer," but none could beat the star-powered laughs of "Meet the Fockers," which conquered Britain this weekend, according to estimates. "Fockers" had an excellent opening in the United Kingdom of $14.4 million at a wide 458 dates, making it No. 1 with a 52% market share. This is 357% better than "Meet the Parents." In Brazil, the comedy, which stars Robert De Niro, Ben Stiller, Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand, opened at No. 1 with about $1 million and a 32% market share from 184 dates -- 37% up on its predecessor. Overall, "Fockers" is expected to gross approximately $19.9 million this weekend from 20 territories and 1,773 dates. The cume is an estimated $58 million with 32 territories to open next weekend, including Spain. (Bec Smith) FULL STORY

Fockers' UK gross is awesome.

Well, considering the UTTER lack of competiton in Germany (the biggest movie this weekend won't reach 200,000 amdissions here probably which is pretty bad), it'll do great numbers over here, that's for sure.

As far as I know next weekend. This weekend Lemony Snicket (bad marketing and fairly unknown books here), a German comedy (will have decent numbers) and A Very Long Engagement (small theatre count) opened. These are the holdovers, it'll face, as well as Closer in its 4th week, Blade Trinity's third week and The Aviator's third week. Now you can pretty much imagine how weak the competiton is.

Pretty much the same market it opened to in the UK, no strong competition.... Fockers should make a killing.

As i said - this one equalled "Shrek 2" in local preview buisness. Except "2" had a far better date, release time and was during the weekend. So yeah, for "Fockers" to do the same kind of blockbusting on a Thursday is amazing, and was indicative to this kind of opening.

Its a really funny movie which i really enjoyed.

KFH has the opening record in Taiwan as we know (although in Taipei it was narrowly pipped by Spiderman 2), but it looks like it it won't go much higher than 150m TWD in Taipei.....clearly not having the legs of other uber blockbusters.

Surprisingly Phantom of the Opera has been ruling Taiwan the past 3 weeks, and now with big hits on the horizon like Meet The Fockers - KFH will loose theatres very quickly.......

TAIWAN (Taipei) - All-Time Totals (since 1996)

Outside KFH, Hero and HOFDaggers no other Chinese languaged movie has featured highly on the charts.....2003's double hitters Infernal Affairs II and Infernal Affairs 3: End Inferno failed to crack 20m TWD....and last year's HK blockbusters such as New Police Story and Fantasia also failed to make any impression....

Neihboring imports from Japan and SKorea do comparatively better in Taiwan - with Quills (40m TWD), Windtalkers (35m TWD) and Ju-On The Grudge (35m TWD) lighting up the box-office the past couple of years...

FULL INTERNATIONAL WEEKEND REPORT:

Meet the Fockers increased on Meet the Parents by over 400% in its opening in the U.K. last weekend. Fockers grossed a shocking $14,837,008 from 456 screens to easily claim pole position. In the U.S. Fockers topped Parents' opening by 61%, still a remarkable feat, but nothing compared to its debut in the U.K. Meet the Parents clearly developed strong word-of-mouth because improved on its $3.34 million opening by 568%, finishing with $22.3 million. With more word-of-mouth from DVD rentals and sales Meet the Fockers had no where to go but up. It opening was one of the 20 best ever in the U.K. and topped recent comedy hits like Bruce Almighty, Love Actually, and Starsky and Hutch.

Meet the Fockers had two other great starts over the weekend. In Brazil the picture grossed $1,033,868 from 190 screens and Portugal supplied $498,987 from just 58 screens. Its international total shot up to $58,781,335.

Aside from Meet the Fockers' phenomenal premiere in the U.K. the Oscar nominees dominated the international marketplace.

Thanks to 11 Academy Awards nominations The Aviator flew high over the weekend with No. 1 openings in Mexico, Italy, France, and Scandinavia. In Mexico the picture was No. 1 despite stiff competition from openers The Grudge and local title Voces inocentes, grossing $1.215 million from 437 screens. Mexico's opening was 87% of Catch Me If You Can and 42% bigger than A Beautiful Mind. In Italy the Best Picture nominee grossed $2.8 million from 438 prints. France recorded the best start with $3.9 million, topping blockbusters like Signs, The Mummy Returns, and The Passion of the Christ, but falling to beat similar award pictures like Gangs of New York and Saving Private Ryan. In Finland The Aviator narrowly top the chart with a solid $149,924 beginning from 20 screens with Denmark following suit as the Martin Scorcese epic grossed $249,535 from 30 screens.

