I'm looking forward to seeing Dementieva vs Keothavong, as she's the first female brit to get to the third round since 1991. Also Jankovic vs Zheng should be a great match, i think Zheng stands a pretty good chance.

Jankovic v Zheng turned out to be a very entertaining match. Zheng had a huge nuber of chances in second set but just couldn't manage to take one, such a shame.

Re: The Tennis Thread - U.S. Open '08
omg
I was looking at the end of this thread and suddenly drew a blank as to if either Venus or Serena has won a grand slam this year. That's so shameful.
I didn't even know Roger had fallen to #2 in the world apparently.
How about Roddick last night? Gulbis really had a shot at him. I'm just so sick of Roddick and his damn hat he has to wear every single freaking match. It's beyond annoying for me. I always want him to lose simply because of that.
I didn't learn until later that Blake had escaped past Young. Let's see if Blake can actually do something for once now.

Is this the first time Fish has done anything noteable at a major? Good for him I guess.
Querrey gave a pretty good showing against Nadal.
With Roddick still in too, it's been a pretty good event for the Americans.

Djokovic's fatigue could be an issue I think, he gets tomorrow off then plays 3 in 4 days if he gets to the final. These long matches won't help him.

Re: The Tennis Thread - U.S. Open '08
Davydenko lost, to unseeded Muller. Doesn't make much difference anyways, even in his prime he was too limited to challenge a big gun.
Roger's in a 5 setter, but up 4-1 at the moment.
I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the winner of the presumable Nadal/Murray match takes the tournament.
Dementieva made it to the semis on the women's side... oppurtunity's there to at least make the finals, I don't trust Jankovic in any big match. Elena seems to be pretty hot in all senses of the word since adjusting her serve, too.
Btw, here's the current outlook on the women's points list, updated before the tournament started:
1 Ana Ivanovic Serbia & Montenegro - 3612.0 2 Jelena Jankovic Serbia & Montenegro - 3515.0 3 Serena Williams USA - 3341.0 4 Svetlana Kuznetsova Russia - 3181.0 5 Maria Sharapova Russia - 3131.0 6 Elena Dementieva Russia -3070.0 7 Dinara Safina Russia - 3047.0 8 Venus Williams USA - 2586.0
It'll be even closer at the top after this tournament, Dementieva and Safina will move up, Ivanovic won't drop too much (lost in the 3rd round last year), Serena may move up, but I don't think she can get #1, both her and Jankovic lost in the semis last year and the difference between a win and a SF loss is 110 points, it's not enough. Sharapova lost in the 3rd round last year, she'll still be in sight. Kuznetsova will fall right out of the mix, though.

Roddick's looking pretty sharp. Would love to see him play Federer in the semis for nostalgic value... I miss those beatdowns, while the announcers try to make it seem like he has any shot at all.

I know that's what I'd think would happen.

I'd need a lot of convincing to ever pick Roddick over Fed. Their past meetings are just too gruesome. Thinking about it though, if he beats Djokovic, the announcers will be OUT OF CONTROL.

This match is on so freaking late. It's 2339 central and they aren't even done with the 2nd set yet and it's at least going 4. My goodness.

Nice to see Fed's amazing semifinal streak (18) kept alive. It doesn't seem as flashy when placed next to his other records, but really, who was the last person to make it past like 4? Fucking EIGHTEEN.

Re: The Tennis Thread - U.S. Open '08
poor Roddick can't catch a break I'm glad to see these semis, I think they're clearly the top 4 in the world. I like the evolution of the men's games in the Federer era... first there was a top 1, with just him sitting on top of everyone else, then when Nadal came there was a top 2, then Djokovic last year presented a clear top 3, now Murray makes it 4. We're a far cry from the days when Ljubicic could get the 3 ranking.

Congrats to Serena for making the final of the US Open.
I hope she wins her 9th slam title. I think she'll finish with 11 after this one.
Haven't been able to see much of the mens matches but good to know Fed is still in the running.
