I think both the bad reviews from critics AND the bad reviews from the advanced screenings for the movie will prevent it from opening high. In two months we are already saturated with 4 horror movies so something has to disappoint and I believe Cursed will be the victim. It currently stands at 5.6/10 at imdb which is a really bad sign. Elektra had 4.4/10 at imdb few days before it opened and we saw how bad it is. I also havent seen the trailer attached to any of the movies I saw in the theaters. Not to mention the release date for the movie was delayed for 6 months since september since they had to reshoot some of the scenes. I believe the movie will open under 18 million

Both THIRTEEN and GARDEN STATE had under 5.0 IMDB user rating before their US theatrical releases.

In fact, the R-rated version of CURSED gets many good reviews from test screenings and AFM premiere screenings.

If WHITE NOISE can enjoys $20 million opeing weekend, why CURSED can't?

Well Ill wait and see how the ratings pan out few days before the movie opens. As for the White Noise comparison, I get the vibe from Cursed is that its just another American Werewolf in Paris offering nothing too fresh. Maybe its just me and the horror movies that opened high relied heavily on jump scare tactics. We'll see how it pans out opening week with the saturation of horror movies. Enjoy the movie though

For me, White Noise looks like just another Dragonfly offering nothing too fresh.

I think that PG-13 version will be bad, but it will enjoys HUGE opening weekend.

The PG-13 rating makes me weep. I mean, seriously, from the makers of Scream and the director of Nightmare on the Elm Street, a movie that is supposed to "reinvent" the werewolf genre...and it's PG-13?!?!?!

That PG-13 is guaranted that a certain poster will love this movie while everyone else will despise this film. He will come back with bolded rebuttals and berate everyone else

Cursed will get around $24 million opening weekend. I can't see it's PTA being over $10,000.

As for the movie, I'll still see it, but damn...

Anyway, Miramax/Dimension would release unrated director's cut DVD to make more money......

Using Greg's sentence, "It seems a bit silly to me that people can't see the same thing theatrically that they can see at home. "

PS: Miramax/Dimension will release DARKNESS unrated DVD in April.

The Fango staff caught a screening this week of what was clearly the R version, and frankly, we’re curious about how coherently a few key scenes will play with their hard-gore content—including severed heads and bodies—watered down or deleted. (And calm down, Shannon Elizabeth fans; the "nudity" is just a glimpse of Jesse Eisenberg’s bare butt.)

Wes Craven should take his name off this trash. I had heard that the, what is now called the "R" cut, is gory as hell, which kinda made me interested in this film. Now, this thing will have to get some great WOM from fellow horror fans to get me to see this.

I actually love it that they do this cause it pleases me to see people get so pissed off at this for something as trivial as this... It actually has nothing to do with the quality in terms of the rating.. It's more of a Psychological factor in that you feel like a grownup when seeing an R Rated movie VS feeling pandered down to like a teen or kid if it's PG-13..

Exactly, just like how AVP wouldve still been mediocre even if it was rated R.

Anyways this movie looks like garbage, im more hyped for Amityville Horror then this tripe.

Opening - 14
Final - 45

THE RING was made for PG-13 psychological movie, but CURSED was made for a hard-R movie.

According to several people who has seen the R-rated version of CURSED, the edits of CURSED may ruin the continuity of the film. (like DARKNESS)

Here's two reviews I found

One is pretty negative http://www.aint-it-cool-news.com/display.cgi?id=19196

Other is fairly positive http://www.aintitcool.com/display.cgi?id=18754

For me, just judging my the trailer, it looks like a straight to video flick.

But you're right Mary, it seems both the negative and positive reviewer agree the R rating is what really works in this movie but it looks like those scenes wont be seen now.

Two more positive reviews

This movie also get many good responses from AFM premiere screenings.
Based on Variety's article on 2004 November , it seems like that many distributors love this movie. (At that time, this movie wasn't edited to get PG-13.)
Quote:
Riding a wave of insatiable international thirst for genre pics with brand name stars, Miramax Films has sealed a spate of overseas pacts at AFM on the upcoming Dimension Films titles "Cursed" and "Sin City."

After "Cursed" screened Friday night for buyers, the mini-major's sales arm went ahead to close rights with Svensk in Scandinavia, RCV in Benelux, Gaga in Japan, Golden Village in Singapore and West Video in Russia, among others. In the works are pacts that will bring the film to France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Australia.

"Cursed" reteams the duo behind Dimension's hit "Scram" franchise, helmer Wes Craven and scribe Kevin Williamson. Pic is a hip update of a classic werewolf tale set in Los Angeles, and stars an ensemble cast with everyone from Christina Ricci and Omar Epps to pop divas Mya and Mandy Moore and Joshua Jackson, Skeet Ulrich, Scott Baio, James Brolin, hannon Elizabeth and Portia Di Rossi.

Miramax sales guru Jere Hausfater and chief operations office Rick Sands said "Cursed" is selling because of its unique mix of horror and humor, plus a successful screening slot in Santa Monica.

I think that PG-13 version will be very bad, like DARKNESS.

For box office, I think that this movie will drop more than 60% at second weekend.

THE RING was made for PG-13 psychological movie, but CURSED was made for a hard-R movie.

Exactly! The Ring was psychological horror, Cursed on the other hand is a werewolf movie for god's sake, it just screams blood, guts, intestines! What would a movie in which a monster's ripping people appart be without gore?!

I'm hoping for CURSED to open over $20,000,000.

HIDE AND SEEK and BOOGEYMAN will be dying by then.