The nominations also helped The Aviator hold extremely well. In Germany the picture abated just 16% for $4.6 million in two weeks. Spain was off only 20% for $6.2 million in three weeks and the U.K. eased by 31% for $11.1 million in its fifth week in wide release.

Closer, fresh off its two Academy Award nominations, kept opening huge, but had more precipitous drops last weekend. Overall the picture grossed $9,809,007 from 2,294 screens in 27 markets for a $45,130,068 total, eclipsing the domestic total of $33,450,206. It opened in pole position in Australia, grossing $1,251,225 from 157 screens over the four-day weekend for a $1,623,625 total including sneak previews. Closer unseated Meet the Fockers after five weeks at the top and also topped Ray and Sideways' debuts by over 100%. Closer also had an impressive opening in the Netherlands where it grossed $235,791 from 27 screens. It ranked third behind National Treasure and The Aviator.

Its holdovers had no similarity between themselves. In Spain it was off just 27% for a $4,167,832 total, while France tumbled 47% for a $4,982,389 total. In the U.K. it fell 42% in its third week for a $11,028,615 total, but South Africa was off only 27% for a $436,987 total. With 28 markets down, Closer still has Japan, Scandinavia, and South Korea to look forward to.

Sideways had its first two major market openings with superb results, thanks to its 5 nominations. IN Australia the picture grossed a solid $411,260 from 59 screens. Including sneak previews its total shot up to $815,486. It ranked seventh in the market behind Ray's debut. In the U.K. the picture nabbed $656,000 from 72 screens.

Alexander Payne had enormous success with About Schmidt, which grossed $40.8 million in its entirety. Sideways, so far has had two hits and miss compared to Schmidt. In Australia Sideways topped Schmidt's debut, which went on to take $2,615,840. In Greece Sideways will finish a little ahead of Schmidt's $573,117. In the U.K., however, Sideways lacked a wide release to top Schmidt. Schmidt opened on 220 screens, leading to a $6,247,392 finish. To match About Schmidt's $40.8 million total Sideways will need to do very well in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Japan.

Ray expanded into 12 more territories over the weekend, grossing $3,623,606 at 1,176 dates in 22 territories raising the international total to $8,882,760. The weekend highlight was most assuredly Australia's opening of $847,666 at 169 dates. It was No. 4 for the weekend.

Ray also opened in Japan where it grossed $400,005 from 103 screens over the weekend for a fifth place finish. Any opening with a screen average less than $5,000 in Japan usually signals a fast run. In Spain the Oscar contender grossed $360,665 in its debut from 126 screens, ranking eight in the marketplace. Openings elsewhere were moderate and seemed to hint that Ray isn't going to play well outside of the English-speaking markets. Seabiscuit also played poorly in non-English lingo markets . Japan, where it grossed $11.7 million, was its one exception, which is why Seabiscuit had a solid $28.1 million international total. Ray might struggle to reach $25 million.

Holdovers are helping Ray get there, however. In the Germany Ray fell just 27% to $400,497 from 134 screens for a 25-day total of $3,078,536. The production was off 38% in the U.K., where it grossed $539,150 from 223 screens for a 10-day total of $1,969,842. In Italy Ray dropped just 19% to $453,024 from 154 screens for a 10-day tally of $1,245,355.

Ray still has 30 territories to open including Brazil and Mexico next weekend.

Ocean's Twelve held quite well in Japan over the weekend, notching $3.9 million from 510 screens there. Despite falling 29% the picture remained in first place, ahead of opener The Phantom of the Opera and pushed its total to $15.43 million. Overall the start-studded caper amassed $7.4 million from 3,500+ screens in more than 50 countries for a $185 million total. It opens in the U.K. this weekend.

Elektra continued its better-than-U.S.-but-still-not-that-great run overseas with a $5.5 million weekend from 1,721 screens for a $14.4 million total. The picture opened in first place in Spain, grossing $1.9 million from 350 screens. Other No. 1 starts include Thailand's $556,000 from 155 screens, the Philippines' $462,000 on 109, Malaysia's $214,000 on 40, New Zealand's $177,000 on 40, and Indonesia's $142,000 on 52. Elektra also opened in Taiwan, grossing $238,000 on 91 screens, ranking in third place.

The Phantom of the Opera is becoming a topsy-turvy production with hits and misses that follow no rhyme or reason. The fact that it's being handled by a different distributor in almost all markets is the culprit. Last weekend, it was a success in Japan, grossing $3.1 million from 269 screens. That will lead to a $15 million+ gross, which will help it possibly reach the century mark in international receipts. Thanks to a $16.9 million in the U.K. and $11.6 million in South Korea, The Phantom of the Opera already has $61 million in the till. Soft totals like Spain's $3.4 million and Italy's $1.4 million haven't helped.

A Very Long Engagement had some nice debuts in Europe over the weekend leading to a $3 million haul from 748 prints in 19 countries and a $43.9 million total. In Germany the Oscar-nominated production grossed $1.045 million from 244 prints. The opening was very respectable as it was 76% of Amelie and 12% bigger than Big Fish. French films supply the second biggest returns for foreign language pictures in Germany (behind the U.S.) so Engagement's success comes as no surprise.

In Spain the picture grossed a sturdy $586,800 from 121 prints. The result was on par with Amelie and 42% better than Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. In Greece Engagement ranked second with a $302,300 opening from 24 prints. The opening was surprisingly 80% better than Amelie. INTERNATIONAL WEEKEND REPORT JANUARY 28-30

As a number of Oscar nominees sought to cash in on their early laurels, the future-in-laws farce "Meet the Fockers" topped the overseas market with a weekend take of $18.3 million, thanks largely to a gigantic $15.1 million bow in Britain.

The foreign haul for the comedy shot up to $55.6 million, including a $23.9 million contribution from Australia, where it has held the No. 1 position for five out of six weeks.

"The Aviator" the leading Oscar contender with 11 nominations, took in an estimated $13.7 million over the weekend, based on incomplete returns. The Howard Hughes biopic soared to the top in France ($3.9 million), Italy ($2.8 million) and Mexico ($1.2 million). The international tally stands at an estimated $35 million, including $6.2 million from Spain and $4.6 million from Germany.

"Closer" maintained a hot pace, scoring $10.2 million from 28 territories, highlighted by No. 1 entries in Australia ($1.6 million, unseating "Meet the Fockers"), and Taiwan ($207,000). The film's foreign total hit $45.1 million.

"Sideways," with smaller screen counts, appears to be getting off to a good start. A five-day opening in Australia brought in $813,000 from 59 screens with an outstanding $9,000 per screen average, according to 20th Century Fox. The United Kingdom, meanwhile, delivered $656,000 from 72 screens.

The music, however, appeared slower for "Ray," which played to $3.5 million in 20 markets, providing a total to date of $8.8 million. It entered Australia with $850,000 from 180 screens.

"Million Dollar Baby," released only in the United Kingdom to date, has brought in $5.4 million after two weekend sessions and is ready to take off next weekend in Australia, New Zealand, Spain and Greece.

Among non-Oscar films seeking a piece of the overseas pie were domestic dud "Elektra," which seems to be picking up after a slow start, gathering $6.1 million from 19 countries and taking the No. 1 post in a majority of its 12 openings.

The foreign total for "Alexander" rose to $112.5 million after a $4 million weekend in 51 territories.

"Assault on Precinct 13" debuted in the United Kingdom at No. 3 (behind "Fockers" and "Closer"), with $1.4 million.

Among the blockbuster holdovers, "Ocean's Twelve" went up to $185 million after adding $7.4 million from 50 countries; "The Incredibles" advanced to an eye-opening $353.5 million, after a $4.5 million weekend in 46 countries; and "National Treasure" moved up to $135 million after digging up $3.5 million in 41 markets.

"Blade: Trinity" held the No. 1 position in Germany for a second weekend, with $1.9 million for a market total of $7.1 million. The foreign total has reached $48.1 million.

Other updates: "House of Flying Daggers," $74 million; "A Very Long Engagement," $43.9 million; "The Grudge," $49.5 million.

The Grudge stands at over $160 million worldwide and stands a decent chance at crossing $200 million with releases in Germany and Japan still ahead.

Alexander crossed $145 million worldwide and with the Japanese release ahead it'll pass $170 million, maybe even more.

Closer is having an expectedly amazing run overseas. I actually expect it to hit $100 million overseas considering it's doing well in holdover markets and has releases in Russia and Japan ahead of it.

Ray is not douing well in non-English speaking territories, but it'll still pass $100 million worldwide.

Meet the Fockers is showing off amazing numbers everywhere. I expect no less than $560 million worldwide.

The level of Closer's success is really surprising.

Dr. L: I agree on Fockers. It is at $65M with only 2 major markets and 2 mid-majors and some minors. Should get to $300M overseas.

I actually expected the success for Closer in Europe. It has an "European touch" to it and Julia Roberts films are always successful here. I mean Mona Lisa Smile topped the German box-office for three weeks last year. Moreover, Closer came out in UK and Germany to virtually no competition, good reviews and good awards buzz.
